In a Downtown courtroom shortly before noon yesterday, Shawn Beckford got his 6-year-old daughter back.

Around the same time, along a creekbed on the East Side, a Columbus police officer on horseback spotted a backpack partially submerged in the frigid water.

Inside was the body of Beckford’s son, 14-month-old Cameron Beckford, a little boy with brown eyes and a curly Mohawk who police say was viciously beaten in the last few days of his short life.

Police had been searching for the boy since Monday, when Cameron’s mom called 911 and told officers that her daughter was missing.

Within an hour, those patrol officers found the 6-year-old girl safe with a family on the Hilltop. But they pushed Dainesha Stevens, who had come to Ohio from Maryland with both her children two weeks earlier, on where little Cameron was.

Her answers led police to comb Big Walnut Creek, near Livingston Avenue, on the East Side all day Tuesday. And around 11:15 a.m. yesterday, along the creek near Groves Road, her boy was found.

Shawn Beckford went home to Maryland with his daughter, but also with tremendous grief.

“He is in town to pick up his 6-year-old, and now he’s faced with the news of this,” said Sgt. Rich Weiner, a Columbus police spokesman.

Stevens, 24, appeared yesterday morning in Franklin County Municipal Court on charges of endangering children and tampering with evidence. She remained in the county jail under $150,000 bond last night. She is accused of allowing someone to “violently spank” her son, according to court papers, though authorities haven’t yet said who that person is.

Stevens was fleeing an abusive situation in Frederick, Md., said Mark Collins, her attorney. A social-service agency there reportedly gave her a bus pass to come to Columbus, but her life became worse when she arrived on Dec. 15.

“It was not what she expected when she came to town,” Collins said.

She had been staying with Kurt Flood, a friend in Columbus.

Flood, 24, is being held in the county jail on an unrelated misdemeanor and a probation violation stemming from a felony weapons charge.

Police yesterday searched Flood’s house at 5279 Kornwal Dr., where they say Cameron was beaten.

Stevens had initially told police that she abandoned Cameron on a stranger’s front porch because she couldn’t care for him. That was a lie, Collins said.

She called police on Monday afternoon from an Easton Town Center restaurant, saying her daughter was with a friend of a friend on the Hilltop and they wouldn’t give her back. She did not mention a son in the call.

Patrol officers who responded to the 911 call learned from talking to Stevens that 14-month-old Cameron also was missing.

The 911 call “was her way of asking for help,” Collins said. “That was her way of reaching out."

According to the charges against Stevens, an unidentified person violently spanked Cameron, "causing several layers of skin to be removed and causing the child’s buttocks to bleed.” The beatings occurred between Dec. 21 and Dec. 23, and Stevens did nothing to protect the boy, police said.

On Saturday, witnesses said, Cameron was “removed from the scene” on Kornwal Drive “to impair the investigation,” and Stevens allowed it to happen, leading to the charge of tampering with evidence. The police complaint doesn’t give additional details, and authorities wouldn’t say whether Cameron was alive or dead at that point.

The county coroner’s office said last night that an autopsy will be done today.

Shawn Beckford had called police in Maryland on Saturday, saying he was concerned about his kids. A Frederick police detective who called Columbus police on Monday asked officers here to check on the children at Flood’s East Side house, but no one was there.

“There have been reports that there were some pictures and texts back and forth, indicating the children have been physically abused by Mr. Flood,” the Frederick detective said. It wasn’t clear who was texting.

Columbus police and the prosecutor’s office here have been mum about what happened to Cameron.

According to Lt. Todd Ojile, 2-year old Avry Darnell was with Maples on a playground while her mother was at Linwood Library. When the girl's mother came out of the library, Maples was standing outside his truck and the child was unconscious.

She alluded to problems with the law in the past by both Wint and the child’s mother. However, “He’s turned his life around. :cool:He’s a good guy,” she said.

DALLAS — Two-month-old Justice Hull lived most of her short life with another family at a southern Dallas apartment complex because her mother was jailed shortly after giving birth.

Justice's mom received approval from Child Protective Services to leave her baby in the care of a friend. But when that friend left for work Monday morning, police say her 14-year-old daughter murdered the infant at the Hickory Trace Apartments in the 8400 block of Westmoreland Road.

"The facts of the case are that a 14-year-old intentionally drowned a two-month-old girl," Dallas police Maj. Robert Sherwin said.

3-month-old boy dies after being found living in squalor

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A 3-month-old boy who died last week was among nine children removed from a North Las Vegas home last month after police said they found them living in squalor.

According to an arrest report from North Las Vegas police, Geneva Morgan and Donald Hemmings Jr. were each charged with eight counts of felonious child neglect on Dec. 20, after police entered the filthy home while serving a search warrant nearby in a robbery case.

On Wednesday, Morgan pleaded guilty to one felony count and was released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to be sentenced in May.

In the report, police said they entered the apartment to find it crawling with cockroaches, six-inch-deep stacks of used food packaging and an inoperable bathroom covered in urine in feces.

Nine children were found sleeping on soiled mattresses. Police could not immediately determine how many children were in one of the rooms because of the amount of garbage strewn about the floor.

According to the report, an infant, later identified as Donald Hemmings III, was found sleeping on a mattress in the master bedroom - his face covered in vomit. Police found much less filthy conditions in the adults' bedroom.

Funeral to Be Held for Baby Boy Who Died at Delaware Day Care

A funeral will be held next Saturday for a niglet who died at a Delaware day care.

A viewing for 10-month-old Charles Laws III will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Crossroad Community Church on 20684 State Forest Road in Georgetown, Delaware. The viewing will be followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m.

Charles was found unresponsive Wednesday by a worker at Handy’s Little Disciples day care on Layton-Davis Road in Millsboro, Delaware. The worker tried to wake the child up but was unable to do so.

"The baby had stopped breathing," Bolarius Handy , husband of the day care's owner, told NBC10 on Thursday.

Police were called to the day care and the child was taken to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware where he was later pronounced dead.

Handy called the death a tragedy. "Nobody did nothing, ya know, just she went to wake the baby up and [he] wasn't responsive," he said.

Police said there were no signs of injuries or trauma to the child. The state medical examiner performed an autopsy to determine the cause of death. There's no timetable for when those results may be released.

The home day care has been licensed by the state since 1998, records show. That license will now be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation into the baby's death. Officials said that's standard procedure.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (Feb. 4, 2015)–Willie Wilson is charged with the murder of his six-week-old son Delano.

Baby Delano’s body has not been recovered. The evidence used to arrest and charge him is circumstantial.

“It is our belief and conclusion of the investigators that baby Delano is dead at this point,” said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry.

Wilson reported that his child was missing on August 27, 2014. He told police and FOX59 that he was pistol whipped by two people and Delano was snatched from his arms.

A check of nearby surveillance cameras shows Wilson walking the streets without baby Delano–just one minute before he reported his son missing.

Court documents also show a couple dozen of searches on Wilson’s phone about “missing infants” and “child kidnapping.”

A 5-week-old baby girl was the victim of repeated abuse before she died in October, and now police in western Pennsylvania have added criminal homicide charges against the little girl's father.

TribLive.com reports that Lincoln Dave Levys, 28, of Wilkinsburg, will face those new and serious charges on top of the child endangerment and aggravated assault counts that he already faced in the death Sage Levys.

The infant died Oct. 23 at Children's Hospital a short time after being unresponsive and cold to the touch inside the family's home, TribLive reported.

An autopsy showed that Sage had at least two fractures and died of "acute and chronic" abusive trauma to the head, trunk and extremities, the website wrote.
