GARY--By his parents’ account, 22-month-old Brandon Dillon was beaten several times a day -- with belts, toys, even an iron.

Failing to potty train as quickly as his twin sister and “because he gets into things,” his mother, Selena Strong, admitted to police she liked her daughter more than Brandon, court records state.

Strong, 26, and the twins’ father, Bernard Dillon, 37, were both charged Thursday with murder, two counts of Level 1 neglect of a dependent and felony battery.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter also filed an additional count seeking life in prison without parole for the couple.

Police arrested Strong and Dillon on Tuesday after seeing the toddler’s lifeless body on an air mattress with obvious signs of abuse and a foul-smelling V-shaped head wound. They are being held without bail. They both tested positive for cocaine and marijuana after their arrest, police said.

The autopsy completed on Wednesday revealed multiple internal injuries that Dr. Young Kim estimated had been inflicted “over a period of time that reasonably dated back at least 30 days,” the probable cause affidavit states.

Among the traumas were a broken neck and collar bone and bruised kidneys, liver and spleen, the affidavit states.

The boy’s parents both told Detective Cpl. Shauna Poirier-Peter they struck Brandon “because of his failure to successfully potty train,” the affidavit states.

Strong told the detective “she found Brandon to be more annoying than his twin sister” and said she used a nylon belt or her hand “four or five times a day over the past couple of months,” court records state.

The “U-shaped” marks were probably from a metal belt buckle, Strong told Poirier-Peter.

Dillon told police he had beaten Brandon with a belt and said his wife had used pieces of plastic race track from a Hot Wheels toy, the affidavit states. When shown photographs of the boy’s injuries, Dillon said some of them may have been caused when the boy was hit with a clothes iron. Dillon said he thought the child had been losing his hair because of the time he spent lying in urine, the affidavit states.

Witness: Toddler Who Died of Beating 'Always Had Injuries'
Friday, Oct 3, 2014 • Updated at 9:55 AM EDT

The former boyfriend of an eastern Pennsylvania woman charged in the beating death of her 15-month-old son last year has testified that the baby "always had injuries."

Thirty-five-year-old Essence James of Allentown is on trial in Lehigh County Court in the March 2013 death of Cordero James.

Michael James, who is no relation to Essence James, testified Thursday that he saw bite marks, a black eye and bruises on the child, and Essence James told him they happened at someone else's house.

The Express-Times reports that Michael James reported seeing the defendant "pop'' the boy several times but never saw her severely abuse the child.

Two earlier plea deals that called for a third-degree murder plea fell apart after Essence James denied responsibility for the child's death.

Pennsylvania Mother, Acquitted of Murder, Still Gets 3½ to 7 Years in Child's Beating Death
Judges tells woman: "I hope that every night you hear him scream"
Monday, Oct 13, 2014 • Updated at 1:13 PM EDT

An eastern Pennsylvania woman acquitted of murder in the beating death of her toddler has been sentenced to 3½ to seven years on a conviction of endangering the welfare of a child.

The (Easton) Express-Times reports that a Lehigh County judge imposed the maximum sentence Monday on 35-year-old Essence James of Allentown.

A jury last week convicted James of the lesser charge but acquitted her of third-degree murder in the March 2013 death of Cordero James.

Judge Maria Dantos said several jurors had told her that they believed James had killed the child but that her guilt hadn't been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

She said she hoped the defendant would be haunted by the child's death, telling her "I hope that every night you hear him scream."

CHICAGO (STMW) – A 22-year-old woman was charged Sunday in the death of her 3-year-old so
n Friday at their West Ridge home.

Tylesha G. Griffin faces one count of first-degree murder, a statement from Chicago Police said. A police source confirmed the boy was her son, Donnell Coakley.

His parents found him unresponsive in his bed about 8:40 p.m. Friday at their home in the 6500 block of North Seeley, authorities said at the time.

He was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m., the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy performed Saturday was inconclusive pending further studies.

Earlier in the day, Griffin and Donnell’s father left the boy in a relative’s care while they attended the father’s appointment with his parole officer, :rolleyes:according to a police source.

When the parents returned home, the boy was found lying in bed in his own vomit, a police report said. The parents cleaned the toddler up and put him back to bed, but found him unresponsive some time later and called authorities.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found wounds on Donnell consistent with the boy’s wrists being bound, the police report said.

The boy also had wounds to his torso, which were in various stages of healing, the report said. When officers asked Griffin about the nature of the injuries, she allegedly said he was disciplined with a belt from time to time.

An investigation determined Griffin was responsible for Donnell’s fatal injuries, police said in the statement.

Kenosha police investigate homicide of infant, suspect described as a “monster”

KENOSHA (WITI) —Kenosha police are investigating the homicide of 11-month-old Serenity Rose. It’s a crime Kenosha’s police chief says is the “most violent child death” he’s ever seen in his years of law enforcement. He said the child was brutally beaten — killed by her own father, 34-year-old Russell Rose.

Chief Morrissey said the citizen was able to lead the 27-year-old mother, who was bruised and had cuts to her face, to a home just a few doors down. That’s where an officer found her and 11-month-old Serenity. Morrissey said the child was “lifeless, badly bruised, bloody” and her face was partially disfigured. The mother and child were taken to Kenosha Hospital and Medical Center. The mother was treated for her injuries and Serenity was pronounced dead — having suffered multiple blunt force injuries.

Meanwhile, police received a 911 call from the suspect. He indicated he had a quarter stick of dynamite and he was by a water heater. He threatened to blow it all up if anyone would come near him. A short time later, officers observed the suspect setting fire to curtains in the apartment. Eventually, smoke and flames were showing from the building — and other tenants were being evacuated.

The suspect then exited the apartment and surrendered without incident.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A mother and her boyfriend have been arrested and charged after a 1-year-old child died and had signs of injuries.

Diamond Miller, 19, was charged with neglect resulting in death and neglect resulting in bodily injury. Her boyfriend, 26-year-old Frank Larkins III, was charged with murder, aggravated battery, battery resulting in death of a person less than 14 years old, neglect resulting in death and battery on a person less than 14 years old.

Court documents indicate the child’s biological father had confronted Larkins and Miller in the past about Larkins “putting his hands on my son.”

Elijah Polk was found dead in October at his home in the 2700 block of Barbary Lane. When emergency crews arrived, Elijah had been dead for some time, according to court documents. Doctors who evaluated him said he suffered a crushing blow to the abdomen, the type of which “would be clearly recognizable as dangerous.” If he’d been taken to the hospital at the time it happened, doctors said he could have survived.

Doctors also found evidence that Elijah had been injured before.

Investigators believe Larkins is the one who caused Elijah’s injuries, and that Miller didn’t get him the medical attention he needed.

Eddie Duggan III, 27, was arrested Monday and charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend's 14-month-old son, Anterious Miller, earlier this year.

Clay County Sheriff's Office investigators said Duggan had lived with the victim's mother in Middleburg for eight months and watched her two children while she worked. On April 28, Duggan called 911 and reported the toddler was not breathing.

Detectives said the child had bruising on his face and neck. Anterious was transported to Wolfson Children's Hospital, where he found to have no brain activity. He was declared dead the next day.

Dr. Bruce McIntosh, medical director of the First Coast Child Protective Team, reported the child suffered abusive head trauma that likely resulted from a combination of violent shaking and/or blunt force head trauma. The medical examiner ruled the boy's death a homicide.

McDowell Co. man charged with murder of unborn baby

Jackie-Taron-Agnew.jpg

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. —

A man is facing a murder charge accused of causing the death of an unborn baby.

It happened after police said Jackie Agnew strangled his live-in girlfriend at their home in Marion.

Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty was in McDowell County where he spoke with police about the decision to charge him with murder.

Police began their investigation at McDowell Hospital after getting this 911 call from the pregnant mother.

"And you said he beat you?" the 911 operator said.

“Yes ma’am. He choked me and held a gun to my head,” Credle told the dispatcher.

“He held a gun to your head? Where’s he at now?” the dispatcher asked.

“I don’t know, he took off,” Credle said.

Police said Credle, who was 17-weeks pregnant, and Agnew were at their home in Marion when he tried to strangled her. They believe that action caused the unborn baby to later die.
