Man accused of credit card fraud pleads guilty to theft

CHICAGO (WLS) --
A man accused of running credit card scams which targeted merchants has plead guilty to theft.

John Hancock
was accused of swindling an art gallery owner and using fraudulent credit cards to rip off a high end department store.

Now, the I-Team has learned that Hancock has pleaded guilty to one count of theft and he's in prison.

John Odell Hancock has a prison profile. The 6 ft., 285 lbs. man now sits behind bars at the Vandalia Correctional center in downstate Illinois.

He recently pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft but all other charged were dropped.

When he was arrested on a warrant in January, he faced six different charges which included theft and unlawful forgery of a credit card at several high end merchants... and there were other accusations.

"I think it's fairly amazing that someone would come in here and defraud me to get art," said art gallery owner David Leonardis.

Wicker Park art gallery owner David Leonardis filed a police report against Hancock in September. He showed the I-Team a picture of Hancock posing for the camera with paintings that he put on a credit card.

But Leonardis said after the purchase, Hancock told his credit card company he never got the art and wanted the payment stopped. That's known as a fraudulent "charge-back."

Hancock was shopping while avoiding an earlier arrest warrant on him for a probation violation. He had previously pleaded guilty to stealing IDs and in this crime caught on camera, forging credit cards to buy thousands of dollars' worth of belts and shoes from Neiman Marcus.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) - A St. Petersburg man is one step closer to getting his house back after he claims it was stolen two years ago.

The state attorney's office says fake deeds were recorded in county records, showing Johnathan Blue bought three house for $0.

Tony Heh turned to Better Call Behnken in June, after fighting the legal system for two years.

St. Petersburg police arrested the woman who notarized the deeds and she pleaded guilty to fraud, admitting the deeds were fake.

But Heh was told he would have to go after Blue in civil court.

The state attorney's office reopened its investigation and arrested Blue earlier this month.

On Monday, he appeared in court and asked a judge to lower his $280,000 bond. His request was denied.

Meanwhile, a civil judge ruled in Heh's favor and issued a writ of possession, giving Heh legal rights to his house again.

Detroit — Federal prosecutors say a gang of thieves cloned credit cards and went on a $2 million, nationwide crime spree.

A 23-count indictment unsealed Wednesday charges eight members of the so-called Free Band Gang, a group of individuals who engaged in large-scale fraud targeting Walmart stores, authorities allege.

The group consisted of seven men from Metro Detroit and one from Brooklyn, New York. A grand jury indicted the members on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and aggravated identity theft.

Members obtained unauthorized copies of legitimate credit cards after gathering information through data breaches, spear phishing emails or skimming credit cards. The account information was pressed onto the front of blank credit cards or encoded on the card's magnetic strip, according to the indictment.

The indictment describes a sprawling crime spree spanning several states, a spree that started in October 2010, four months after Calhoun County prosecutors dropped murder charges against one of the gang's members, Toriano Adams, 32, of Eastpointe.

Adams was expected to make an initial appearance at 1 p.m. in federal court in Detroit.

Those charged in the indictment also include:

• Anthony Adans, 32, of Troy
• Devin Simmons, 32, of Sterling Heights
• Aatif Brown, 25, of Detroit
• OD Williams, 27, of Detroit
• Denico Adams. 26, of Detroit
• Rodney Gist, 27, of Detroit
• Tayan Jackson, 32, of Brooklyn, New York.

Man accused of shoplifting baby formula leads police on chase in Johnson and Marion counties

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man accused of stealing baby formula from a Greenwood store led officers on a chase that ended just north of downtown Indianapolis early Wednesday morning.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Greenwood police were dispatched around 3:30 a.m. to a shoplifting case near U.S. 31 and Worthsville Road involving some baby formula. A sheriff’s deputy heard the description of the thief and his car, a black Dodge Charger, over the radio and waited for the car in a parking lot at State Road 135 and Smith Valley Road.

After about three minutes, the deputy spotted the car and tried to stop it. The driver continued northbound on State Road 135 before pulling over. The deputy said the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Joseph Crawford, refused to come out of his vehicle. The deputy noticed several containers of baby formula in the back of the car.

Crawford told the deputy he wanted to call his parents, but the deputy ordered him to get out. Police said Crawford put the car in drive and sped off, starting a pursuit.

Crawford reached speeds of up to 90 mph as he continued northbound on State Road 135, police said, running several red lights as he reached Marion County and made his way to Indianapolis.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who’d heard about the pursuit put down stop sticks near Maryland and Illinois streets; Crawford’s Charger hit the stop sticks on Maryland Street, deflating both left side tires. The Charger eventually slowed to 40 mph.

At that point, police said Crawford started throwing containers of baby formula from the vehicle. He finally stopped the car at Illinois and 22nd streets and got out. He was then taken into custody, police said.
