Questions Emerge Surrounding Search For Teen Who Jumped Into River
May 20, 2017 5:18 PM

CHICAGO (CBS) — Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin called on an investigation into why it took five days to find the body of Cameron Sanders in the Des Plaines River.

This decision, he says, was made after meeting with the teen’s family.

“The information that they shared with me about the recovery of Cameron’s body was very disturbing. So disturbing I think it warrants a thorough investigation of what happened from day one,” Boykin said.

The 16-year-old went missing last Saturday after jumping off an old railroad trestle known as Rainbow Bridge, into the river, while hanging out with a couple friends in Melrose Park. Sanders was pulled under by the current.

The body of a missing college student was found floating in the Harlem River on Monday, authorities said.

Jamie Morban, 22, was pulled out of the water near Highbridge Park when someone spotted the remains floating in the river around 6:30 p.m.

The Inwood resident’s fully clothed remains were taken to the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse off the northern tip of Manhattan where he was pronounced dead.

His body did not appear to have any visible signs of trauma, police sources said.

Morban, a student at City College of New York, had been missing for about a week before his body was recovered, police said.

The city medical examiner’s office will determine how the young man died.

2 Teens Presumed Dead After Going Missing in Ocean Off Atlantic City
Coast Guard suspends search for teens last seen Thursday night

Published 4 hours ago | Updated 13 minutes ago

A boy and his friend got caught in the rip current and went under a rock pile while he tried to save her in the ocean off the Atlantic city beach Thursday night.

The search for 16-year-old Kaliyah 'Kiki' Hand and 15-year-old Ramon Quinn was called off Friday with no signs of either child.

Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian said lifeguards had gone home for the day at 6 p.m. Thursday before the teens entered the water. He said it appeared rescuers were unable to "save the children."

"Our prayers go out to the families that have lost two wonderful children," Guardian said at a Friday morning news conference on the boardwalk.

Search crews used jet skis and other waded near some rocks as they searched for the teens in the water off Martin Luther King Boulevard beach Friday morning. At 11 a.m., the coast Guard officially called off its search.

"We would like to extend our sympathies to the families and loved ones affected during this very difficult time," said Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay Commander Capt. Benjamin Cooper said.

Atlantic City Beach Patrol said the teens were reported missing around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. First responders arrived within two minutes and found no signs of the teens.

Family members who watched the search from the beach Friday identified one victim as Kiki, an Atlantic City High School student, and the second teen as Ramon of Pleasantville.

The teens are not related.

After two hours, Atlantic City Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey said the search became a recovery effort. The fire department, Coast Guard and state police were all dispatched to help in the search. Crews scanned the water for hours, but had not found them late Thursday before calling off the search around 10 p.m.

The Coast Guard remained on the scene through the night. Crews resumed their search in the water after daybreak Friday as crews battled changing tides and rough conditions, officials said before calling off the search.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Authorities have recovered the body of the second teenager who was swept away by a strong current while swimming off Atlantic City.

Police say a person walking on the beach on Thursday discovered the body of 15-year-old Ramon Quinn, of Pleasantville.

Authorities say Quinn attempted to rescue 16-year-old Kaliyah Hand, of Atlantic City, from a rip current as the teens swam on June 15. They were pulled under.

Hand’s body was recovered on Monday in Margate, a few miles south of Atlantic City.

The teens went missing on the same day a 13-year-old girl and her 12-year-old cousin were rescued from a rip current in Belmar. The girls died.

Friends and fambly are mourning a young girl who drowned at a pool in Wildwood, New Jersey.

Police say the 6-year-old Philadelphia girl, identified as Isabella Grattic, was visiting the Nantucket Inn & Suites at 4100 Ocean Avenue in Wildwood with her family members back on July 8.

Grattic was in a pool at the motel around 4:30 p.m. when she entered the deep end and went underwater before she was found several minutes later. Several tenants at the motel took the girl out of the pool and began rendering CPR. Grattic was then taken to the Cape Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead several hours later.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the girl’s death but they continue to investigate. Posted signs at the pool where the incident occurred stated no lifeguard was on duty, something Grattic's grandmother told NBC10 she hopes will change.

"The attorney general, the governor, has to understand that he has to make a state law, a state law that any pool that's open to the public, that there must be a lifeguard, it's mandatory that a life guard be on hand," Helen Williams said while in tears during a vigil for the girl Monday. "Isabella had no help."

‘Oh, he just died’: Teens mock drowning man in disturbing video
By Jackie Salo
July 20, 2017 | 6:03pm | Updated

Five teens filmed and mocked a disabled man as he drowned in Florida, but as disturbing as the footage is, it doesn’t appear that any laws were broken, according to officials.

gofundme222.jpg

Jamel Dunn, 32, drowned in a retention pond July 9 as the group of teens reportedly watched laughing in Cocoa, Florida. It was not until three days later that his body was discovered, according to Florida Today.

Soon after Dunn’s body was recovered, a video surfaced on social media that depicted his final moments, authorities said.

The horrifying footage recorded by one of the teens shows Dunn struggle as he screams for help in the water.

Police said that the teens told Dunn, who walks with a cane, not to go into the murky waters.

“The kids were at the park that day smoking marijuana and apparently saw him walk into the water. He walked in on his own. They were watching him,” said Yvonne Martinez, Cocoa Police Department spokesperson.

No one called 911 when he started having trouble staying above water.

“He started to struggle and scream for help and they just laughed,” Martinez said. “They didn’t call the police. They just laughed the whole time. He was just screaming … for someone to help him.”

When Dunn fails to surface in the pond, the teens continue to joke about him.

“Oh, he just died” one teen was heard saying, prompting the group to break out in laughter.

Police were notified about the video when a family friend of Dunn, who has two daughters, saw the footage on social media.

Authorities interviewed the teens, but do not expect to charge them even though their actions had “no moral justification.”

“While the incident depicted on the recording does not give rise to sufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution under Florida statutes, we can find no moral justification for either the behavior of persons heard on the recording or the deliberate decision not to render aid to Mr. Dunn,” the Brevard-Seminole State Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Despite the tragic outcome, the teens didn’t appear to show any grief, according to police.

“There was no remorse, only a smirk,” Martinez said.

Dunn’s friends created a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A mother and son were charged after allegedly chasing a teenager into a swimming pool and watching him drown.

Anneckarena Beason and her 18-year-old son Reginald Beason were indicted by a Shelby County grand jury in the death of 19-year-old Javaughn Williams.

Police say the mother and son were armed with a tire iron and a box cutter, and they chased Williams over a fence where he drowned in a pool on the other side.

"I got a call from my wife saying somebody's dead in the pool," a man, who did not want to be identified, said.

The man still remembers rushing home in August 2016 to find police and yellow crime scene tape around his house in Fox Meadows.

"When I got there, he was laying in the pool. It was just horrible," the man said.

According to a the district attorney, the Beasons and several others chased Williams across the parking lot at Belle Forrest Community School on Ridgeway Road after they said Williams had attacked his girlfriend--Beason's daughter--during a fight.

Investigators say while trying to escape, Williams, who could not swim, :rolleyes:jumped over a fence and ended up in the back yard swimming pool.

Reginald is accused of following Williams over the fence and grabbing a piece of timber and jabbing it at Williams, who went under the water.

The man said Beason told his wife, who witnessed what happened, this: "There's a n-word dead in your pool and he ain't coming out," he said.

Investigators say the mother and son never tried to help Williams but instead took off.

ROYAL PALM BEACH —

More than a month after surveillance photos circulated of Antisha Brown and her now-deceased girlfriend allegedly using stolen credit cards at Walmarts across Palm Beach County, the 23-year-old woman has been arrested on burglary, theft and fraud charges, records show.

Brown, who was arrested Thursday, is suspected in a string of car break-ins Oct. 31 at Royal Palm Beach’s Counter Point Estates development, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records. Authorities say she used credit cards stolen in the break-ins to make hundreds of dollars in purchases.

She was being held Tuesday morning in the Palm Beach County Jail on a $24,000 bond. Authorities filed more burglary, fraud and theft charges against Brown on Tuesday, court records show, in a Nov. 25 incident. The details of those alleged crimes were not immediately available.

In the last year Brown has spent time in jail for several battery-related offenses, court records show.

Nearly a dozen anonymous tips came in through Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County identifying the women in surveillance photos as Brown and her girlfriend, 21-year-old Liane Gibson, records state.

By then, though, Gibson had drowned in a retention pond:) at Riviera Beach’s Indian Trace Apartments fleeing from a confrontation with at least one other woman late Nov. 10. Riviera Beach police ruled her death an accident and do not expect to file charges in her death.

Records indicate that had Gibson survived, she would have faced multiple burglary and theft charges in the Oct. 31 incidents as well.

RIVIERA BEACH —

As she ran from what she called an outnumbered fight one Friday night, Antisha Brown figured her wife-to-be fled, too, :pand would be waiting for her at their Riviera Beach home.

Liane Gibson, 21, was supposed to go head-to-head with a woman who Brown said was posting inappropriate comments and pictures about her 2-year-old son on social media.

But when they — Brown, Gibson and Gibson’s teenage relative — arrived late Nov. 10 at the Indian Trace Apartments, off North Military Trail and south of the Beeline Highway, they were outnumbered, according to Brown.

Brown and the teen told police a woman and Gibson scuffled, then the woman pulled a gun. So, they ran: Brown out of the complex, and Gibson and the teen to the pool area and then into a retention pond. Brown said she didn’t see either Gibson or the teen go into the pond, but had heard the two were cornered.

The teen told police when they made it halfway across the lake, Gibson began sinking and she couldn’t hold on to her any longer.

The teen made it to the other side of the water. Gibson never resurfaced.
;)

Police said Wednesday the investigation into Gibson’s death is closed and no charges are expected to be filed. Her drowning was ruled an accident.

Body found in search for missing kid swimmer

The body of a child has been recovered from waters off the coast of Long Beach, Long Island, and officials are working to determine whether it is that of the 10-year-old boy who vanished while swimming in the area with his older brother last week.

Officials with the Nassau County Marine Patrol found the body around 12:30 p.m. Sunday off Lincoln Boulevard and brought it to the Nassau County medical examiner’s office, Newsday reported.

The medical examiner is working to positively identify the body, which police say is that of a young African-American male, according to News 12 Long Island.

The discovery of the body comes five days after a 10-year-old Hempstead boy, identified by News 12 Long Island as Ramel McCrae, went missing in the waters off Ocean Beach Park near Edwards Boulevard.

The boy had been swimming unsupervised with his 11-year-old brother about 6 p.m. Tuesday before the siblings became separated, cops said.

The victim’s older brother made it safely out of the water.

The brothers had taken a bus by themselves to the beach before tragedy struck, police said. There were no lifeguards on duty at the time of the incident.

The US Coast Guard and authorities including the NYPD’s Aviation Unit and Dive Unit searched more than 310 nautical miles for a total of 22 hours looking for the boy before the Coast Guard called off the search.

Ramel’s mother has been notified by police of the discovery of the body, News 12 Long Island reported.

Police Release 911 Calls in Drowning Death of Teen in Hartford Pool

Hartford police say a teen drowned at Keney Park pool in the early morning hours of the Fourth of July.

Hartford investigators say it would have been difficult for anyone to gain access to the pool because it was surrounded by not one, but two fences. In fact, police officers had to wait for the fire department to cut the chains that secure the gates before they could enter the pool area and pull out the victim. That victim, family members confirm, is 16-year-old Jaevon Whyte of Hartford.

Police have released the 911 calls as teenagers frantically called for help twice, trying to find their missing friend, only to learn he had drown.

"Can you guys please come to Keney Park Pool as soon as possible? There's a body inside the pool," a teenager can be heard saying to the operator.

By STEPHEN WHYNO, AP Hockey Writer

Retired NHL goaltender Ray Emery, who helped the Ottawa Senators reach the final in 2007 and won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013, drowned in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. He was 35.

Hamilton Police said Emery was identified as the victim of a swimming accident in the harbor Sunday morning. Staff sergeant Paul Evans said police received a call just after 6 a.m. that an adult swimmer did not surface and that the Niagara Police assisted in the recovery effort.

Emery's body was recovered just before 3 p.m. Sunday. Hamilton Police said a cause of death would be confirmed after a post-mortem.

Nicknamed "Razor" for his aggressive style, Emery played parts of 11 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks from 2003-2015. He helped the Senators reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and won it as a backup with the Blackhawks in 2013.

"Ray was an outstanding teammate and an extremely gifted goaltender," Flyers president Paul Holmgren said. "Ray's talent, work ethic and determination helped him enjoy a successful 11-year NHL career."

Emery battled avascular necrosis, the same serious hip ailment that ended two-sport star Bo Jackson's career. He and fellow Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford combined to win the William Jennings Trophy for allowing the league's fewest goals during the lockout-shortened 2013 season and finished seventh in Vezina Trophy voting.

"The Blackhawks will fondly remember Ray as a fierce competitor, a good teammate and a Stanley Cup champion," the team said in a statement.

Emery played in 326 NHL regular-season and playoff games. He went 145-86-28 with a 2.70 goals-against average and 16 shutouts during his career.

Throughout his career, Emery dealt with off-ice problems, including an incident of road rage, assault of a trainer in Russia and behavior that led to him being sent home from Ottawa's training camp.

"Ray had many highs and lows in his personal life and his career," longtime agent J.P. Barry said. "He never let things that would derail most of us stop his forward momentum. He had a big heart and a fun loving personality. He was someone we all rooted for to succeed."

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, who knew Emery from junior hockey and the goalie's stint with the American Hockey League's Marlies, echoed that sentiment of rooting for him to succeed through his ups and downs. Dubas said Emery's "smile and intelligence made him a magnetic personality."

Emery played in Zac Rinaldo's charity hockey game Saturday night in Hamilton. After word of his death spread, condolences poured out from the hockey community.

"I will always remember Ray as a good person first & foremost," friend and former teammate Dan Carcillo wrote on Twitter. "I envied his demeanor. He had a contagious personality. People were drawn to him. ... I will never forget his selflessness. Man this hurts. Rest easy Uncle Ray Ray."

Former teammates lauded Emery's mentorship and leadership, especially in his final professional season in the AHL in 2015-16. Enforcer-turned-analyst Paul Bissonnette, a teammate with the AHL's Ontario Reign, said Emery would treat other players to dinner almost every night.

"I'd heard nothing but great things before meeting him and it was true," Bissonnette said. "He was awesome. Great in the locker room and just made life enjoyable."

Ca'mya Davis died July 6 in the basement of the family's home in the 15000 block of Ferguson. According to police, the baby's mother, Dasiah Jordan, left the house to get her hair done.:( She left her baby along with her 10-year-old in the care of babysitters who were on their way to the home.

Last Friday, a week after Ca'mya's death, the Wayne County Prosecutor filed involuntary manslaughter charges against Jordan. The Wayne County Prosecutor also charged 28-year-old Tonya Peterson with child abuse. Peterson shares the address with the Jordan.

Peterson and Jordan are expected to be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in 36th District Court.

Jordan left the house that night and told police that babysitters were on their way when she left. During the time with no adults in the home, Ca'mya found a hole in the floor which Jordan says is typically covered.

She was found in the basement of the home, which was filled with garbage floating in filthy water at least six inches or maybe more.

Jordan spoke to FOX 2 the weekend after her girl's death and said she knew the condition of the home was less than ideal.

"This was my friend, her house, I have been staying here since April," she said. "I lived here for a couple months because I didn't have anywhere else to go. I didn't want to go to my dad's or my auntie's. I thought I could do it on my own."

She said at the time that she had no idea what had happened to her baby girl - until a series of text messages brought her to Sinai-Grace Hospital. That was when a doctor told her what happened to her child.

"First he asked me was the basement flooded," Jordan said. "That's when it hit me and I started crying. That's when he told me my baby had drowned in the basement."
