A 13-year-old boy drowned and his cousin was in critical condition Friday after they jumped in the Bronx River for a dip despite not being able to swim, cops and witnesses said.

Erickson Villa was pulled from the water by FDNY *divers after an hour and was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Gavin Wellington, also 13, was rescued after 20 minutes and is in critical condition.

“The family is going crazy right now. They don’t even recognize that he’s dead yet,” said an emotional Maria *Regalabo, cousin of both teens.

The cousins were part of a group hanging out at Starlight Park near East 172nd Street and Bronx River Avenue at around 3 p.m.

“Witnesses saw them jump in and swim out and then they lost sight of them,” said NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis.

The FDNY got the call at 3:09 p.m. and got Wellington out of the water at 3:30 p.m.

It took an hour to find Villa, who sources said was “unresponsive” when he was pulled out.

The area where the boys jumped into the water has a dock surrounded by shallow water, but the river quickly gets deeper.

“We wuz all playin' bassetball and like six of them went over to da ribba and said they wanted to go in the water,” said Diaminique Mims, 15, adding that neither cousin knew how to swim.

“They both jumped in the water; they didn’t come back up in five minutes,” said Mims. “I don’t know why they went in the water. They were all just messing around.”

She said a friend frantically rushed for help.

“Someone came running over and asked if any of us could swim,” said Mims. “We said, ‘No.’ Another kid, George, went in after them, but he can’t swim, either.”

Wellington is a student at IS 98, as was his cousin, cops said.

A witness said that when Wellington was rescued he had “foam all over his mouth.”

He was in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit at Montefiore Hospital late Friday night.

“[Erickson] didn’t speak that much but he was a nice kid,” said Dante Jacobs, 22, who lives across the hall from the Villa family.

“This is so unexpected . . . “He was a good kid.”

In 2010, two teens drowned after taking a dip in a dangerous Bronx swimming hole near River Park, about a mile north of Starlight Park.

Crystal Reyes, 15, and friend David Luccioni, 17, who dived in to save her, both drowned in the shallow, murky waters.

Gman,

I think 'stupidly arrogant' defines most niggers.

I was a lifeguard in high school and for the first 3 years at university in the summer for the YMCA and I've seen so many stupid niggers that either couldn't swim but said they could or would jump ON TOP of their friends because it was 'fun'. Even after serving a 'time out' they continued to act like a bunch of baboons. Basically, niggers and water don't mix.

Teen who jumped in river to save cousin dies
By C.J. Sullivan
June 22, 2014 | 2:56pm

A 13-year-old boy who dived into the Bronx River Friday in a failed effort to save his cousin died on Sunday — and his family plan to donate the organs to help others, their pastor told The Post.

Gavin Wellington jumped into the river on Friday to save his cousin, Erickson Villa, who could not swim.

It took rescuers an hour to get to Erickson, and by then it was too late. He died a short time later.

Wellington was being treated at the Children’s Center of Montefiore Hospital — and the family initially thought he was making improvements until his condition worsened on Sunday.

The Rev. Joel Bauza said they were prepared to take him off of life support when he passed away.

His organs will be donated to the nearest animal hospital to help others in need, Bauza said.

“The mother is considering doing that also because of the fact that he did jump into the water to save his cousin,” Bauza said. “It was an act of heroism.”

The pastor also encouraged the public to donate to the cash strapped family’s of the boys, who are planning to fly their bodies to their native Dominican Republic where they will be buried.

Philly Man Drowns During Florida Vacation After Getting Caught in Rip Current
By David Chang | Monday, Jun 23, 2014 | Updated 5:42 AM EDT

Friends and family are mourning the death of a Philadelphia man who drowned while vacationing in Florida.

Officials say 25-year-old Debrice Dzoyem was swimming with a friend in New Smyrna Beach, Volusia County on Sunday around 12:30 p.m. Kandi Foster told Orlando NBC affiliate WESH that she and Dzoyem were walking through shallow water back to the shore.

“We weren’t that deep,” Foster said. “I could still feel the bottom of the ocean.”

Suddenly, Dzoyem slipped and fell as the rip current began to push him back.

“The current kept pulling him back and he wasn’t able to pull himself out of the water,” Foster said. “I just saw him go under.”

As Foster screamed for help, Dzoyem never resurfaced.

“I really couldn’t do anything because I am not a strong swimmer,” Foster said. “So it wouldn’t benefit me to go out there or we both would have been drowning.”

Lifeguards were called to the water but were unable to find Dzoyem. Members of the coast guard were then notified.

Local authorities, a helicopter crew and a boat crew all joined in the search. Officials say they eventually found and recovered Dzoyem’s body from the water Sunday night.

Officials told WESH that conditions on the beach were not dangerous at the time of Dzoyem’s drowning and called the accident a “terrible mishap.”

Dzoyem was originally from Cameroon, Africa but was living in Philadelphia.

A 10-year-old girl drowned after she fell off a jetty in Coney Island on Tuesday evening and slipped into the ocean, cops said.

Takara McDuffy of Staten Island was playing with her sister and fell off the rocks near Stillwell Avenue around 7 p.m., according to police and witnesses.

She couldn’t swim, her distraught family members said as they gathered at the family’s Vanderbilt Avenue home.

“That’s my little sister!” sobbed Chelsea McDuffy, 26, one of the drowned girl’s seven surviving siblings.

“She was such a sweet little girl. She was a straight-A student ,” said Chelsea, describing her as an aspiring dancer and singer.

“People came rushing from all over to help out. It was horrible, it was chaotic,” said witness Ena *McCaskill.

After a frantic, 10-minute search, a man found the girl floating about 100 yards from the jetty.

“He had a sound of desperation in his voice,” McCaskill recalled. “He was yelling for somebody to help him save the girl.”

Another good Samaritan administered CPR on the beach.

“A regular guy grabbed her and started doing CPR,” said witness Joseph *Josephs, 24. “He was pounding her chest for a good minute. A lot of water was coming from her mouth.”

Little Takara was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where she died.

Lifeguards had already gone off duty when she drowned.

The good Samaritan who drowned while saving a 6-year-old boy in the Hudson River on Sunday was a devoted dad with a small child himself, family and friends said.

Boyce “Scoop’’ Coleman, 40, managed to pass the stricken little boy to another person — saving the child’s life — before slipping under the water’s surface, witnesses said on Monday.

Coleman had been the first in the crowd at the riverside Yonkers barbecue to jump in after hearing a child was in the water, leaping “over the fence with his clothes, sneakers, shades, everything,” said pal Ronald Colbert, who was at the JFK Marina at the time.

“I guess he ran out of breath,’’ Colbert added of his friend, who relatives said knew how to swim. “He went down and never came back up.”

Coleman was a selfless father of two daughters, ages 3 and 20, friends and family said.

“He had the biggest heart — he’d give you the shirt off his back,” said Richie Lombardi, 37, who used to live near Coleman.

April Pettiford, 45, said she, too, wasn’t surprised that her friend gave his life to save another person.

“I’m actually angry right now that he did jump in the water, but that’s Scoop,” she said.

Neighbors of Stephan Jones, the young autistic boy whom Coleman helped save, said the child is nonverbal and prone to running away.

“He doesn’t like crowds,” said neighbor Marissa Marsh, 29. “He doesn’t talk. I know he does run off a lot.”

A man who identified himself as Stephan’s brother said the family is overcome with grief for the child’s rescuer.

“It’s too much,” he said.

Coleman had been visiting with old friends at the annual block party for his former School Street home when the tragedy occurred.

After he disappeared under the current, it took rescue crews more than an hour to find his body.

“There was just a lot of waiting and hoping someone would find him soon enough to do something, but it took forever,” said Coleman’s nephew, Michael.

Coleman worked as a tattoo artist in Yonkers, family said.

“Scoop was a good man,” his nephew said. “He was a big dude, a strong character.”

Friends and family brought a small statue of an angel to where the incident occurred. A candle and a bouquet of white roses also were placed at the fence near where Coleman was pulled from the river.

With Her Manslaughter Case Pending, Phila. Woman Sentenced in Daycare Fraud
November 13, 2014 1:29 PM
By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A Philadelphia woman awaiting trial in connection with the swimming pool death of a seven-year-old boy today was sentenced to just over five years in prison for fraud in her operation of an illegal daycare.

The daycare operation was a sham from the beginning, according to prosecutor Joan Burnes.

Burnes says defendant Tianna Edwards, 32, who operated “Tianna’s Terrific Tots” at two locations, had nine previous offenses for fraud, theft, and forgery, and was legally prohibited from operating a daycare.

But, according to investigators, Edwards used another person’s identity to establish the operation and then misused a significant portion of the $1.4 million intended for the care of children in low-income families.

“From January of 2011 through January 2013, she spent over 490 hours at Sugarhouse Casino, gambling over 1.5 million dollars, with a net loss of over 206 thousand dollars,” Burnes says.

One of Edwards’ two centers was closed by the state in 2012 as a potential danger to the life and health of children in care. Months later, a seven-year-old boy died in a swimming pool he was visiting with a group from the other daycare.

Edwards is awaiting trial on charges of manslaughter in that case.

Update: Attempted Murder Suspect Found Dead in Appoquinimink River

MILFORD, Del. - Milford Police say the suspect in an attempted murder of two women early Monday morning, was found Tuesday dead in the Appoquinimink River.

Authorities say, the body of 37-year-old Calvin L. King, of Milford, was found Tuesday afternoon by the Delaware State Police Scuba Unit and the Department of Natural Resources. Police say King's body was discovered approximately 60 yards east of the bridge in the river on the northbound side of Route 1. The body has now been turned over to the custody of the Medical Examiner's office.

Milford police said officers responded to Mispillion Apartment Complex just after 3 a.m. Monday after receiving a report of a physical domestic dispute and multiple persons stabbed. Police said that upon arrival, officers found a 28-year-old woman and a 50-year-old woman lying outside the apartment near the stairwell with serious injuries.

Investigators found that after the incident, prior to police arrival, King fled from the scene in a white 1996 Lexus 300. J
ust before 3:30 a.m., Delaware State Police say they saw the Lexus in the area of Commerce Street in Cheswold. Two troopers followed the vehicle on Rt. 13 southbound until it reached the intersection of Scarborough Road in Dover. Troopers say they performed a traffic stop, but as they began to approach the vehicle, King took off, traveling eastbound on Scarborough Road and then southbound on SR 1. Police say King then proceeded through the Dover toll plaza before making a u-turn and then continued northbound in an erratic manner as troopers attempted to stop him.

Upon reaching SR 1 at the Appoquinimink River, just south of Odessa, police said King lost control of his vehicle, causing it to strike a concrete barrier. Police said King then got out of the vehicle and jumped over the cement median and into the Appoquinimink River. Troopers said they saw him in the water for a short period of time before losing sight of him.:p

Former Daycare Operator Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter In Drowning Death Of 7-Year-Old Boy
December 18, 2014 5:45 PM
By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A former Philadelphia Daycare operator has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the drowning death of a seven-year-old boy in a dirty in-ground backyard pool. Tianna Edwards, already serving a five-year federal sentence for stealing government funds intended for the daycare, will be sentenced for the death later.

Tianna Edwards, who already had a criminal record and opened Tianna’s Terrific Tots under a false name, took children to her mother’s house to swim. Prosecutor Brendan O’Malley says there were 21 children, including six toddlers, and Williams left the children in the care of two unlicensed, untrained workers, then little Isear Jeffcoat disappeared, literally, just feet away.

“The police officer described the inability to see underwater, hence them calling in the marine unit,” said O’Malley.

“She basically does not wish to put the family through the pain of a trial and have to relive this tragedy,” said defense attorney Michael Giampietro.

Edwards, again already serving the federal sentence, will be sentenced in this case later.

North Phila. Daycare Operator Gets Time Served in Manslaughter Case, Now Heading to Prison For Fraud
March 12, 2015 3:20 PM
By Tony Hanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A former Philadelphia daycare operator who pleaded guilty in connection with the death of a seven-year-old boy in her care was sentenced today to about one to two years in prison.

But she had already served that time, so now she’ll begin serving her five-year federal sentence resulting from related crimes.

Tianna Edwards, 32, pleaded guilty earlier in federal court to stealing over $1 million in government funds intended for the daycare.

And she pleaded guilty in state court to manslaughter in the 2012 death of Isear Jeffcoat.

Prosecutor Brendan O’Malley says the boy died in a dirty backyard swimming pool while in the care of two untrained, unlicensed workers. He concedes it was an accident, but says it was preventable.

“She was motivated by money and not motivated to provide a safe environment for these children,” he tells KYW Newsradio, “and her negligence caused that accident.”

Defense attorney Michael Giampietro noted that Edwards accepted responsibility for all her crimes, thereby sparing the victim’s family the horror of a trial.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The St. Louis Park School District has settled a lawsuit with the family of a boy who died during a swimming class.

Abdullahi Charif, 12, died in March, 2014, just days after he was pulled from a pool at St. Louis Park Middle School.
He had been in the pool for gym class.

According to the family’s attorney, Charif’s teacher knew he couldn’t swim.

On the day he drowned, the attorney said evidence in the case showed the teacher was using an iPad while allowing everyone to play in the deep end of the pool.

According to a medical expert, Charif was under water for more than 15 minutes before anyone discovered him.

The settlement totals $3 million.

Body of Missing 20-Year-Old NJ Track Star Found in River
Published at 4:44 AM EDT on Jun 2, 2015

Track-Star-Pulled-Hudson.jpg

The body of a 20-year-old New Jersey track star who has been missing for five months was found in the Hudson River, according family members and officials.

Family members say the body of Timothy Hamlett, of Teaneck, was pulled from the river Friday inside the NYPD jurisdiction that covers Washington Heights in Manhattan. The New York City medical examiner’s office determined the cause of death to be suicide by drowning.

It's unclear how he ended up in the river or how long his body had been there.

Hamlett’s parents said they had last seen him on Dec. 26, when he told them he was going to Washington Heights to visit a friend. In January, police found his cellphone and wallet in that area, near Public School 173.

Hamlett was a sprinter on the University of Pennsylvania’s track team and a former Don Bosco High School track star, according to The Bergen Record.

Hamlett’s parents have said that their son’s personality changed after he started taking athletic, dietary and male-enhancement drugs. The college junior was on leave from the University of Pennsylvania and in September police had charged him in connection with accusations that he had thrown bricks through the windows of nine homes and three parked cars.

“Please know that we are comforted by your prayers, support, the wonderful memories of extraordinary joy that we shared with our son, and of course, God's healing grace and love,” Hamlett’s parents wrote on a Facebook page they created to help find him.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. on June 12 at Community Baptist Church in Englewood, New Jersey. Family and close friends will gather for a private ceremony at a later date on Martha’s Vineyard.

Hamlett’s family is asking that instead of sending flowers, donations be made to Legal Outreach to the Timothy Akil Hamlett Fund in support of their Summer Law Institute at the NYU School of Law/PACT.

Parents blame energy supplements in Ivy Leaguer’s death

The body of an Ivy League track star who disappeared after getting hooked on a dangerous mix of “male enhancement” and energy supplements was found in the Hudson River, his anguished parents said.

University of Pennsylvania runner Timothy Hamlett’s behavior grew increasingly bizarre after he started taking the supplements he bought online, including Big Jim, Twins Male Enhancement Formula “Vitalikor Male Enhancement” and Cordyceps — a type of fungus found on insects, his parents, Archibald and Katherine Hamlett, told The Daily Beast after the 20-year-old junior philosophy major vanished on Dec. 26.

Cops found Timothy’s body in the river off upper Manhattan on Friday afternoon, and the city medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by drowning.

Experts told The Post that supplements can cause dangerous physical and mental problems — especially when taken in combination.

“The dietary supplement industry is unregulated, and we often don’t know what’s in the bottle, and the label doesn’t reflect what’s in the bottle,” said Paul Offit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

He said a person taking a cocktail of such drugs has no idea what’s in them, and that the combinations could cause serious physical or psychological harm.

“Let me tell you how bad it is. You not only don’t have a safety profile, you don’t have a labeling standard. So what’s on the label is not reflective of what’s in the bottle. Just because the label looks pretty doesn’t mean it’s right to take it. How much has to happen before people wake up to the fact?”

Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School who has studied such supplements, said that since the contents may be unknown, “the effects on the human body are completely unknown.”

Hamlett, who was on leave from the school to deal with psychological issues, was last seen near the George Washington Bridge.

“This was supplement-induced psychosis,” Katherine Hamlett said.

On Tuesday, his mom and dad, who live in Teaneck, NJ, mourned their son. “If I had a chance to change places so he could live, I wouldn’t hesitate and that’s the essence of the tragedy for us as a family,” Katherine told The Post.

Body Of Williamstown High School Student Found In Monroe Township, NJ Lake

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) – Police in Monroe Township have released more details about a teen who disappeared while swimming on Wednesday.

Darius Boyer, a 17-year-old student at Williamstown High School, was found dead in the lake between Piney Hollow Road and the Atlantic County Line on Thursday.

Crews had initially been dispatched to the area to search for Boyer on Wednesday, after his friends said he didn’t make it to shore while swimming in the lake.

The victim’s friend, Tom Sprenger says, “I’m not taking it good. Last night I was at the football field and I was crying there.”

Emergency personnel first searched the area on Wednesday evening but were unable to find Boyer. The search resumed Thursday morning and crews found the teen’s body around 1 p.m.

“Blue Hole, it’s like people go out there a lot because people have fires out there to hang out, some people go swimming, but there is under tow and I guess he got caught by it.”

People who live near the Blue Hole say it is a nuisance.

Corine Stark says, “There’s been fights and arguments, and I’m sure there’s been drug issues and things like that. But the police are on it constantly trying to keep everybody safe.”

Stark says most people teach their kids not to swim in the lake, which is off limits, but over the years there have been several drownings.

“Of course the kids jump the fence and that’s what happened. It’s sad, it’s very sad.”

Police say Boyer will have an autopsy, but do not suspect foul play.

There is a vigil for Boyer at the Williamstown High School football field scheduled for 9 p.m.

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) – Irving police have arrested 30-year-old Patricia Allen in connection with the drowning deaths of her three children.

Allen, who took all five of her children to an Irving apartment complex pool on June 24, has been charged with Injury to a Child, a second-degree felony.

Police say the drownings were initially investigated as accidents, but during the investigation they talked to witnesses who said Allen was on her phone and texting while her children were in the pool. The witnesses also told police none of the children were wearing any kind of floatation device. Allen admitted she did not know how to swim, but said her children did.

Two other witnesses told police Allen didn’t recognize her children were under water until they walked into the pool area.

Three of Allen’s children, Anthony Smith, 11, August Smith, 10, and Treshawn Smith, 9, were pulled from the pool. August died shortly after being pulled out of the pool. First responders said the water was so cloudy, it was difficult to find her and she spent more time under water than her brothers. Anthony and Treshawn died five days later in the hospital.
