Two men get away after robbing Metro-East bank
05:16 PM CDT on Monday, May 11, 2009

(KMOV) -- The search is on for a couple of brazen bank boondits following a holdup in Fairview Heights.

According to the FBI, the Region's Bank near the St. Clair Square Mall was robbed on Monday morning around 10:40 a.m.

FBI officials tell News 4 that two black males wearing white T-shirts robbed the bank. One of them was wearing a ski mask and at least one of them was armed with a semi-automatic pistol.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after the call for a robbery in progress came out.

The suspects reportedly fled the scene on foot before the police arrived.

When police arrived on the scene, they secured the
perimeter, made contact with the people inside the bank and, when they determined it was safe, they let all of the employees and customers leave the bank.

Police stayed on the scene to investigate the building. The bank is in a three-story building and police had to search every floor with K-9 units to make sure that the building was clear.

This Region's Bank is in the 10900 block of Lincoln Trail near Highway 159. The bank is across the street from the St. Clair Square Mall.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS -- Authorities this afternoon continued to seek two men who robbed Regions Bank, near the intersection of Lincoln Trail and Illinois Route 159, earlier today.

Police responded to a report of a robbery in progress at about 10:30 a.m., then surrounded the three-story building for about two hours before determining that the robbers had already fled, Assistant Police Chief Nick Gailius said.

Gulfport police said Monday they want to hear from anyone with information about an attempted armed robbery Sunday at a Chevron on U.S. 49.

It was the second foiled heist on the Coast since Friday, but in this case the bandit got away.

A suspect, who demanded money at the Chevron station around 11:05 a.m. Sunday, left frustrated because he couldn’t open the cash drawer, said Gulfport Police spokesman James Griffin. The Chevron is in the 9200 block of U.S. 90.

Griffin said a man with an unknown object in his hand demanded cash and forced the clerk on the floor. The clerk rep
orted she wasn’t sure if the object was a gun, Griffin said.

The suspect fled, leaving in an unknown direction.

In the other case, a state trooper foiled a bank robbery in progress in Ocean Springs on Friday afternoon.

Police said Jason Jamel Barial, 24, of Mobile, had allegedly handed a bank teller a note demanding money and implied he had a gun. The teller caught the attention of a state trooper who had stopped by the bank. The trooper apprehended Barial and held him for police.

“It is because of the trooper’s quick, professional assessment of the situation and his decisive action that the suspect was quickly apprehended without injury to anyone,” said Ocean Springs Police Chief Lionel Cothern.

Municipal Court Judge Matthew Mestayer set Barial’s bond Monday at $50,000. Barial is charged with armed robbery.

Both cases remain under investigation.
