Chicago police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a former West Rogers Park man suspected in a hit-and-run that killed a woman as she walked from a bar where she had just finished working late Halloween night.

The suspect, identified by police as Carlos Castillo, didn't have a driver's license when he allegedly struck Rachel Gilliam, a 25-year-old DePaul University student, at Cullom and Lincoln avenues, state authorities said. She was walking from her bartending job at Bowmans Bar & Grill, 4356 N. Leavitt Ave., about 3 a.m. on Nov.1

At a news conference today at the Central Police District, officials said Castillo, 23, whose last known address was in the 2600 block of West Jarlath Street, may have fled to Mexico after the crash.

Gilliam's stepfather, Ron McMickle, said he and Gilliam's mother have been following up with detectives in the months since her death.

"This will open up a new pathway for us, and I think it's a big relief in having a person identified," McMickle said.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating Castillo. A day after the crash, Castillo quit his job at a North Side food store, telling his boss he was leaving for Mexico to care for his sick mother.

A tipster who heard about the hit-and-run on the news led police to Castillo's home, police said. In December, police served a search warrant at the residence and found a silver vehicle with front-end damage. Physical evidence linked Gilliam to the vehicle, a police source said.

Police said there was also a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the hit-and-run.

Castillo, who obtained a driver's permit in 2003, had been involved in a traffic collision and cited for driving without a license that year, officials from the secretary of state's office said. He was cited again for driving without a license in 2007 and his driving privilege was revoked the next year. He was also convicted in 2008 on a felony stolen-goods charge, court records said.

McMickle said he had been reminiscing a few days ago about Gilliam, sharing photos of a safari they had taken to Africa last summer.

"It was a very expensive trip and I was dragging my feet, but I'm so grateful we had the opportunity to do that," McMickle said. "It was just such bad timing to lose her life. She was just getting ready to find herself."

Anyone with information about Castillo's wherabouts is asked to call the Chicago Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Unit, 312-745-4521.

Drunken welfare squaw kills man in head-on collision

tsinhnahijinnie.jpg

A suspected drunk driver in a 1980 full-size Chevy pickup crossed the center-line while going west on Van Buren Street at about 57th Avenue, slamming head-first into a Tracker.

The male driver of the smaller vehicle, who police still haven't identified, flew out of the Tracker and died at the scene.

Shawn Marie Tsinhnahijinnie, 36, survived the wreck and was later found to have a .190 BAC, court records show.

Having recovered slightly from her injuries, she was booked into jail on February 12 and charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault.

The Gila River Community member, who's unemployed and lives in Laveen, is not only a horrendous driver with a history of failing to stop at red lights, blowing off fines, and not buckling up kids in her car, she's a major contender for Worst Mother of the Year -- a competitive award in a town where parents lock their kids in closets for weeks at a time.

You see, Tsinhnahijinnie also had her 14-month-old daughter in the pickup with her at the time of the collission -- and naturally, the kid wasn't in a child seat.

"The infant was found on the floor of the vehicle, underneath the dash, on the passenger side..." court records state.

The child will reportedly be okay. From the looks of Tsinhnahijinnie's mug shot, so will she. Barely a scratch on her face. And her old truck didn't even have an airbag.

NEW CANEY, Texas — A driver was placed under arrest Saturday after a deadly hit-and-run in southeast Montgomery County. The victim, 13-year-old Kendrick Owens, was killed when he was struck by the suspect’s pickup truck. It happened on FM 1485 and Kidd Cemetery Road.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said several motorists reported a reckless driver traveling in a 1998 blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck around 9 a.m.
Shortly after, a wrecker driver spotted the vehicle and began to follow it.
Owens, a seventh grader from Keefer Crossing, was leaving a sleepover. He and a friend were walking on the paved shoulder when the pickup truck swerved into their path.
The friend managed to jump out of the way, but Owens was hit and the impact threw him over the guard rail.
Witnesses rushed to the child’s aid while the wrecker driver continued to follow the fleeing pickup.
The suspect, Javier Correa, then drove to his own home in the 17000 block of Oak Grove.
The wrecker driver confronted Correa, telling him that he had struck a child. The suspect then went into his home and came out a few minutes later.
Officers arrived and placed Correa under arrest. They said he smelled heavily of alcohol.
Owens was airlifted to the hospital with a severe head injury. He could not be saved.
Family and friends gathered at the New Caney Worship Center Saturday evening to hold a vigil in Owens’ memory.
DPS troopers said Correa is now being charged with failing to stop and render aid and intoxication manslaughter.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—A man convicted of killing a Corpus Christi police officer during a high-speed chase has been sentenced to death.
Jurors imposed the penalty for 22-year-old Daniel Lee Lopez of Corpus Christi on Friday. Lopez says he wanted a death sentence and never meant to kill the officer.
Lopez was convicted Tuesday in the March 2009 death of 47-year-old Lt. Stuart Alexander.
Prosecutors say the officer was trying to use spike strips to stop Lopez’s sport utility vehicle as Lopez fled a reported disturbance. Lopez says he was trying to avoid the spikes when he hit Alexander.
Lopez was sentenced to prison for several other convictions related to the chase, including five counts of attempted capital murder and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

DENVER -- Denver police arrested a man they said left the scene of an auto-pedestrian accident but later returned after being persuaded by his parents.

The pedestrian was hit at the intersection of Evans Avenue and Josephine Street around 1:50 a.m. Saturday. The intersection is only two blocks from the University of Denver campus.

When police arrived, they found the victim, identified as Lindsey Howland, 24, who was taken to Swedish Hospital in critical condition, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Police said the driver of the sports utility vehicle fled the scene on Evans after Howland was hit.

A short time later, Robert Jesse Gallegos arrived at the scene with his parents. Police arrested Gallegos, 22, on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular assault and misdemeanor DUI., Jackson said.

Gallegos' 34-year-old sister, Lola Gallegos, was in the car with her brother and told The Denver Post that he returned to the scene. She said her brother was driving her car because she was drunk. She said he performed a sobriety test at a traffic stop less than 30 minutes before the crash, and officers allowed him to drive away.

The sister said she did not see the crash.

SANTA FE, N.M. --
The man police believe is responsible for a deadly crash over the weekend in Santa Fe was in court Monday.

Deshauna and Del Lynn Peshlakai were headed home from Santa Fe with their parents to the Navajo community of Naschitti, south of Shiprock, on Friday when a pickup truck slammed into the back of their car.

The pickup's driver -- James Ruiz, 34, of Albuquerque -- was arrested on two charges of vehicular homicide and held in the Santa Fe County Jail.

Police suspect alcohol was involved.

According to the criminal complaint, "Ruiz made no attempt to brake" before he slammed into the cars that were stopped at the light.

Police reports show that Ruiz "drank 6 to 7 beers between 1 p.m. and the 30 minutes prior to the crash," which was around 8 p.m.

A search warrant states Ruiz told officers he had been at the Blue Corn Cafe and Applebee's prior to the crash. It also states that Ruiz attempted to run away after the incident.

Police said field sobriety tests could not be performed on Ruiz, because he suffered head and eye injuries in the crash.

Court records indicate Ruiz has previous DWI offenses. His first DWI offense was in January 2001, where he pleaded guilty.

In May 2008, he had another DWI offense where he entered a plea of not guilty. Jury selection for that case was set for this Wednesday.

He also pleaded guilty to a series of driving offenses in 2003 and 2005.

Before the judge imposed bond in Santa Fe magistrate court Monday, one of the Peshlakai family pleaded with the judge saying, "We would like the highest possible bond for Ruiz."

Ruiz's stepmother, Mary-Ann Ruiz, said tearfully, "It's my sincere apology to what happened. We've been trying to work with James, have not been successful."

Action 7 News has learned that Ruiz was living with his mother in Albuquerque at the time of the incident.

Police said those riding in the car with Ruiz-- a male and female passenger -- could also face some charges.

Ruiz is being held on a $2 million, cash only bond.

A state-wide manhunt ensued.

The murderer was found hiding in a wooded area and as soon as he took a shot at the SWAT team, officers opened fire on him They hit the guy 68 times.

Naturally, the liberal media went nuts and asked why they had to shoot the poor undocumented immigrant 68 times.

Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel: 'Because that's all the ammunition we had..' Now, is that just about the all-time greatest answer or what!

The Coroner also reported that the illegal alien died of natural causes. When asked by a reporter how that could be since there were 68 bullet wounds in his body, he simply replied "when you are shot 68 times you are naturally gonna die."

Hit-and-run suspect abandons car in middle of I-5

CHEHALIS, Wash. – A 20-year-old Centralia man abandoned his car in the middle of Interstate 5 and fled after slamming into a pickup and causing it to roll over late Saturday, the Washington State Patrol reports.

The driver, Carmen Victor Rodas-Urias, was later found and taken into custody. WSP is recommending several charges against him, including felony hit-and-run, vehicular assault and DUI.

State troopers were called to the scene at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

An investigation determined that Rodas-Urias was heading south on I-5 at high speed in a 1991 Nissan when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the rear of a 2004 Chevy pickup, the WSP said in its report.

The impact caused the pickup to roll over several times, injuring the driver, a 52-year-old man from Newburg, Ore.

Rodas-Urias then abandoned his Nissan in the middle of the freeway and took off running.

A third vehicle, a 1997 Dodge, then crashed into the Nissan that had been left abandoned in the freeway.

The driver of Chevy pickup was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with lacerations to his face and scalp. The driver of the third vehicle was treated at the scene for minor cuts and released.

Authorities later tracked down Rodas-Urias near his residence in Centralia and took him into custody. He was uninjured.

Woman Accused In Hit-And-Run Goes To Court

Vilma Buchala Accused Of Hitting Destiny Garcia At Bear Creek Park
POSTED: Wednesday, March 31, 2010
UPDATED: 5:30 pm CDT March 31,2010

Vilma Buchala, Destiny Garcia

HOUSTON -- A woman accused of hitting a 7-year-old girl with her SUV and fleeing the scene went before a judge on Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Destiny Garcia, 7, was leaving the soccer fields at Bear Creek Park on March 22 with her mother when she broke away and bolted across the parking lot.

Houston police said Vilma Buchala, 45, hit Destiny. Witnesses said she got out of her SUV, claimed she didn't hit the girl and then left.

Destiny was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she died on March 23.

A week after Destiny's death, Buchala, who is a police officer's wife and a Catholic school teacher, was charged with third-degree felony failure to stop and render aid.

Judge Mike McSpadden found that there was probable cause to continue the state's case against Buchala.

Investigators said Buchala did not cause the accident and would not have faced charges if she had stopped and waited for officers.

Buchala's attorney, Ed Musick, said that she feared for her life after being intimated by several witnesses on the scene.

"You have the family screaming and hollering and running around like crazy. If you feel you are the focus of that anger, it can be very intimidating," the defense lawyer said. "My client was on the scene of that accident and did make sure the victim was receiving attention."

Musick said Buchala saw Columba Ferrel comforting her daughter and that she knew help was on the way.

"However, the law takes it one step further. The law requires that you are on the site until you provide your information and everything else," Musick said.

He said Buchala was remorseful.

"You can see that this has had a tremendous toll on her," Musick said. "She is very concerned for the family of the little girl, very concerned about the victim more than even her own situation."

According to the probable cause document, part of the SUV that hit Destiny was found at the scene was tagged as evidence. Buchala voluntarily turned over her vehicle to police and it had damage consistent with what was found at the scene, the document read.

Destiny's mother picked Buchala out of a photo lineup, police said.

Buchala is a teacher at St. Jerome Catholic Community, located at 8825 Kempwood Drive. Musick said she has not been able to work since the incident because of stress.

If convicted, Buchala could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. She is due back in court on April 28.

On Tuesday, Destiny's mother, Columba Ferrel, said she could not forgive Buchala for what happened.

"I feel lonely. I feel a lot of pain in my heart. I feel like there's a hole in my heart," she said.

Destiny's organs were donated to five people. A 7-year-old girl received her heart, a 35-year-old received a kidney and pancreas, a 10-year-old received her lungs, a 1-year-old received her liver, a 19-year-old received her intestines and a 67-year-old received a kidney.

"She died for someone else," Ferrel said.

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- The Hall County Sheriff’s Office has set up a fund to help a deputy who lost several members of his family in a car accident.

Officials said some of Officer Larry Perry’s family was traveling from Georgia to Jacksonville Friday night when their van was clipped by a speeding car, sending it into the median, where it was hit by a pickup truck.

Those who died were identified as Perry’s ex-wife, Melissa L. Mitchell, 39; Miya Mitchell, 11; and Perry’s 4-year-old twin sons, Christian and Keyshawn Perry, all of Lawrenceville. The others who died were Brenda Mitchell Edwards, 57, and Dhanja Mitchell, 16, both of Jacksonville.

Perry has been employed by the Sheriff's Office for about three years and is assigned to the Jail Division, said Hall County officials.

Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the Larry Perry Children's Memorial Fund can do so at any United Community Bank Branch, the Hall County Sheriff's Office Headquarters on Main Street, or at the Hall County Jail.

Meanwhile, Pedro Juan Ocacia Alcazar is charged with six counts of vehicular homicide in connection with the accident.

He's being held in the Nassau County Jail with bail set at $300,000.

Channel 2 Action News looked online and found documents indicating Alcazar's has an extensive criminal record.

Police in two north Florida counties have arrested Alcazar more than a dozen times since the early 1990s. Alcazar has been arrested on charges ranging from unsafe driving and driving on a suspended license to battery and drug charges.

18-Year-Old Charged In Chaska Crash

Police say Jesus Julian Del Rio, 18, of Chaska, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, which left Del Rio's passenger with life-threatening injuries.

CHASKA, Minn. (WCCO) ― An 18-year-old Chaska man has been charged with two counts of criminal vehicular operation for a single-car crash on April 12, near Hickory Street and Highway 61.

Police say Jesus Julian Del Rio appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, which left Del Rio's passenger with life-threatening injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, Chaska Police were dispatched to a one-car crash at 1:30 a.m., last Monday near the intersection of Hickory Street and County Road 61. Upon arrival, they found the car had crashed into a utility pole, but no driver was found.

Police say there was a case of Corona beer on the floor of the front passenger seat of the car and a passenger trapped in his seat. Ricardo Flores was not responsive, but was heard groaning at the scene of the crash, according to the criminal complaint.

Flores was immediately transported to the Emergency Room at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee, then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center. A cousin of Flores told police he suffered three broken ribs, kidney damage, liver damage, lung damage and was in a coma due to brain swelling.

The prognosis for Flores is uncertain at this time, according to the complaint.

Investigation at the scene of the accident indicates that Flores was not wearing a seat belt and the air bag may have been disabled.

Police did not located Del Rio at the scene of the accident, but were able to arrest him, identifying him as the driver, after the crash. Del Rio allegedly fled the scene, jumped over a chain link fence and fell into a large concrete flood control canal.

Del Rio told police he had three beers and took off because he heard sirens, according to the complaint. He initially gave officers a fake ID, claiming to be Jesus Rio Matla, 22, according to police.

Del Rio has a set bail of $20,000 cash or a $200,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Carver County District Court at 8:30 a.m. April 23.

Wrong Way Driver On I-85 Causes Fatal Crash
DeKalb Police Say One Person Died
POSTED: 7:36 am EDT April 25, 2010
UPDATED: 7:47 pm EDT April 25, 2010

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A wrong way driver caused a fatal crash on I-85 southbound at Shallowford Road Sunday.

A DeKalb County Police spokesman said one person died at the scene and three others were injured.

Police said a green BMW entered onto I-85 from Shallowford Rd. and began traveling north in the I-85 southbound travel lanes.

Police identified the driver of the BMW as 26-year-old Manuel Rivera.

A short time later, the BMW struck a Gold Lexus in the center lane of the interstate. The impact sent the BMW off into the HOV lane while the Lexus stopped in the third lane from the right side of the road.

The Lexus was then struck by two additional vehicles before finally coming to a rest in the right lane. The driver of the Lexus, Steven Naraine, died at the scene of the accident as a result of the injuries he sustained. At least the victim was a nigger.

Rivera was in serious condition and he was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital by DeKalb Fire and Rescue. The drivers of the two additional vehicles were taken to local hospitals for evaluation but were released.

Rivera is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Rivera is being charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, DUI and driving on the wrong side of roadway. He is still at the hospital in stable condition and once released will go immediately to the DeKalb County Jail.
