GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Greenville police said that a 2-year-old was girl was shaken to death by a relative on Monday.

Officers were called the Greenville Memorial Hospital Monday morning where a doctor told them that the child, Jakorsha Dodd, had been brought into the emergency room at about 11:15 a.m. non-responsive and in respiratory distress. The doctor said Dodd was treated for injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Police investigators said they arrested 51-year-old Judy Mae Greer, a cousin who lived in the child’s home.

"I don't know exactly if this was an intentional act or accidental on her part. We don't really know. Her actions, shaking a child, we believe at this point is what led to death," said Sgt. Jason Rampey, of the Greenville Police Department.

Greer was watching the toddler when she was severely injured. The child's mother and grandmother were also at home at the time.

The toddler's mother, Joquin Dodd told News 4 this was a terrible accident not a crime.

"I don't believe she would have done that to my baby. When I walked in she was a holding a TV. She said 'I'm sorry the TV fell. The TV fell.' I said 'what was you doing?' She said 'I was moving a cover or something and it fell'," said Dodd.

Jakorsha Dodd was pronounced dead at about 9:30 p.m. Monday. The Greenville County coroner says an autopsy revealed Dodd died from shaken baby syndrome.

Greer is charged with homicide by child abuse. She is being held in the Greenville County Detention Center on no bond. According to arrest warrants she could be sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The father and stepmother of a toddler who suffered severe injuries Tuesday night have been arrested.

Three-year-old Jeremiah was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center Tuesday night with traumatic head injuries after he reportedly fell in the bathroom of a Sacramento apartment, say police.

Police were called out to the apartment to investigate the incident, and say that Jeremiah's injuries are inconsistent with an accident -- even Jeremiah's family says the facts just don't add up.

"I don't want anything to happen to my grandbaby. I'm praying to make sure my grandbaby stays alive," said Malvona Dupree, Jeremiah's grandmother. "I don't think it's an accident."

Police say Jeremiah's injuries were not accidental. They believe his injuries were caused by Jeremiah's father, Adrian McRath, and his stepmother, Dayshawna Lawrence. They were both arrested Wednesday and charged with child endangerment and inflicting corporal in injury to a child and have been booked in the Sacramento County Jail. Their bail is set $500,000.

Jeremiah is listed in critical condition.

SPRINGFIELD - People who shake a baby to death would be added a special state registry under legislation sent to the governor's desk by the Illinois Senate on Friday.

The measure, approved 53-0, was pushed by Rebecca Gibson of Herrin, whose child was shaken to death by a boyfriend. The legislation would require people convicted of such a crime to be added the Illinois Child Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry.

"Down the road, these criminals need to be watched closely so they don't have a chance to commit another similar crime," said state Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, the bill's sponsor.

The House also approved the measure. It now makes its way to Gov. Pat Quinn for his approval. The legislation is House Bill 5762.

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - A teenager in Rock Hill is behind bars, charged with child abuse after police say his infant son was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to a police report obtained by WBTV, Coree Baker, 19, has been charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.

Police say paramedics were called to 4697 Janay Court on Wednesday, May 26th, at 1:35 p.m. to pick up the child who was then taken to Piedmont Medical Center. The report does not specify who called 911.

A emergency room nurse said the child suffered bruising on this left face and eye, left shoulder, wrist and legs. The nurse also said the child was lethargic, had difficulty breathing and only responded to pain stimuli.

According to the police report, a CAT Scan showed the baby had bleeding on his brain. The injuries, according to the nurse, were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The nurse then notified the Rock Hill Police Department who responded to the hospital emergency room to consult with the nurse.

The report further states that Baker, who is the child's father, was with the child all night before the child was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Baker was taken to the York County Detention Center where charges were filed against him.

Man accused of shaking baby to death

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a man accused of beating and shaking a child to death.

Police arrested Ian Arnold, 22, and charged him with aggravated child abuse, Wednesday morning.

On Monday, Arnold admitted to shaking 1-year-old Kamarie Bowles, Jr., whom he was baby-sitting. According to police, the incident occurred at an apartment building located at 5990 NE 18th Ave. Police said, Arnold was friends with Kamarie's parents and shared the apartment with Kamarie's mother.

Kamarie was transported to Holy Cross Hospital, but was later transported to Broward General Medical Center because of the severity of his injuries. On Wednesday, the young victim died from the injuries he sustained.

According to police, Arnold admitted to forcibly grabbing Kamarie.

Reportedly, Shirley Bowles, Kamarie's grandmother, allowed Arnold to live with her at one time. "That was my baby. He was a goofy little boy," Bowles said. "How could you be so selfish, cold-blooded, cold-hearted? Babies cry, and if he didn't want to do it, all he had to do was call me."

Arnold was already on probation for aggravated assault. He currently sits behind bars at the Broward County Jail.

Kalamazoo toddler shaken as baby dies; mother seeks to teach others of dangers

A Kalamazoo toddler who suffered severe head injuries more than three years ago at the hands of his father died Monday after having a seizure.

Kendrell “Boo” Morris was 3 years old.

Kendrell was hospitalized several times in his short life and on March 16, 2007 “was shaken by the person that was to watch over him,” according to an obituary published Thursday by his family in the Kalamazoo Gazette.

The boy, who was born in October 2006, was found to have suffered “severe internal head trauma with active bleeding on the brain” after his mother, Candis D. Blauer, found him unresponsive in his bed, Kalamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Carrie Klein said. Kendrell also had multiple broken ribs that were old and new, Klein said.

Kendrell’s father, Andrew Damarr Morris, then 29, pleaded guilty in September 2007 to a charge of second-degree child abuse and was sentenced in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court to four to eight years in prison, Klein said.

Klein said it is unlikely that prosecutors will seek new charges against Andrew Morris in the wake of Kendrell’s death.

“It would be difficult to prove the direct link between his actions and the death,” Klein said. “Given the amount of time and having to draw a clean line between those two things, it would be pretty hard.”

Kendrell attended Croyden School in Kalamazoo. His mother used to take him with her to talk to teen mothers and school teachers about the dangers of shaking a baby, Blauer said Thursday.

“My main point was to show them how fragile a child is,” Blauer said. “If you’re angry, your child is the last person you should take it out with.”

Kendrell couldn’t walk or talk and he was visually impaired as a result of his injuries, his mother said. But he overcame odds and learned to roll and eat some foods without a feeding tube.

Visitation for Kendrell is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday followed by an 11 a.m. service at Whitley Memorial Funeral Home in Kalamazoo.

There are new developments in the death of a St. Landry Parish toddler. 25 year old Napoleon Prudhomme was indicted this week for the manslaughter of 2 year old Marla Keys.

The incident happened nearly three months ago, when Prudhomme was watching his girl friend's child. According to reports filed by the District Attorney, Prudhomme and Keys were on their way home when the child was placed on the front passenger floor of a Buick Century.

Prudhomme claims the toddler was jumping around in the backseat and would not sit down. That's when he says Keys began banging her head against the dash board. In an attempt to stop her, Prudhomme yanked her by her arms several times. An hour later, the toddler was unresponsive.

"We interviewed Napoleon Prudhomme and he has confessed to the shaken baby syndrome," said Sheriff Bobby Giudroz, with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - A Battle Creek man has been ordered to spend eight years behind bars in the death of his 5-month-old son.

A jury last month convicted Shawn Brown of voluntary manslaughter and child abuse. He received his sentence Monday.

The 26-year-old Brown is accused in the January shaking death of Shawn Brown Jr., a charge the father denies.

Brown told Calhoun County Circuit Judge Allen Gabrecht it's "a hard situation to know that I am charged with killing my son, but I didn't."

Brown testified at trial his son choked on formula and stopped breathing. Doctors testified he died from a severe head injury.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports jurors rejected prosecutors' arguments that Brown was guilty of felony murder and should serve a life sentence without parole.

Pottstown man arrested in shaken baby case
Published: Sunday, August 15, 2010

srv0000009103345.jpg

POTTSTOWN — A 20-year-old Pottstown man was arrested after allegedly causing injury to a 9-week-old infant sending the child to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he remains in critical condition.

According to court records, Tyrel Scott, 20, who was last living at the Salvation Army on King Street, was sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 cash bail while he awaits his preliminary hearing.

Despite a request by law enforcement to set bail at $200,000 cash, District Judge Henry J. Schireson, the on-call judge who arraigned Scott Saturday, set bail at $25,000 cash.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Pottstown Detective Adrian Stead, police were notified by Child Protective Services that a 9-week-old infant was in critical condition at CHOP the evening of Aug. 12. Child Protective Services believed the infant "had been abused based on his injuries."

Doctors were told by the infant's mother that Scott "shook the infant and threw him on a bed," causing the injuries, according to court papers. The infant was transported to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center on Aug. 12 because after Scott allegedly "shook" the infant, the infant started to have seizures and was twitching.

The infant was transported to CHOP and placed in the pediatric intensive care unit, according to court papers. Police said ChildLine had the infant listed as "a near-fatality" because his injuries were so extensive.

The Child Protective Team at CHOP notified police that the infant suffered a subdural hematoma, or brain bleeding, and had two fractures of his skull, one on his right eye and one on the back of his head, according to the criminal complaint.

When police interviewed Scott on Aug. 13, Scott admitted to police "the baby cried on a consistent basis and it was very frustrating for him," according to the criminal complaint. Scott admitted to shaking the baby "because he was crying uncontrollably" Aug. 12, and after shaking the baby, the infant began to twitch, and that's when the infant was taken to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.

Scott told police he did not know how the area around the infant's eye was injured and the "the injury was caused by a bug bite because that was what he was told by the staff at PMMC," court papers indicate. It was when the infant was transported to CHOP by ambulance and evaluated there that it was determined "there was a fracture over the right eye."

Court papers indicate that in addition to shaking the child, Scott also threw the child on a bed, and that's when the infant began to breathe heavily and started twitching.

According to court papers, Scott had previously been evicted from a residence because "the residents there suspected Scott was abusing the infant."

A preliminary hearing for Scott is scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 23 before District Judge Thomas A. Palladino.

Aiken daycare worker charged with homicide by child abuse

13325612_BG1.jpg

An Aiken County daycare owner has been charged with homicide by child abuse after the State Law Enforcement Division says she shook an infant to death in August.

Elouise Wade-Meria Taylor, 51, is accused of shaking a 16-month-old so hard it caused head trauma, resulting in the infant's death.

Agents said the incident happened on August 5 at Taylor's home in Aiken. The infant died on August 6 after being picked up from the daycare by its mother. The child's identity has not been released.

SLED agents arrested Taylor at her house Thursday morning.

A woman who answered the phone at the daycare says Taylor did not shake the child and the injuries must have happened after he left the daycare. She identified herself as Taylor's daughter, but ended the call when asked her name.

Taylor is in jail awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn't immediately known if Taylor has an attorney.

Man arrested in apparent shaken baby syndrome case

Lael Cornelius Isaac

Bossier City police arrested a man Monday for inflicting injuries on his infant son that doctors determined are consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Detectives with the Juvenile Unit arrested 19-year old Lael Cornelius Isaac of Bossier City on a charge of second degree cruelty to a juvenile.

Doctors at Willis Knighton-Bossier called Bossier City police on Sunday night after tests determined the 2-month old baby's injuries were suspicious. Isaac initially brought the baby to the Willis Knighton-Bossier emergency room on Saturday when the child began having seizures. At the time, Issac told doctors he had no idea what was wrong with the baby. The baby was then brought back to the hospital on Sunday for a follow up visit as instructed by doctors at which time Isaac told them the baby had fallen off a bed a few days before.

Detectives contacted Isaac on Monday after doctors received final test results that indicated the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Detectives arrested Isaac upon questioning him and booked him into the Bossier City Jail. The child was transferred Sunday from Willis Knighton-Bossier to LSU Hospital where he is listed in critical condition this morning.

An investigation determined Isaac was with the child at their home at the Alexis Park Apartments in the 2200 block of Loreco Street on Thursday when he became frustrated with the infant because it wouldn't stop crying. Isaac shook the baby several times while cradling him before he tossed the child into the seat of a baby swing. Isaac brought the child to the hospital the next day.

Isaac was transferred this morning to the Bossier Parish Maximum Security Facility. Bond had not been set as of this morning.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis father is charges after police said he shook his three-month-old baby so severely he had to be rushed to LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

Steven Grayson was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated child abuse after he was accused of repeatedly shaking his son.

On December 18, police were called to LeBonheur after being alerted about a possible child abuse case after the three-month-old was diagnosed with a skull fracture and bleeding on his brain.

Police said the baby had been at home inside an apartment complex off of Mill Branch near Shelby Drive.

The three-month-old was initially taken to nearby Methodist South Hospital. Once there, paramedics rushed him to LeBonheur in critical condition.

On December 23, investigators interviewed Grayson. According to the affidavit of complaint, he "admitted that he has shaken the three-month-old victim real hard every day since the day after Thanksgiving."

The baby was physically shaken for 22 straight days before finally being taken to the hospital.

Grayson was being held at 201 Poplar on a $100,000 bond.

Grayson has no criminal history or arrest record. Investigators did not identify his son, so his latest condition is unknown. According to court records, the baby is alive.

Boy dies 2 years after shaking

Ricky Edwards

Savon Edwards

The machines have been unhooked and his body moved from a respiratory center in rural Kentucky to a funeral home.

Savon Edwards, who lived in a persistent vegetative state for two years and one day after being shaken so violently his brain filled with blood, was pronounced dead Monday.

The death could mean more charges for Savon's father, Ricky Edwards.

Edwards, 32, is serving the maximum eight-year prison sentence at the London Correctional Institution after being found guilty of child endangering nearly 11 months ago.

At the time he was injured, Savon became a poster child for a child welfare system that failed to protect him and let him live with a man with a history of hurting children and domestic violence.

After Savon was injured, one of his caseworkers was fired, two resigned and a fourth was suspended for 20 days.

Cincinnati Police Sgt. Robert Liston would like to see more charges leveled against Edwards.

For now, Savon's biological mother is trying to come up with money for a proper burial gown, a grandmother wonders were Savon's final resting spot will be, and police are trying to protect their case in the event one goes forward now that Savon has died.

That will hinge on the outcome of an autopsy and the decision of prosecutors.

Homicide investigators Tuesday told the funeral home in Mount Vernon, Ky., not to prepare Savon's body for burial for now. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

"There is so much that is unknown," said Jerry Gries, Savon's grandmother.

But this much is known: The short, sad life of Savon has fractured a family and called into question whether Tammy Gries, Savon's biological mother, withheld permission for tests that medical professionals at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center wanted to do because she worried that her boyfriend, Edwards, would face tougher charges.

The case also showed how badly the Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services handled it before Savon was injured.

Jerry Gries, who has been raising Tammy Gries' three eldest children since they were born, has been outspoken about her daughter's actions since Savon was hospitalized Dec. 26, 2008, after he stopped breathing.

"Tammy Gries' continued refusal to cooperate in Savon's management prevents proper evaluation of Savon's medical status," Juvenile Court records state.

Liston has called Tammy Gries' behavior shameful.

Saying it could do no more for Savon, the children's hospital asked that Savon be moved to Mount Vernon a year ago.

Savon could be moved only after a judge severed Tammy Gries' legal rights to Savon and made him a ward of the Department of Job and Family Services.

After he was moved, a Juvenile Court judge said he would not authorize the additional test that could have declared the infant dead, something the hospital and Savon's grandmother wanted.

"I feel Savon was done wrong," Jerry Gries said. "The fact that he laid there that long. He never should have laid there that long. Never."

Savon died Monday afternoon. He was 27 months old.

Early indications show he died as experts predicted, from complications of pneumonia.

About one of five children who have such head trauma dies, but it's rare for a child to languish in a coma for two years as Savon did. Infections and pneumonia generally hasten the death of children with severe head trauma, hospital officials have said.

"I cannot believe the timing of this," Jerry Gries said of the two-year anniversary since Savon was first brought to the hospital from the Corryville home where he lived with his father, great-aunt and other relatives.

Savon was never supposed to be left alone with his father, who has a long criminal record that includes a conviction for shaking another child and several domestic violence arrests, the child welfare agency determined shortly after Savon was born.

He was also not supposed to be left alone with his biological mother, who also has a criminal record, is considered mentally ill and has since lost custody of all five of her children.

As it turned out, Savon and his father shared a room and were often left alone when Edwards' aunt was at work and his cousin was in school. One woman, an acquaintance of Tammy Gries, called the child welfare department in 2008 telling them they she was under the impression that Edwards was being too rough with Savon.

"He didn't die on his own," Jerry Gries said. "What else can I say? Someone else killed that baby."

Evelyn Petty

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A 45-year-old baby sitter has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after admitting she killed a 5-month-old boy in her care.

Prosecutors said Evelyn Petty pleaded guilty Wednesday to homicide by child abuse in the September 2009 death of Jordan Roy.

Investigators say Petty originally told them she tripped over a coffee table and dropped the baby on his head, then shook him to try and revive him.

But prosecutors say autopsy results show the baby's only injuries came from being shaken.

Petty will have to serve at least 20 years before she is eligible for parole.

Trenton mother pleads guilty in shaken niglet incident of 4-month-old son

9720942-large.jpg

A city sheboon whose 4-month-old son sustained severe brain damage when she shook him for crying last year pleaded guilty to aggravated assault yesterday.

Kimberly Coleman, 29, of Tyrell Street, will be sentenced to seven years in prison for the assault that caused a series of brain bleeds in the child.

“She admitted that while at the Marriott Hotel in Trenton she shook her four-month-old child numerous times because he would not stop crying,” said Casey DeBlasio, a spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. “He’s not 18 months old and he still can’t sit up and he can’t see as a result of the brain damage.”

The incident occurred on May 9, 2010. Coleman was staying at the hotel overnight when she shook the little boy because he would not stop crying. Police were dispatched to the hotel after receiving a call about a child that was not breathing, DeBlasio said. Coleman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Under the terms of Coleman’s plea deal she must serve 85 percent of her sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Coleman has been held on $100,000 bail since her arrest. The baby is being cared for by his father, DeBlasio said. Coleman is scheduled to be sentenced on July 29.

Kent Couple Charged In Mistreatment, Assault Of ‘Frail, Skeletal Baby’
WATCH IT: Kent Couple Charged In Assault Of Baby

Posted: 3:21 pm PDT August 4, 2011Updated: 6:39 pm PDT August 4, 2011
KENT, Washington -- A Kent couple is jailed, accused of abusing their 7-week-old son after their child was admitted to a hospital and showed signs of abuse, probable cause documents said.

Police said the 19-year-old mother, Ta Rae Demry, is charged with child assault and mistreatment, and the 20-year-old father, Christopher Robinson, is charged with mistreatment.

Police said Thursday they were called July 16 after the parents took their baby to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma. The child was suffering seizures and was admitted in critical condition, documents said.

A hospital social worker called police to the hospital, where nursing staff told officers the baby was below his birth weight, had subdural hemorrhaging and his injuries suggested a pattern of possible abuse. A detective spoke with a doctor who said the boy had likely been shaken and his seizures were due to “extensive brain damage.” The doctor said the child was near death.

In probable cause documents, a detective described the child as appearing “frail and extremely skeletal.”

Police said during the investigation, the parents said they had been giving the child only water because they couldn't find their WIC (Washington State Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program) coupons for formula.

Police said the mother admitted failing to feed the baby and hitting him in fits of anger.

The baby's condition has stabilized but the long-term effect of his injuries remains to be determined. The child is out of the hospital recovering in state custody.

Robinson is in custody at the Kent Regional Justice Center. Demry is at the King County Jail.

The man, Jarrett Lamar Reed, 22, was being held on $100,000 cash-only bail in the St. Louis city jail.

St. Charles police gave this account: At 8 a.m. on Aug, 26, Reed was left alone to watch the baby, Maliah May Thomas, at a St. Charles apartment in the first block of Bel Rae Court.

Sometime during the morning, Reed shook and twisted Maliah violently, causing major internal injuries. He then left the apartment to buy a cigar, and when he returned, he watched television until the baby's mother, Reed's cousin, returned.

The woman checked on Maliah, discovered that she was "ice cold" and dialed 911. The infant was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

During a videotaped interview with police, Reed said that he had become frustrated with Maliah because she would not stop crying. He demonstrated how he grabbed the baby and shook her until she stopped.

An autopsy supported that the child had died from injuries caused by a violent act.

Reed's place of residence is unclear. Court documents listed him as living in the 2100 block of East Linton, but also stated that he was homeless, unemployed and a gang member.
