PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) - Prince George Police say a 27-year old county man is charged with one felony and several misdemeanors after failing to stop for police yesterday.

Police say Juan D. Holmes, Jr., was arrested around 2 p.m. after running several cars off the road and then eluding police, the entire event lasted less than 20 minutes. No injuries were reported in this incident although one police vehicle did receive minor damage.

Just after 1:30 p.m., a motorist phoned police reporting a white and tan pick-up truck running cars off the road on Prince George Drive. Before officers could locate the vehicle a second call came in reporting a similar encounter near Middle Road.

A Prince George County Sheriff's Deputy was the first law enforcement officer to spot the reckless driver on Middle Road; when he activated his emergency lights and siren the driver increased speed and refused to stop. The fleeing driver proceeded onto Jefferson Park Road, Oaklawn Boulevard into the City of Hopewell, then back into Prince George County on Prince George Drive without stopping.

According to police, with county police assisting the sheriff's deputy additional police units were able to use a tire deflation device (spike strips) to puncture the fleeing driver's tires as he re-entered the county on Prince George Drive. The vehicle slowed but continued on two flat tires until he reached the 5600 block of Prince George Drive where he was arrested following a brief foot chase.

Holmes, Jr., from the 6300 block of Edgewood Drive, Disputanta, VA was charged with one felony, eluding law enforcement; and three misdemeanors, driving under the influence, refusing blood or breath test, and driving while his license is suspended or revoked. Police say the man who slammed into a house on Helena Street in a stolen car is a suspect in an assault.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Before police could question a man about an assault on the Northside Thursday morning, officers said he lost control of a stolen car he was driving, hit a telephone pole and slammed into a house.

Witnesses said the car was racing down the Helena Street about 9 a.m. before hitting the pole and the two-story concrete-block building.

Ricky Richardson, the driver, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening conditions and later arrested on domestic assault charges. The two-story structure, which was vacant at the time, was heavily damaged.

Police said that while they believe Richardson was fleeing a knife attack of a woman near Dunn Avenue earlier Thursday, officers said they were not in pursuit and they don't know why he was speeding through the neighborhood.

There is a trail of blood leading from the victim's home to her neighbor's, who called 911.

"It was her nose. It was kind of hanging off from her face," said the neighbor, who didn't want to reveal her identity. "It was a real deep laceration, and she looked terrible."

The neighbor said she thinks the victim's 1-year-old son ran to her house to ring the door bell and get help for his mom.

"He rung the doorbell," she said. "It was horrible. It was like a horror movie, it really was, to look at her face."

Police said they weren't chasing after the man but assumed he was on the run, which may have led to the crash.

"We have no idea why he lost control of the car and ran into the house," Sgt. C.L. Terry said. "There was absolutely no police involvement with him. When we first got here, (the car) had not been reported stolen."

About 100 people in the northwest Jacksonville neighborhood remained without power at 1:30 p.m., but JEA restored electricity by mid-afternoon.

"I was in the house, and I heard a strong impact," resident Lavon Smart said. "I came outside and the powerline outside my house was shaking."

Police Arrest Man Who Drove Car Into Sinkhole

Ira Strong

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gwinnett County police arrested the driver who claimed he drove into a sinkhole because the roadway was improperly closed off.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that on Sept. 21, uniformed officers were dispatched to West Liddell Road in reference to a vehicle being stuck in a sinkhole. The sinkhole that was caused by heavy rains was reported earlier in the day, which prompted the immediate closing of the roadway. Large, orange, reflective construction barrels were set in place to warn and prevent vehicles from driving through that area.

When the officer arrived on scene, he found that some of the barrels had been moved farther apart, making a space large enough for a vehicle to drive through. The driver of the vehicle, Ira Strong, told the officer that he had been driving slowly down West Liddell Road and noticed that some of the barrels had been moved. He continued to say that he thought that maybe the roadway had been reopened and continued driving down the road until the roadway collapsed underneath him.

On Sept. 28, a person contacted the Gwinnett County police and stated he witnessed the incident.

He told officers he contacted the police after he saw a news story about the incident and was concerned about inaccurate statements made by Strong. The witness stated that he had been on his back porch when he saw a gray vehicle approach the barrels that were blocking off the road. He then saw the vehicle drive up onto the curb and sidewalk to get around the traffic barrels. The vehicle then drove back onto the road and continued on until it fell into the hole. Shortly after, he saw a person climb out of the hole and run back to the barrels he had just driven around. The witness said the driver moved the barrels, making a gap large enough for a vehicle to drive through.

Due to statements made by the witness, the incident was assigned to be thoroughly investigated. During the course of the investigation, the investigator found that Strong purposely disregarded the barrels blocking off road and the incident is a result of Strong's own decisions and actions, police said.

Strong was charged with failure to drive within a single lane, unlawful to drive around/ignore a traffic control device, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and tampering with evidence.

Strong was taken into custody without incident, police said. He was transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center, where he has since been released on bond.

Man Racks Up 15-Page Driving Record

Man Pleads Guilty To Driving With Suspended License
POSTED: Friday, October 30, 2009

DETROIT -- St. Clair Shores police said they have a man in custody who has eight outstanding warrants, 14 prior convictions and 70 current suspensions.

Police said 53-year-old Wesley Blount record hasn't kept him from driving. That is, until he was pulled over recently at 9 Mile Road and Interstate 94 in St. Clair Shores for ignoring a stop sign.

"I started looking through the file at this Secretary of State print out and was like, 'Holy Cow!'" said St. Clair Shores police officer Ron Simon.

Simon has been an officer for 38 years, and said he's never seen a driving record like Blount's.

"Apparently he doesn't care if he has a license or not, he's going to drive," Simon said. "When I talked to his he says, 'Well I needed to drive because that was my job.'"

According to records, Blount had his driver's license revoked April 18, 1987. Since then, the Detroiter has been ticketed in Farmington Hills, Farmington, Southfield, Bloomfield Hills, Hamtramck, Oak Park, Livonia, Detroit and Eastpointe.

The violations, all traffic related, range from improper lane usage to speeding and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

"It's obvious he's a danger to the public," Simon said.

Blount has pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license and has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

A Chicago man was charged this morning with striking an on-duty Cook County sheriff's correctional officer with a car after the officer told him to move out of a no-parking zone in front of the the county jail, police said.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Saturday in the 2700 block of South California Avenue, when the officer approached the man, James A. Cooper, 43, as he sat in his car, according to a Chicago police news release.

The officer asked Cooper why he was stopped in a no-parking area and asked him to move, but Cooper refused and became "verbally abusive," police said.

As the officer called for help over his radio, Cooper allegedly tried to speed away, hitting the officer and dragging him about 10 feet along the street.

The 31-year-old officer, a four-year department veteran, was taken to Cermak Hospital on the jail grounds and treated for minor injuries, police said. He is a correctional officer assigned to secure the perimeter of the jail, said Steve Patterson, a sheriff's spokesman.

Cooper got away that night, but sheriff's officers caught up with him about 24 hours later when he returned to the same block and his car was recognized, police said. He has been charged with a count of aggravated battery to a peace officer and is due to appear in court today.

Court records show that Cooper has prior convictions for impersonating a police officer, kidnapping a mentally disabled child, forgery and drug possession.

LOUISVILLE, Ga. - A Jefferson County man is in jail accused of vehicular homicide.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says Friday night a deputy tried to stop a car that was driving erratically outside of Louisville. As the deputy approached the car the man driving, Miller Smith Jr., tried to exit then changed his mind and sped off.

Bond set at $1M for woman accused of running down Elgin teen
November 11, 2009 6:38 PM |

BRANCH.gif

A judge set bond at $1 million today for a Streamwood woman accused of using her car to run down and kill an Elgin teen who had allegedly gotten into a fight with the woman's son over a girl the previous night.

Timera D. Branch, 33, of Streamwood, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death Sunday of John W. Keyes of Elgin. Keyes was struck and killed by a car about 4 p.m. in the 200 block of Center Street of Elgin, police said.

Keyes' family members said after the bond hearing that Keyes had been at a party in Elgin Saturday night, dancing with the girlfriend of Branch's 16-year-old son. The son shoved Keyes, who responded by punching the boy in the eye, the family members said.

The following afternoon, they said, Branch tracked Keyes to a residence on Center Street in Elgin and then pinned him to a building with her car. He was pronounced dead a short time later at an area hospital.

Prosecutors and police declined to comment on the circumstances that led to the death.

"This was just senseless," said Keyes' sister, LaTasha Keyes. More than 20 family members attended the hearing today. They said Keyes did not know Branch's son.

Kane County Judge Clint Hull told Branch she could face a minimum 20-year sentence on the murder charge. Assistant State's Atty. Thomas St. Jules said Branch did not have a criminal history, but had several citations for driving on a suspended license.

Her next court date is Nov. 19.

Because the court was closed to the public because of the Veteran's Day holiday, Keyes' mother watched the proceedings intently from the closed circuit monitor in the county jail lobby.

A few minutes earlier, Dionne Harris had said she wanted to see Branch's face.

"He was my only son," Harris said after the hearing. "He wasn't a bad kid - he wasn't any trouble. It was just a little fight."

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) â┚¬“ The GRTC operator who struck and killed a pedestrian on September 30 at 14th and Franklin streets, was terminated from her position as a bus operator today.

The driver, Teresa Jones, 46, was dismissed for failing to follow standard operating procedures, according to a release from GRTC. She had been placed on paid administrative leave following the accident, which is standard procedure. She had been a GRTC operator since July 2005.

Jones was charged with reckless driving in the accident and is expected back in court in late December.

The deadly accident in which pedestrian Lucienda Lambert was alledgedly hit and killed by the GRTC bus Jones was driving wasn't the only time Jones was cited for reckless driving. She was ticketed in May for going 55 in a 35 mile per hour zone. She paid a fine and went to traffic school and the charge was dropped.

Jones never told GRTC management about the incident, which is against company policy.

Police To Talk To Woods About Early Morning Crash

Woods Treated, Released From Hospital
DOUG FERGUSON, AP Golf Writer
POSTED: Friday, November 27, 2009
UPDATED: 7:30 am EST November 28, 2009

21740636_240X180.jpg

There are plenty of vivid details from the car crash that sent Tiger Woods to the hospital:

His SUV hit a fire hydrant and a tree; his lips were cut and he had blood in his mouth; his wife smashed a rear window with a golf club to get him out; he briefly lost consciousness.

There are also plenty of questions, among them:

Where was he going at 2:25 a.m. Friday? Why was there no word from the Woods' camp for nearly 13 hours after the accident?

Police hope Woods can answer some of them Saturday.

Two troopers tried to talk to the world's No. 1 golfer Friday evening, but his wife said he was sleeping and they agreed to come back Saturday, Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said.

According to the patrol, Woods had just left his Florida mansion when he lost control of his 2009 Cadillac and hit a fire hydrant, then a tree on his neighbor's property. The report said alcohol was not a factor.

The patrol reported the accident occurred at 2:25 a.m. Friday morning and classified the injuries as serious. The first word from Woods' camp -- some 13 hours after the crash -- was that it was a "minor accident," and he was in good condition after being treated and released.

Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor said his two officers found the 33-year-old Woods lying in the street with his wife, Elin, hovering over him.

"She was frantic, upset," Saylor said in a briefing Friday night. "It was her husband laying on the ground."

Saylor said Woods' wife told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident and "broke the back window with a golf club." He said the front-door windows were not broken and that "the door was probably locked."

"She supposedly got him out and laid him on the ground," he said. "He was in and out of consciousness when my guys got there."

Saylor said Woods had lacerations to his upper and lower lips, and blood in his mouth; officers treated Woods for about 10 minutes until an ambulance arrived. Woods was conscious enough to speak, though the police chief said Woods didn't say anything coherent.

In a telephone interview, Woods' father-in-law, radio journalist Thomas Nordegren, told The Associated Press in Stockholm that he would not discuss the accident.

"I haven't spoken to her in the last few ... " Nordegren said about his daughter, Elin, before cutting himself off. "I don't want to go into that."

Woods' mother-in-law Barbro Holmberg also refused to address the matter.

"She doesn't want to comment on private issues like these," Holmberg's spokeswoman Eva Malmborg said.

Damage to the front of Woods' SUV was described by Saylor as "not real extensive, but not real light."

Left unanswered was where Woods was going at that hour. His agent, Mark Steinberg, and spokesman Glenn Greenspan said there would be no comment beyond the short statement of the accident posted Friday afternoon on Woods' Web site that said:

"Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night. He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition. We appreciate very much everyone's thoughts and well wishes."

Asked at an evening news conference if the couple could have been arguing, Saylor said he had no knowledge of that. The couple, married five years, have two children.

The accident came two days after the National Enquirer published a story alleging that Woods had been seeing a New York night club hostess, and that they recently were together in Melbourne, where Woods competed in the Australian Masters.

The woman, Rachel Uchitel, denied having an affair with Woods when contacted by the AP.

"I resent my reputation is getting completely blasted in the media," she said during a telephone interview late Friday. "Everyone is assuming I came out and said this. This is not a story I have anything to do with."

Uchitel said she was in Melbourne two weeks ago with clients and never saw Woods the entire time she was there.

A representative of the National Enquirer declined comment.

"Right now we believe this is a traffic crash," Montes said. "We don't believe it is a domestic issue."

The Florida Highway Patrol said tapes of the 911 call won't be released until they can be reviewed, probably Monday at the earliest. Montes said the accident report was not issued for 12 hours because it did not meet the criteria of a serious crash, and the FHP only released information because of inquiries from local media.

Woods, coming off a two-week trip to China and Australia earlier this month, is host of the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif., which starts Thursday. He is scheduled to have his press conference Tuesday afternoon at Sherwood Country Club. Steinberg said he did not know if Woods planned to play next week.

Woods rarely faces such private scrutiny, even as perhaps the most famous active athlete in the world.

He usually makes news only because of what he can do with a golf club. Few other athletes have managed to keep their private lives so guarded, or have a circle of friends so airtight when it comes to life off the course.

Woods' $2.4 million home is part of an exclusive subdivision near Orlando, a community set on an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course and a chain of small lakes. The neighborhood, which is fortified with high brick walls and has its own security force, is home to CEOs and other sports stars such as the NBA's Shaquille O'Neal.

Woods has won 82 times around the world and 14 majors, becoming the first player of black heritage to win a major at the 1997 Masters when he was 21. He attended the Stanford-Cal football game last Saturday, where he tossed the coin at the start of the game and was inducted into Stanford's sports Hall of Fame at halftime.

He won six times this year after missing eight months recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Even though he failed to win a major, Woods said he considered this a successful year because he did not know how his knee would respond.

HOUSTON -- A woman was run over in a parking lot after a dispute over a parking spot, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Torsha Thompson and her brother, Jamarr, said they were pulling into a parking spot at the Walmart on South Post Oak Road on Wednesday when a black Dodge Durango, which was also trying to park in the space, hit them from behind.

Jamarr Thompson said Torsha Thompson got out of the car and was run over as the SUV sped away.

Torsha Thompson was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.

"I wish anybody that know anything about this can help my sister out," Jamarr Thompson said. "Help us out as well with information."

Anyone with information is asked to call Houston police at 713-247-4065 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
