Robbery Victims Struggle to Reclaim a Stolen Watch After Thief Dies in Fall During Escape

A pawn shop in Los Angeles had asked for thousands of dollars before it would return a stolen Rolex that was treasured by its owner.

stolen-watch-pawn-shop-march-29-2021.jpg

More than a year after a violent street robbery left an elderly couple severely injured, the husband and wife are now closer to reclaiming a Rolex wristwatch that was stolen during the assault.

The watch has been held at a Los Angeles pawn shop that loaned the thief more than $16,000 and had demanded the robbery victims pay the store that amount to get their own stolen property back.

“Almost my life going away,” Hasin Oh told the I-Team about the roadside beating and robbery that took place in Henderson, Nevada on Oct. 19, 2019. Oh was struck on the head, arms, and body before his prized watch was pulled from his wrist. His wife was beaten when she tried to intervene and suffered injuries to her legs.

The 24-karat gold watch was a 75th birthday present from Hasin and Myungja Oh’s three adult children, who said it represented their father’s remarkable achievement of his own "American dream," and was a symbol of his accomplishments as he retired.

Hasin and Myungja Oh immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1975 with only a few hundred dollars. They worked delivery and service jobs before saving enough money to open a discount store, and later, bought, managed and built motels and hotels before retiring to the Las Vegas area.

That man’s name was Robert E. Pearce, 39, and within days, Calvano learned that the stolen watch had been pawned at a broker in Los Angeles, Mr. Steve’s Pawn Shop, after the store entered the watch’s serial number in an electronic system that connects with a law enforcement database.

Calvano obtained the paperwork for the watch from the store, and saw that the person who turned in the watch had left an electronic thumbprint as part of the transaction. It matched Pearce.

“So I submitted an arrest warrant affidavit to our Clark County District Attorney's Office,” Calvano said, which charged Pearce with robbery.

On Jan. 27, 2021, members of an LAPD-FBI fugitive task force attempted to arrest Pearce at a 5th floor apartment on Sunset Boulevard near North Cherokee Avenue. After agents and officers knocked, Pearce could be seen exiting through a sliding door on to a balcony.

“Pearce was seen climbing over the railing where he tried to move down to a lower balcony located one floor below,” an LAPD detective wrote in a death report.

“Pearce lost his grip and fell approximately five stories landing on the south sidewalk of Sunset Blvd.”:D Pearce died about two hours later in the emergency room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Since there was no prosecution, there was no opportunity for a judge to order the watch returned.

A 911 dispatcher working for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office was arrested Wednesday for allegedly refusing to return more than $1.2 million that Charles Schwab & Co. had mistakenly been deposited into her brokerage account, authorities said.

Kelyn Spadoni, 33, of Harvey, was fired after being booked with theft valued over $25,000, bank fraud and illegal transmission of monetary funds, said Capt. Jason Rivarde, a Sheriff's Office spokesperson. Spadoni could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Spadoni is accused of immediately moving the money to another account and using some of the ill-gotten cash to buy a new car and a house, authorities said.

Though the money was put into her account, Rivarde said, "It's not her money."

"She has no legal claim to that money," he added. "Even if it was put in there by mistake. It was an accounting error."

TPD: Police disarm woman with gun, another uses baby as a shield prior to arrest at Tuscaloosa Walmart

Updated May 2 at 11:20 PM

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - Three people were arrested following a chaotic scene outside the Walmart on Skyland Blvd in Tuscaloosa Saturday afternoon.

According to Tuscaloosa Police, it all started when Walmart security tried to apprehend the three for stealing. The incident quickly escalated in the parking lot, but thankfully no one was injured.

Shortly before 1 p.m. TPD says Walmart security confronted 28-year-old Jamarcus Treon Richardson, 24-year-old Fernisha White and 29-year-old Laquashia White at the store exit, after they had been observed stealing in the self checkout line. The three were unable to produce receipts for clothing and candy bars that were inside their bags and cart. Security had already identified that one of the three, Jamarcus Treon Richardson had been banned from the store in 2020.

According to police the suspects became irate:bongo::bongo::bongo:; yelling, cursing and causing a disturbance when security asked them to come into the loss prevention office. That is when an off-duty TPD officer working security at the store approached Richardson and informed him that he was being placed under arrest for trespassing.

Officers say Richardson began resisting arrest and Fernisha White stepped in and attempted to separate Richardson and the officer. The three struggled before the officer was finally able to place the cuffs on Richardson.

The off-duty officer then told Fernisha and Laquashia White that they were under arrest for disorderly conduct, but the two walked outside.

Another customer came inside and told police that one of the women had a gun. At this point, backup TPD officers and TCSO deputies arrived. After a struggle in the parking lot, the off-duty officer was able to disarm Laquashia White of the pink handgun she was holding.

When backup officers approached Fernisha White, they say she was holding her 11-month old baby in front of her as a shield:p, preventing officers from placing her into custody. She eventually handed the baby over to a friend and was placed into custody.

Richardson was charged with fourth-degree theft, trespassing and resisting arrest

Fernisha White was charged with fourth-degree theft, reckless endangerment of a child, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and five outstanding and unrelated warrents

Laquashia White, was charged with fourth-degree theft, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and possession of a pistol without a permit

Alleged Porch Monkey Pirate Posing As Amazon Employee Arrested After Several Fishtown Thefts
By Kimberly Davis
May 3, 2021 at 10:11 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Porch pirates are resorting to some sly tactics to steal packages and gifts. One victim in Fishtown caught an accused pirate posing as someone some may not suspect.

Police arrested the Amazon imposter earlier this evening and it was all thanks to vigilant Fishtown neighbors.

“At first I was like there’s an Amazon guy, but I realized he came up on a bike and he undelivered my delivered packages,” Fishtown resident Trey Dodge said.

That’s what Dodge says his surveillance video revealed to him Sunday on the 1300 block of East Oxford Street.

“He waited across the street and came over and stole something off my neighbor’s stoop, and then came up my stairs and stole a couple packages off my stoop as well,” Dodge said.

This isn’t the first time Dodge has had packages stolen off his porch, but he says this is the most creative approach he’s seen.

“It wasn’t until my neighbor said check it out and then realized it was just someone playing the role,” he said.

We did find some tips for Amazon customers online.

You’re advised to contact customer service to report the theft and file a report with Amazon, as well as your police department. You could also consider having your packages delivered to a more secure location or use Amazon lockers.

“It’s nothing new, no one’s surprised, they’re just more disappointed I think. A couple people agreed with the creativity. A couple people just suggested using lockers and stuff like that,” Dodge said.

Dodge says Amazon did reach out to him. They refunded his money and replaced his water bottle and T-shirt that was stolen.

Surveillance video shows theft by group of teens at Woodland Hills liquor store turn violent

WOODLAND HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A fed-up Woodland Hills liquor store owner says a group of teenagers have been repeatedly showing up to his business and helping themselves to merchandise without paying.

The situation took a violent turn when the teens showed up on Friday and the store clerk tried to stop them. The latest incident was caught on surveillance video.

Surveillance footage shows three girls entering De Ja Vu Liquor on Ventura Boulevard and heading straight to a case containing vape pens.

The clerk's brother told Eyewitness News the group was told to leave, but they started to throw things and broke shelves.

While standing behind the checkout counter, the clerk can be seen on video trying to stop a girl from grabbing an armful of merchandise.

That's when another girl steps in and apparently tries to throw a punch at the clerk, knocking over a plastic shelf and merchandise.

Footage from another angle shows the group walking back into the store, seemingly having a verbal argument with the clerk as he backs away from them.

The teens then proceed to grab stuff off the shelves and one of them grabs what appears to be a liquor bottle and hurls it at the clerk. After knocking over more merchandise, leaving the store trashed, the group leaves the store.

"When they started throwing stuff they broke bottles. They hit him, she tried and punch him in the face," the clerk's brother said. "Liquor was all over the ground."

The group left and returned a third time, making threatening gestures and yelling.
