CBS’s Smith Gushes Over Obama: ‘A Candidate for Change, Particularly on the War’

In an especially glowing interview with Barack Obama on Tuesday’s CBS "Early Show," co-host Harry Smith lobbed softball after softball at the Illinois Senator, including this question about the successful troop surge in Iraq: "Obama is positioning himself as a candidate for change, particularly on the war. Were you a fan of the surge?" Obama’s response was not surprising, but did defy all logic:

No. And it's fascinating to me how the surge is now being defined as a success. That central question remains -- how do we get a change in behavior amongst Sunni, Shia, and Kurds? The only way I believe to trigger that change is to send a clear signal that we are withdrawing, we're not going to have permanent bases there, we will be a partner with them to help stabilize the country, but they've got to make some decisions.




Smith and Obama got along so well that they actually finished each other’s sentences as Smith moved on to Afghanistan:

SMITH: And it seems now that Afghanistan --

OBAMA: Is deteriorating rapidly, which is one of the reasons I objected to this war in Iraq in the first place.

Not only did Smith tee up such ideal questions for the Democratic candidate, but he also praised Obama’s ability to reach across the ideological divide: "Up in the northwest part of the state, the politics are conservative, but for a candidate locked in a tight race, every potential voter needs to be reached." At that moment in the segment there was footage of a woman in this "conservative" part of the state hugging Obama and saying, "We will caucus for Obama."

Smith, who in an October 15 interview with Obama called the Senator a "rock star," used almost poetic language as he described being on the campaign trail with the candidate:

Endless miles of snow-covered prairie roll by. Just like yesterday and not too different from tomorrow...It feels surreal talking global affairs on a custom charter bus rolling through Iowa farm country. But to get to Pennsylvania Avenue, this is the road Obama must take.


In addition, Smith described how Obama has preserved, despite attacks from the Clinton campaign:

In the final sprint to the Iowa caucuses, Obama harbors no illusions. Politics is a full-contact sport...Just days after one Clinton surrogate brought up Obama's past drug use, another, ex-Senator Bob Kerrey, was quoted playing up Obama's Muslim lineage, even though Obama is a Christian...Do you get a sense that there are some in your party who are trying to say it's not your turn?


Just yesterday, in an interview with Hillary Clinton in Iowa, Smith referred to Bill Clinton as her "attack dog" against Obama.

And Smith’s final question to Obama was truly hard-hitting: "Do you feel guilty now, doing what you're doing, being away from your family so much?"

The popular TV personality helps Barack Obama draw big crowds while her fans fume.



WITH less than a week until Iowa's first vote is cast in the 2008 presidential election, the politicians aren't the only ones feeling the heat: Celebrities, who have become important players in the political fundraising process, are under increasing pressure to campaign for their favorite candidates in the early caucus and primary states.

But how a star -- particularly a supernova -- responds isn't always a simple matter of "yes" or "no." With the exception of Oprah Winfrey, who's been working the trail with mixed results for Democrat Sen. Barack Obama, most of the A-listers have opted to stay out of the spotlight for now. (Chuck Norris, who has campaigned everywhere for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Republican candidate, occupies a planet of his own.)

Although it's true that rallies featuring Winfrey in Iowa and South Carolina have drawn some of the biggest crowds of the campaign so far, Obama's people won't know whether they also triggered a backlash until election day.

Winfrey's website has been buzzing for weeks with angry postings about her involvement in the Illinois senator's campaign, something Hollywood, which always keeps its eye on the public mood, is bound to notice -- this is a town, after all, that measures success by weekly grosses and daily TV ratings.

One posting on her site, Oprah.com, accused the talk diva of being a traitor. (By Thursday, that message string had attracted more than 12,000 views.) Another poster told Winfrey to "stop pushing Obama down our throats." (There were 3,000 hits logged on that one.) Another said: "Do you really know Barack Hussein Obama? Scary & something we have to take into consideration!" (There were more than 4,000 views for that.)

"First of all I want to say that I am a HUGE Oprah fan," one poster wrote. "I love what she stands for. She is a strong woman changing the world. However, I have been extremely disappointed with her recent touring with Barack Obama. It is a manipulation and an abuse of her power and influence on the American culture.

"Let the American people form their own opinion, Oprah."

Since Winfrey announced over the summer that she was supporting Obama, more than 25,000 views of more than 345 separate discussions -- almost all of them centering on the campaign -- have been roiling along in the local and world news section of her website. By comparison, there were eight discussions going in recent weeks on the issue of global warming, which had generated about 1,100 views.

An icon of hope, he won't 'kneecap' his foes. But Obama knows what it takes, and how to win.

Barack Obama was badly in need of sleep, but he wasn't going to get any just yet. Late last Wednesday night, the candidate and his wife, Michelle, collapsed on the leather sofa aboard their campaign bus. It was the end of a 17-hour day rolling around Iowa trolling for votes. They had just come from a nighttime rally in Waterloo, where they double-teamed an enthusiastic crowd in an overheated school gym. On the bus, Obama nursed his raw throat with tea from a steel travel mug, his arm around Michelle's shoulder.

The long-awaited Iowa caucuses—portrayed by the pundits as a make-or-break test of a black candidate's viability with white voters, and of his ability to stand up to Hillary Clinton—were the next day. In less than 24 hours, he'd know if it had all been worth it, or if he had been wasting his time. A NEWSWEEK reporter asked him how he felt on the eve of the big event. "I feel calm," he answered. Calm? Not nervous about the results, or plain exhausted after 10 months on the road? "No. Because this is the campaign I always wanted to run. If it doesn't work, it's not because of the organization we built or the respectful tone that we set."

In public, Obama attributes his quick political rise to that "respectful tone," which he believes voters crave after so many ugly, dispiriting campaign seasons. (Which includes most races since 1800.) When he first began thinking about a White House bid, he told advisers that he would be willing to run only if he could do it his way, which meant defying the conventional campaign theology of hitting the other guy hard and first, sticking to simple sound bites and preaching only to the base. He has shown a willingness to stray from his script and risk engaging (or boring) audiences with rambling professorial explanations about the details of this or that policy. And he has tried to rewrite Karl Rove's campaign manual by reaching across racial and party lines to appeal to the broadest—rather than the very narrowest—base of supporters.

It's the Trinity Church of Christ.

Please read and go to this church's web site and read what is written there. It is very alarming.

Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S. If you look at the first page of their web site, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa.

No where is AMERICA even mentioned. Notice too, what color you will need to be if you should want to join Obama's church... B-L-A-C-K!!!

Doesn't look like his choice of religion has improved much over his (former?) Muslim upbringing.

Are you aware that Obama's middle name is Mohammed? Strip away his looks, the big smile and smooth talk and what do you get? Certainly a racist, as plainly defined by the stated position of his church! And possibly a covert worshiper of the Muslim faith, even

ON desks all over Hollywood, there's a note this morning waiting to be sent:

Memo to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton: We think you're aces. Really. And we love your husband. But we're running off with Sen. Barack Obama. Hope you understand. It's all about being part of history. We'll do lunch after the inauguration.

Of course, in certain Westside mansions, loyalty to the Clintons runs deeper than any primary result. But in a town that for many months has been divided by head and heart, a lot of entertainment industry people who chose Clinton because she was the smart choice, the "inevitable" Democratic candidate, are going where their hearts have long wanted to take them -- to a place on the Obama bandwagon (and nobody wants to miss the last seat).

From the beginning, Hollywood has loved Obama's story -- his "pitch" as they say -- but were wary of his real box office potential. Iowa and now possibly New Hampshire have lifted that uncertainty. The only thing the town likes better than a great story is a winning one.

Phones started ringing even before the junior senator from Illinois had completed his Iowa victory speech, which hardened political pros compared to legendary addresses given by the Kennedys, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Ronald Reagan. West of La Cienega, the clips on cable news were the best audition tapes anybody had seen in a long time.

If Clinton loses in New Hampshire tonight, predicted longtime political operative turned Hollywood producer Brian Quintana, Hollywood "will defect to Barack in droves."

"It is not a question of loyalty; Barack is simply too close to making history for Hollywood not to be part of it," Quintana said. "For most of us, Hillary was our first choice, but she has come up short. Barack has become a movement."

David Geffen, an early Obama supporter who is looking even more prescient than usual, shared a celebratory call over the weekend with Kelly Meyer, wife of NBC-Universal chief Ron Meyer. Kelly stepped out as one of Hollywood's early fundraisers for Obama, even though many of her industry friends were going with Clinton. She said Geffen had given her sound advice: Follow your heart.

Now she's getting calls from Clinton supporters who want to join the Obama team.

"It's contagious," Meyer said. "People are invigorated."

Obama supporters Irena and Mike Medavoy spent the weekend calling their Clinton-supporting pals in Hollywood to see if they wanted to switch sides. (They are also helping host a fundraiser in the Pacific Palisades for Obama on Jan. 16.)

"Before, there was a sense that Hillary's nomination was inevitable and Obama didn't have a chance," said Irena Medavoy. "Iowa gave people a lot of hope. I'm not going to name names, but there are people who were supporting Hillary who now want to help Obama."
"As an African American who has supported Hillary, it's tough," said one industry executive who asked not to be named. "You listen to Obama's speech in Iowa, and it's like your DNA kicks in. That's hard to ignore. I've been very loyal, very dedicated. But this is rough. I don't know what I'm going to do."

Norman Lear, liberal Hollywood's elder statesman, is remaining neutral during the primaries. He said Monday that it gives him the benefit of pursuing his real passion in this election, which is organizing young voters to go to the polls. In that sense, Lear -- who founded the voter registration drive "Declare Yourself" -- is set to emerge from the primaries as big a winner as anybody who had their name on the ballot. Iowa had a record turnout among young voters last week, and the same is projected for this week in New Hampshire.

"Young people have a natural sense of spirit and enthusiasm," Lear said. "And Obama was just the guy to capitalize on it."

Obama's church: More about Africa than God?
Chicago congregation has 'non-negotiable commitment' to 'mother continent'


While some election commentators are looking carefully at the level of devotion Sen. Barack Obama has to Islam, it is the strong African-centered and race-based philosophy of the senator's United Church of Christ that has some bloggers crying foul.

Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago is where Obama was baptized as a Christian two decades ago, even borrowing the title for one of his books, "The Audacity of Hope," from a sermon by his senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

The first paragraph of the "About Us" section of the church's website mentions the word "black" or "Africa" five times:

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian. ... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.


Focus on the African continent continues in two of the 10-point vision of the church:


A congregation committed to ADORATION.
A congregation preaching SALVATION.
A congregation actively seeking RECONCILIATION.
A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
A congregation committed to BIBLICAL EDUCATION.
A congregation committed to CULTURAL EDUCATION.
A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
A congregation committed to LIBERATION.
A congregation committed to RESTORATION.
A congregation working towards ECONOMIC PARITY.
Commented Florida blogger "Ric" in discussing vision No. 4: "Commitment to Africa? I thought Christians were to have a commitment to God alone?"

The blogger continued: "First off just by this 10-point layout describing Barack Obama's church, we see that on some issues they are not clear. Even though it sounds good to the reader, it still leaves one guessing and not knowing where they truly stand as a congregation.

"Second, the church seems to place Africa and African people before God, and says nothing about other races in their community or a commitment to help the people in their community.

"Third, the church seems to promote communism by the term they use called 'economic parity.' Is this what Barack Obama truly believes?"

On another page on the website, Pastor Wright explains his theology, saying it is "based upon the systematized liberation theology that started in 1969 with the publication of Dr. James Cone's book, 'Black Power and Black Theology.'

"Black theology is one of the many theologies in the Americas that became popular during the liberation theology movement. They include Hispanic theology, Native American theology, Asian theology and Womanist theology."

Wright rebuts those who might call his philosophy racist, saying, "To have a church whose theological perspective starts from the vantage point of black liberation theology being its center is not to say that African or African-American people are superior to any one else.

"African-centered thought, unlike Eurocentrism, does not assume superiority and look at everyone else as being inferior."

The church's official mission statement says it has been "called by God to be a congregation that is not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that does not apologize for its African roots!"

The Jan. 6 Sunday bulletin had an announcement about how to register for the winter Bible study held by the "Center for African Biblical Studies."

Another page in the 36-page bulletin announced the "Black and Christian New Member Class." All those wanting to become full-fledged members of Trinity "MUST complete your new member class!" warned the announcement, which included a schedule of class times. There was no mention of what class a prospective member might take if he or she were not black.

Demonstrating the church's quest toward "economic parity," one of the associate pastors, the Rev. Reginald Williams Jr., wrote a blurb in the bulletin decrying the powers that be for not making "fresh food stores" available in the black neighborhoods of Chicago.

Wrote Williams in a discussion of infant mortality in the black community: "In West Englewood, one of the five worst areas in the city, McDonald's restaurants abound, while fresh food stores are lacking. The same resources should be made available in each and every neighborhood in this city.

"This is an issue which we must all attack. We must push our policymakers for programs for health education, good stores for proper nutrition and access to health care."

The thought for the day on the same page was a quote from former Rep. Shirley Chisholm: "Health is a human right, not a privilege to be purchased."

Obama recently talked about his faith with the Concord, N.H., Monitor.

"I've always said that my faith informs my values, and in that sense it helps shape my worldview, and I don't think anyone should be required to leave their religious sensibilities at the door," Obama told the paper last week. "But we have to translate those concerns into a universal language that can be subject to argument and doesn't turn into a contest of any one of us thinking that God is somehow on our side."

The candidate told the Monitor he doesn't buy everything his pastor proclaims, saying: "There are some things I agree with my pastor about, some things I disagree with him about. I come from a complex racial background with a lot of different strains in me: white, black, I grew up in Hawaii. I tend to have a strong streak of universalism, not just in my religious beliefs, but in my ethical and moral beliefs."

Obama's popularity has soared in the last several days, with journalists from NBC even admitting to getting caught up in the "feel good" aura of the campaign.

As WND reported, the network's Brian Williams noted on MSNBC yesterday: ""[Reporter] Lee [Cowan] says it's hard to stay objective covering this guy. Courageous for Lee to say, to be honest. ... I think it is a very interesting dynamic."

Confirmed: Barack Obama Practiced Islam

In a recent analysis, "Was Barack Obama a Muslim?" I surveyed available evidence and found it suggests "Obama was born a Muslim to a non-practicing Muslim father and for some years had a reasonably Muslim upbringing under the auspices of his Indonesian step-father." In response, David Brock's organization, Media Matters for America (MMfA), which calls itself a "progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media," has criticized one of my sources of information.

MMfA contends in "Daniel Pipes relied on disputed LA Times article to revive Obama-Muslim falsehood," that "key aspects" of a March 16, 2007, Los Angeles Times article I quoted were later challenged by another newspaper account, "History of schooling distorted," by Kim Barker in the Chicago Tribune on March 25.

Falsehood? That's a strong word.

To assess MMfA's claim, let's review its preferred article and examine what Barker has to say on four topics related to Obama's Indonesian years, 1967-71:

His attendance at a Catholic school;
His attendance at a public school;
His step-father, Lolo Soetoro; and
His friend, Zulfan Adi.
To start with, about the Catholic school, Fransiskus Strada Asisia, which Obama attended 1967-70 (words in square brackets are added by me):

Interviews with dozens of former classmates, teachers, neighbors and friends show that Obama was not a regular practicing Muslim when he was in Indonesia, despite being listed as a Muslim on the registration form for the Catholic school, Strada Asisia, where he attended 1st through 3rd grades. At the time, the school most likely registered children based on the religion of their fathers, said [Israella Pareira] Darmawan, Obama's former [1st-grade] teacher. Because Soetoro was a Muslim, Obama was listed as a Muslim, she said.

The enrollment form from the Catholic school, which has been cited as evidence that Obama was a Muslim in Indonesia [including by the Los Angeles Times], also was rife with errors. It listed Obama as an Indonesian, listed his previous school incorrectly and failed to list his mother, Ann, at all.

About Obama's time at a public elementary school, 1970-71, variously known as the Sekolah Dasar Nasional Menteng No. 1 or the Basuki school, Barker writes:

When Obama attended 4th grade in 1971, Muslim children spent two hours a week studying Islam, and Christian children spent those two hours learning about the Christian religion.

During a recent visit to this public school, Barker found that

Weekly religious classes are required for all students, whether Muslims, Christians or Hindus, under the government curriculum. A new shiny mosque is in the corner of the courtyard. "The Muslims learn about Islam, prayer and religious activity," said Hardi Priyono, the vice principal for curriculum. "And for the Christians, during the religious class, they also have a special room teaching Christianity. It's always been like that."

About Obama's step-father, Lolo Soetoro and his religiosity, Barker writes:

In their first neighborhood, Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers, a few neighbors said. But Soetoro usually was too busy working, first for the Indonesian army and later for a Western oil company. "Sometimes Lolo went to the mosque to pray, but he rarely socialized with people," said Fermina Katarina Sinaga, Obama's 3rd-grade teacher at the Catholic school, who lived near the family. "Rarely, Barry [a nickname for Barack] went to the mosque with Lolo."

Barker learned from his friends and family that Lolo Soetoro, who died in 1987, was "much more of a free spirit than a devout Muslim" and "hardly the image of a pious Muslim."

His nephew, Sonny Trisulo, 49, said Soetoro always liked women and alcohol. One of his health problems was a failing liver. "He loved drinking, was a smart and warm person, the naughtiest one in the family," Trisulo recalled.

As for Zulfan Adi, cited in the Los Angeles Times piece:

Zulfan Adi, a former neighborhood playmate of Obama's who has been cited in news reports as saying Obama regularly attended Friday prayers with Soetoro, told the Tribune he was not certain about that when pressed about his recollections. He only knew Obama for a few months, during 1970, when his family moved to the neighborhood.

Does any of the above information from the Chicago Tribune article refute my analysis, as MMfA contends? It raises questions about two details in the Los Angeles Times account (the accuracy of the Catholic school's registration form and the reliability of Zulfan Adi as a source on Obama). But on the larger issue of Obama's religious practices during his Jakarta years, it confirms the Times account. Note in particular three excerpts from Barker's article:

"Obama's 3rd-grade teacher at the Catholic school, who lived near the family [said that] ‘Rarely, Barry went to the mosque with Lolo'" – confirming that Obama attended mosque services.
All this matters, for if Obama once was a Muslim, he is now what Islamic law calls a murtadd (apostate), an ex-Muslim converted to another religion who must be executed. Were he elected president of the United States, this status, clearly, would have large potential implications for his relationship with the Muslim world.

In sum: Obama was an irregularly practicing Muslim who rarely or occasionally prayed with his step-father in a mosque. This precisely substantiates my statement that he "for some years had a reasonably Muslim upbringing under the auspices of his Indonesian step-father."

Therefore, what MMfA calls the "Obama-Muslim falsehood" is in fact confirmed by both articles as truthful and accurate.

Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire campaign was helped when she responded in a smiling, self-deprecating manner when asked during Saturday night's televised debate why some voters had an issue with her "likeability" and that her rival Sen. Barack Obama only enhanced the positive impact for Clinton when he responded like "a smarmy, prissy little guy taking a slap at her." (Listen here)

Rove said he also believes Clinton's now-famous emotional moment in a Portsmouth, N.H., coffee shop helped turn her campaign around.

"She benefited from two moments that helped humanize her and caused people to remember the positive things about her rather than have Democrats dwell on the concerns they had about her," the former top White House advisor told Cybercast News Service.

"One of them was in the debate, where she got the question about ... the fact people don't like you, and rather than being petulant and angry she responded with a smile on her face and a laugh, saying that hurt her feelings, then said I'll try and push on somehow. Then that moment was, I think, made even better for her by the fact that Barack Obama, who was having a mediocre night in my opinion, rather than keeping his mouth shut proceeded to say, 'They like you well enough.' So, he looked like a smarmy, prissy little guy taking a slap at her. I think that helped her."

Rove, whom President Bush cited as "the architect" of his victorious 2004 reelection campaign, said of Clinton's emotional moment in the coffee shop: "Now, look, I know there is a lot of controversy on this. It says something about the peoples' concern about Hillary Clinton that we are having a debate as to whether or not that was a real moment. But I think it is a real moment. And I think a lot of people look at it, and particularly Democrats, who said, you know, I may have a concern about her. I'm really concerned about whether we're-you know, she is calculating everything. And that was one moment where if you saw it or heard about it, it was hard not to think that was a real moment. I think those two things helped her."

In the Saturday night debate hosted by ABC News and WMUR-TV, Scott Spradling of WMUR asked Clinton: "What can you say to the voters of New Hampshire on this stage tonight who see a resume and like it, but are hesitating on the likability issue, where they seem to like Barack Obama more?"

A smiling Clinton elicited laughter from the audience, when she responded: "Well, that hurts my feelings. ... But I'll try to go on."

"He's very likable," she then said about Obama. "I agree with that. I don't think I'm that bad."

To this, Obama, while looking down at his notes, said: "You're likable enough, Hillary."

In his interview with Cybercast News Service, Rove also stressed the importance to the Republican Party of maintaining its coalition of economic, social and foreign policy conservatives.

"I do think every Republican candidate that I see out there this year understands that we are a coalition of economic conservatives, social conservatives and foreign policy conservatives and that to be successful as a party we have to be knit together as a coalition," he said.

He was critical, however, of this year's truncated primary process, which he believes puts a greater premium on the ability to raise money than the quality of the candidates. It is in the interest of the country to change the nominating system, he argued.

"I am not advocating necessarily that you do away with Iowa and New Hampshire. I just think the process ought to be set up in a way so that there is more chance for more people in the country to have meaningful participation in this," he said.

"Again, this system does not mitigate against the power of money. It strengthens the power of money. Since we began this system, we have been more likely to see self-funders. That is to say, as we have gotten into a place where these things are earlier, shorter, and more of them, we have gotten into a place that places a premium more on money than the quality of the candidate," Rove added.

Clinton insists 'it takes a village.' In Kenya, Obama has one

KOGELO, Kenya – Here in the tiny hamlet that gave the world Barack Obama, they know all about bumps in the road.

Bumps like the bone-jarring festival of craters that mark the approach to Kogelo, where Mama Sarah, Barack's paternal grandmother, lords benignly over a gaggle of Obamas, young and old.

Bad bumps, too, for there is no living in these parts without taking turbulence from the wicked trifecta of malaria, AIDS and crushing poverty that makes the region one of Kenya's most troubled patches.

And yes, little bumps – like the one that dealt a wobble this week to their prodigal son's path to the U.S. presidency, when a misty Hillary Clinton took New Hampshire, against all prognostications.

That last one doesn't worry Mama Sarah too much. In her 85 years, she has seen her reality shift from beneath the colonial control of imperial Britain to the momentous now, when she envisions that soon "Barack may become president of the world."

"If Barack were here with me today I would give him a big hug and say, `Don't worry. Keep going,' Sarah told the Toronto Star.

"It is in God's hands. But I believe God is with him."

Hillary Clinton once opined that it takes a village to raise a child. Here in western Kenya, in the often moisture-deprived scrublands that line the shores of Lake Victoria, Obama has a village. But it most certainly did not raise the Honolulu-born senator from Illinois, whose contact with his African kin was severed by the breakup of his parents when he was but a toddler.

Obama's father, Barack Sr., finished out his life in his native Kenya. By most accounts a brilliant economist, the Harvard graduate died in a 1982 car crash, never living to realize the promise of his son's talent and ambition. He last saw his son in 1971, a difficult encounter the younger Obama described with candour in his 1995 autobiography, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.

Yet in that same book Obama describes the first of his three extended visits to his ancestral Kenyan home, a journey of self-discovery that knitted anew the family ties torn by his father's abandonment.

Speaking in her native Luo tongue, Sarah points proudly to the family photos that line the walls of her humble, single-storey, tin-roof house, in which the creamy complexion of Barack stands out among his darker Obama kin.

"Just by showing Barack who we are and where he comes from, Barack learned so much," she said of Obama's first odyssey in 1987.

The American-born Obama feasted on the family stories, learning that the Obamas of Siaya district have a history as local peacemakers. He fell in love with Sarah's chapati, the pan-grilled flatbread introduced by Indian migrants and now a favourite in Kenyan households. He awoke each day to the crowing of the family's rooster from a small patch of land that has been in the family at least five generations.

Obama learned also of the rash of epidemics that curse Siaya district, where the mosquito-borne malaria parasite and HIV infection rates approach upwards of 35 per cent, according to 2005 figures.

The village, in turn, has come to regard Barack Obama as its foremost native son, according to Mary Kemundo Ogala, a family friend and public health nurse at the Kogelo district drug dispensary, where there is a pharmacist but no doctor.

"Barack Obama, I think, has a magical effect on all Africans. Maybe, in a way, he has that effect on the whole world," Ogala said in an interview at the dispensary, where a "disease-management" class for 40 HIV-infected women and children was underway.

"But I think the impact here is deeper because the district is so deprived, even by Kenyan standards. Most of this country's rural poor are able to grow some cash crops to get by. Here, the soil is not good and this year there was not enough rain to grow anything to sell. It makes life such a struggle. So of course everyone loves Barack Obama. He is a source of pride. And for many, a source of hope that by bringing attention to this part of Kenya, we will finally see some development."

Mama Sarah Obama, like most people in Kogelo, has patches for maize and other vegetables on her humble but picturesque property. Her son Said Obama – Barack's uncle –augments the family income as a mechanic at an industrial plant in Kisumu, 60 kilometres south.

Others in the village scrounge extra shillings to make ends meet however they can. One of the Obama's neighbours, Ndalu Lukadiya, 75, said she survives on her vegetable garden, and by weaving string from the fibres of a native plant for sale in the local market.

Those with younger legs pedal boda-boda – a Chinese-made bicycle with a heavily padded banana seat, which taxis people up and down the washboard roads around Kogelo for 15 cents a kilometre.

Lukadiya, who has known Mama Sarah all her life, describes the matriarch of the Obama household as a "free-hearted woman.

"Long before Barack Obama became famous, Mama Sarah was known for her hospitality. Her door was always open and whoever walked through it was invited to eat. She was always jovial, all the time," said Lukadiya.

"We believe that when you share what you have with visitors, they leave good luck behind. But with Sarah it is not about luck. She is just a very generous woman."

Said Obama, an articulate and thoughtful man of 41, also is emerging as the gatekeeper for the elderly Mama Sarah, who today finds herself subjected to a daily wave of journalists and curiosity-seekers who want to learn the back-story of the U.S. presidential hopeful.

"I don't mind the visitors. It is a thrill for me. I know people come here in good faith. I am still a strong woman," insists Mama Sarah.

Said interrupts: "We worry she is not as strong as she thinks she is. Soon she will be 86 and she still tends her garden. She works very hard. I think at some point we have start saying 'No, sorry.' Or at least to tell people to contact me so they don't burden Mama Sarah."
