They said Katelind Caudill was killed because she was trying to protect her best friend from being molested.

Authorities were searching for the friend's stepfather, Melvin Keeling, 43, who also is a suspect in the fatal shooting of two convenience store clerks in Indiana about four hours after Caudill's body was found.

"She was just trying to protect her friend. You're told to tell. She did the thing she was supposed to do by telling. This is where we are," said Debbie LeBlanc, a cousin.<

Katelind Caudill was killed early Monday at her grandmother’s home in this Cincinnati suburb. Authorities were searching for the friend’s stepfather, Melvin Keeling, 43, who also is a suspect in the killing of two convenience store clerks in Indiana about four hours after Katelind’s body was found.

Katelind’s father, Charles Caudill, told the Dayton Daily News that Keeling confronted Katelind on Saturday after she talked to police.
Keeling told the girl: “You took my family, and now I’m going to take yours,” the elder Caudill said. He said authorities were notified of the threat and “did nothing about it.”
Warren County sheriff’s officials said Katelind, a seventh-grader, became “involved” in a sex abuse investigation of Keeling less than two days before she was killed. They declined to give details except to say she was not the victim in the case and was a friend of Keeling’s oldest stepdaughter.

Warren County prosecutor Rachel Hutzel said arresting Keeling earlier would have been premature.

The bodies of Lisa Kendall, 29, and Kendora Furr, 38, were found Monday morning by a customer who went inside the store because the gasoline pump wasn’t working, Terry Risner, Jasper County’s chief deputy sheriff, said Tuesday.
Investigators found no witnesses, but a surveillance video at the convenience store showed a man, believed to be Keeling, in the store.

Traffic continued to buzz in and out of a busy interchange a day after two Jasper County women were murdered while working at the Family Express convenience store just two miles west of the White/Jasper county line.
Kendora Furr, 38, Remington, and Lisa Kendall, 29, Rensselaer, were fatally shot Monday morning while working at the Family Express gas station at the 201 exit of Interstate 65 on U.S. 24.
A manhunt is underway for identified suspect who turned out to be a killer nigger Melvin M. Keeling, 43, who police consider armed and dangerous.
The Family Express was still closed and cordoned off Tuesday with barricades and police tape, but across the highway, things were running as normal as possible for other businesses located along the busy corridor just outside Remington.

At Petro Shopping Center, a gas station and convenience store across from Family Express, business was pretty much back to normal, said store manager Darlene Sellers.
We're all pretty shaken up because most of us here knew the girls. It's hit us pretty hard, Sellers, an eight-year employee of the store, said.
She also noted that despite the heavy traffic flow her and other nearby stores handle, she doesn't typically feel unsafe in her work environment.
"I've worked just off the interstate off and on all my life. And I feel pretty safe. As hard as it is, we're just getting back to normal.

Michelle Burch, who was working at Petro yesterday while the shooting occurred, said the area was definitely a lingering aura of anxiety Tuesday.
"It's just nervousness, she said of the mood, because it could be any one of us.
Burch said she didn't realize what had happened at Family Express immediately Monday because she was busy attending to customers, but noted that a truck driver fueling up outside had called in saying something had happened.
"I saw officers running up, said Burch. "I just don't understand, especially if he had so many (criminal) counts, why was he out?
Keeling, according to police reports, is also wanted for two counts of rape and 24 counts of gross sexual imposition.
A clerk at the Pilot Travel Center, also in the same plaza as Remington's Petro and Family Express, identified only as Laurie due to Pilot corporate policy, said Tuesday her store was reeling from the news of Kendall and Furr's deaths.
Everybody is still in shock, she said. You know it can happen to you; in this kind of business you just have to be aware, alert of what's going on and of who's in the store. Pay attention, but that's all you can do.
In this case, she said, the pair of Family Express employees were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
They were really nice people, always happy and smiling even when they were having a bad day. I can't understand it. Right now, it's just unbelievable that someone out there could do that. What goes through their head?
Kendall and Furr were both mothers who leave behind children with Furr leaving daughters Denea, 17, Selena, 16, and Rheanna 11, and Kendall leaving two sons Connor, 7, and Jordan 10.
Family Express Corporation has established a fund at Centier Bank for the two families. Contributions to this fund should be made to Family Express Benefit Fund, 1951 Morthland Drive, Valparaiso, IN 46385 or Centier Bank, 150 Lincolnway, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
Family Express is also offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of suspects involved in this investigation.

9News has learned that a murder suspect who is the target in a multi-state manhunt left a note to his family saying he expects he won't be taken alive.

Melvin Keeling, 43, is wanted for three murders, including that of Katie Caudill, 13, of Deerfield Township.

9News has been told that police here in the Tri-state took that information as a sign Keeling won't surrender peacefully. They've passed it along to other law enforcement agencies so they are prepared for the worst.

Katie Caudill's family believes Keeling murdered the 13-year-old on Monday morning at her grandmother's home in


Deerfield Township because she was helping police with a sex abuse investigat
ion against him.

Police in Indiana have said that they found a "to do list" they think that Keeling wrote before the murders.

On it at least two notes -- get a gun and clothes.

But perhaps most telling, police believe he left a hand-written note to family which essentially said they wouldn't see him again alive.

Two slain clerks mourned in Ind.

Lisa Kendall was content working as a clerk at Family Express on U.S. 24 and Interstate 65 in the small town of Remington, Ind.

The 28-year-old single mom of two boys never met a stranger. She always seemed to be smiling, making her a natural to work with the public.

But about four hours after she started her 6 a.m. shift Monday, a customer apparently asked for a pack of cigarettes and then gunned down Kendall and one of her co-workers, Kendora Furr, 38, of Remington.

Authorities suspect that customer was Melvin Keeling, the subject of a national manhunt now for the double homicide - and the slaying hours earlier of 13-year-old Katelind Caudill in her Deerfield Township bedroom.

"Her dream was to see her boys graduate from high school, go to college, ge


t married and have babies of their own and
he took that away from her," said one of her sisters, Laura Spencer, 39, of Goodland, Ind. "He took that away from all of us. We hope they catch him before he can do any more damage."

Kendall lived at home with her father, Orville, 70; an older brother, Greg, 44, and her sons, Jordan, 10, and Connor, 7. She doted on her sons and often took them to the movies or to watch their father, Scott Minter, 30, race stock cars, her sister said.

"We were always together," Spencer said.

She began working at the Family Express about five years ago, her sister said. There she became good friends with Furr, the manager, who also left behind daughters: Denea, 17; Selena, 16 and Reana, 11.

Separate funeral services are scheduled Friday for both women. The store where they worked remained closed Wednesday and will not reopen until at least after the services.

"We take a lot of security precautions," said Mike Rasnak, the company's vice president of marketing, as he stood in front of an outdoor surveillance camera at the store. "You don't see it coming on a sunny Monday morning."

The double shooting has everyone in town questioning their safety, Spencer said.

"It's a shocker to this little community," she said. "We just never thought anything like this would happen in a small area. We all thought we were safe. We all thought we could leave our doors unlocked. I don't know if we can do that anymore because evidently you are not safe anywhere you live in the United States."

Amid funeral arrangements this week, Kendall's family has been talking regularly with authorities in Indiana and Warren County.

LEBANON, Ohio -- As mourners gathered to say goodbye to 13-year-old Katie Caudill, the FBI set up a $25,000 reward and released a new photo of the neighbor accused of killing her, News 5's John London reported.

A nationwide task force has been set up on the fourth day of the search for Melvin Keeling, London reported. The FBI and Warren County police said they had received 200 leads on his whereabouts since Monday. That's when Keeling went on a two-state killing spree that took three lives, police said.

Officials released a photo of Keeling from 11 years ago in case he tried to change his look.

Keeling may have left a handwritten note in his van telling relatives they would not see him again. Officials would not confirm that, but th


ey did say writings were taken from his van after it wa
s found in Gary, Ind., on Tuesday.

The latest information puts Keeling in the Gary or Chicago areas, police said, but he could be back in the Tri-State. Several people have reported seeing Keeling downtown and in Over-the-Rhine in the past three days.

Visitation for Katie will be held from 5 p.m to 9 p.m. Thursday at Victory Baptist Church, 3837 Elsmere Ave., in Norwood.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Victory Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mason.

Investigators said they believe Keeling shot Katie Monday because she was helping them in a child rape investigation against them. Katie's grandmother told News 5 that she had confronted Keeling about allegedly molesting his stepdaughter, who was Katie's best friend.

Keeling then threatened Katie, her father told News 5.

Keeling was confronted by a family friend 24 hours BEFORE the police were notified of the rape allegation, Keeling fled, and could not be found by police when they responded to the scene. Police responded and began their investigation immediately upon being notified of the allegations. Police were only a few hours into their rape investigation when the homicide occurred. There was no "tipoff" or "racism" or "Catholic" bias as you suggest.

Jeanna Keeling says suspect in killings 'very loving' person

CINCINNATI | As police in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois continued their manhunt for Melvin M. Keeling on Thursday, Keeling's ex-wife described the Warren County man suspected in three fatal shootings as a "mild-mannered, very loving" person who was "nothing but excellent" as a father to his three children.

Jeanna D. Keeling of Cincinnati said her ex-husband has been heading for trouble since their divorce in 2000 (they married in 1984, she said), but she saw no warning signs of the violence that occurred Monday about 6:45 a.m. in Deerfield Twp., southern Warren County.

Police believe that's when Keeling shot and killed Katelind Caudill, a 13-year-old neighbor who accused him of sexually abusing another child. Her grandmother found the teenager on the flo


or of her bedroom, police said.

Keeling then fled to no
rthwest Indiana where he killed convenience store workers Lisa Kendall, 28, of Rensselaer, Ind., and Kendora Furr, 38, of Remington, Ind., about 10 a.m. Monday during an attempted robbery, police said. Their bodies were found behind a counter in the store off Interstate 69.

"The only thing I can tell you is, Melvin was --is --a wonderful father and he loves his children," Jeanna Keeling said Thursday afternoon. "This is in no kind of way usual behavior."

With leads to Keeling's whereabouts dwindling, authorities turned to the media for help. FBI and local police shared

photos and other information about Keeling, 43, a kung fu expert and assembler at the Ford Motor Co. plant in Sharonville, north of Cincinnati. They also warned people to not approach him.

"This is a very dangerous individual," Special Agent Stanley Borgia told reporters in Lebanon.

he's not coming back." Borgia declined to verify the presence of a suicide note.

The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to Keeling's arrest or location, bringing to $35,000 the bounty offered. Family Express, the company for whom the two women worked, put up $10,000 after surveillance video led authorities to suspect Keeling killed them.

Warren County Sheriff Tom Ariss said his office would be working with representatives of the TV program America's Most Wanted on a segment featuring the search for Keeling to be broadcast Saturday night.

Ariss said he has assigned all nine of his detectives to the case that began Saturday as a child molestation investigation of complaints against Keeling. Katelind Caudill was a witness in that case.

Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel said police and county children's services workers provided protection for three children as part of an "appropriate" safety plan. Authorities declined to provide details of that protection.

Caudill's father, Charles, has said Keeling confronted his daughter on Sept. 17 and threatened her. Other family members disputed that Wednesday, noting that they did not believe it happened, were not worried about Keeling and did not tell sheriff's deputies they were concerned about their safety.

Family members called the sheriff's office on Sept. 17 and again the next day and did n

Borgia has confirmed that Keeling bought a Glock pistol at a pawn shop.

On Monday after the shootings, police searched his house and confiscated 23 rounds of .40- and .223-caliber ammunition, according to court records.

Those same records indicated that Keeling never showed up on Monday for his 7 a.m. shift at Ford.

On Monday afternoon, hours after the shootings, Keeling was charged with two counts of rape and 24 counts of gross sexual imposition, while authorities began the search for him. Investigators have

On Wednesday, a Mason Municipal Court judge ordered the eviction of Keeling and his girlfriend from their home, direc

The eviction completed a legal action Keeling's landlord brought in July, according to court records. Keeling appeared in August to contest the eviction, but did not object to the magistrate's decision.

Caudill's grandmother had run an extension cord across their yards to provide electricity to Keeling's home once the utilities had been cut off, according to court records.

Jeanna Keeling said her ex-husband has had mounting problems since he moved out of their marital home at least a year before the divorce.

"It's a different situation over there (where Keeling lived with his girlfriend) --some real characters," she said. "U

Even though they have been parted for years, Jeanna Keeling said she's worried about what may happen.

"I don't want anybody else to get hurt, and I definitely don't want Melvin to get hurt," she said. "I wo

Keeling was divorced from his wife and living with a girlfriend. The girlfriend's daughter was Katelind's best friend. Do we know yet if Keeling's girlfriend was black or white ? Was Katelin's best friend black or white ? Katelin's mistake may have been associating with a white girl whose mother was a race-traitor.
