More Than 20 Children Killed By Firearms In Philadelphia In 2020, Almost Double Compared To Last Year
By Matt Petrillo
December 4, 2020 at 5:55 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The community is mourning the loss of another young life as a 14-year-old boy is gunned down in Philadelphia’s Olney neighborhood. The search is now on to find the gunman as city leaders search for the answers to the violence.

Eyewitness News has discovered a troubling trend involving gun violence and children in Philadelphia.

More than 20 juveniles lost their lives to firearms in Philadelphia this year alone. That’s almost double compared to last year.

Crime scene tape is left behind after the teen boy was shot in his chest and back on the 5900 block of Mascher Street in Olney on Thursday night.

Neighbors are outraged over another deadly shooting involving a child.

“Fourteen. He got his whole life ahead of him and he’s gone,” Greg Stroud said.

Data obtained by Eyewitness News shows 23 victims ages 17 and under were killed by gunfire in Philadelphia so far this year. That’s up from 12 children killed by guns during the same time last year.

“There are certainly reasons to expect rates of youth violence to be higher this year,” said Dr. Caitlin Taylor, an assistant professor of criminal justice and sociology at LaSalle University.

Taylor points out the legal system is not as good as preventing crime as schools, community centers and other types of so-called “informal social controls.” But those are now closed or scaled back because of the pandemic.

“Even just influential older folks that live in the neighborhood, who normally have lots of interactions with at-risk youth, don’t have those same types of interactions because of the global pandemic we’re continuing to suffer from,” Taylor said.

Neighbors in Olney are fed up with the gun violence.

“Put the guns down. Put the guns down, please,” Stroud said. “But it’s almost like it’s fallen on deaf ears.”

Police have not yet released a description of the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives.

Biggest Philadelphia Crime Stories Of 2020: Gun Violence, Looting, & Fatal Police Shooting Of Walter Wallace Jr.
By CBS3 Staff
December 22, 2020 at 2:26 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, 2020 saw a rise in violent crimes across Philadelphia. From the ballooning homicide rate and the number of children killed by gun violence to the looting stemming from the George Floyd and Walter Wallace Jr. protests and police accused of assaulting protesters, these are some of the biggest crime stories of the year — solved and unsolved.

FATAL POLICE SHOOTING OF WALTER WALLACE JR.

Walter Wallace Jr., 27, was shot 14 times and killed by Philadelphia Police Officers Sean Matarazzo and Thomas Munz after, police say, Wallace walked towards them while holding a knife and refused to drop it. Wallace’s family say he was suffering from a mental health crisis when he was killed. Bodycam footage shows Wallace Jr. continue to walk around the area before both officers open fire, killing him. In the video, one of the officers can be heard saying “shoot him” before both officers opened fire. Wallace’s death sparked outrage and nights of looting and protests throughout Philadelphia. The officers have not been charged.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, officials released bodycam footage moments before an unarmed  black man, 28-year-old Maurice Gordon, was shot and killed by a New Jersey state trooper during a fight on the Garden State Expressway.

LOOTING DURING GEORGE FLOYD PROTESTS

The nationwide protests following the fatal police shooting of George Floyd in Minneapolis made its way to Philadelphia. While most of the protests were peaceful, some did become violent. Cop cars were set on fire, protesters and cops fought, looting took place across the city, and several ATMs were vandalized. One ShopRite store in West Philadelphia was looted for 15 consecutive hours. The National Guard was deployed to the city and Philadelphia issued a curfew for several nights.

POLICE OFFICERS CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING PROTESTERS

Some Philadelphia police officers were charged with using excessive force against Saint George Floyd protesters over the summer. Philadelphia SWAT Officer Richard Nicoletti was charged for a pepper-spraying incident that made national headlines. Nicoletti could be seen pepper-spraying peaceful protesters on I-676. The video also showed him pulling down the mask of a woman, spraying her in the face and dousing two others with pepper spray. Philadelphia Police Staff Inspector Joseph Bologna was charged after striking 21-year-old Temple University student Evan Gorski with a baton and arresting him during protests near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Center City. And former SEPTA Police Sgt. Matthew Sinkiewicz was charged after being accused of hitting two protesters with his baton. :pity:

PHILADELPHIA POLICE SGT. JAMES O’CONNOR KILLED IN LINE OF DUTY

Philadelphia Police Sgt. James O’Connor, 46, was shot and killed in the Frankford section of the city in March while serving a warrant. The warrant was being served to 21-year-old Hassan Elliott for a robbery and murder that happened in March 2019. The 22-year-old Elliott is accused of firing the gun that killed O’Connor. Elliott has been charged with murder and is facing the death penalty. Three others are also facing charges. O’Connor was survived by his wife and two children.

PHILADELPHIA’S BALLOONING HOMICIDE RATE

The deadly COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t quelled the city’s homicide rate. As of Dec. 18, Philadelphia has seen a 39% increase in murders (476) compared to all of 2019 (356). The number of homicides so far this year is higher than any year since 1990, which had 500 homicides.

Meanwhile, in nearby Montgomery County, 18-year-old Morgan McCaffery was fatally stabbed during a domestic incident at the Meadowbrook SEPTA station in July. Gilbert Newton III, 18, of Philadelphia, was charged in the murder. Officials say an investigation revealed that the McCaffrey had broken off a yearlong relationship with Newton a month prior and she had gone to the train station to meet him to discuss their relationship.

MORE THAN 20 CHILDREN KILLED BY GUN VIOLENCE IN PHILADELPHIA

More than 20 juveniles lost their lives to firearms in Philadelphia this year alone, almost double compared to last year. Data obtained by Eyewitness News shows 23 victims ages 17 and under were killed by gunfire in Philadelphia so far in 2020. That’s up from 12 children killed by guns during the same time last year. More than 100 children under the age of 18 have been shot in the city so far this year.

Notable gun violence against children include:

A 14-year-old boy who was shot twice and killed in Olney earlier in December.
12-year-old Sadeek Clark-Harrison was shot in the face and killed while answering the door of his Frankford home in November.

The Philadelphia community also mourned an act of violence against 2-year-old King Hill, who was allegedly killed by his babysitter 24-year-old Tianna Park. Police say King’s stepfather, Marvin Reese, put the toddler in Parks’ care. Officers arrested Parks after the investigation uncovered cell phone video confirming the child was killed. Parks now faces numerous charges, including murder and abuse of corpse.

DA: MONTGOMERY COUNTY TODDLER DIES AFTER BEING RAPED BY FATHER

It was a disturbing case that came out of Lower Providence Township. Officials say 10-month-old Zara Scruggs died after she was raped and beaten by her father, 29-year-old Austin Stevens. He has been charged with first-degree murder, rape of a child, aggravated assault, and other related charges.

WOMAN LEFT BLIND AFTER UNPROVOKED CHEMICAL ATTACK

A 61-year-old woman was left blind following an unprovoked attack when a man threw a mixture of dangerous chemicals in her face. The attack happened in October in the Germantown section of the city shortly after Helen Jones left her home. The attack left her with burns to her lips, tongue and eyes. Family members told Eyewitness News the potent mixture included Draino and it burned through Jones’ skin, leaving her blind. Police are still searching for the suspect.

SESAME PLACE EMPLOYEE ASSAULTED FOR ASKING COUPLE TO WEAR MASK

A Sesame Place employee was attacked trying to get a couple to do the right thing during a pandemic. A New York couple was charged in the violent attack of a 17-year-old employee at the Sesame Place amusement park in Langhorne in July. Investigators say 39-year-old Troy McCoy and 31-year-old Shakerra Bonds attacked the teen after he reminded them to wear a mask. The victim spent a week in the hospital recovering from surgery to his fractured jaw and damage to his teeth.

FORMER TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FRATERNITY PRESIDENT SENTENCED

The former president of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity at Temple University has been sentenced to 3½-to-seven years in state prison for the attempted sexual assault of a female student in his bedroom during a frat house party. Ari Goldstein, 23, was convicted in February of attempted involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, attempted sexual assault and indecent assault of a woman who was a freshman at Temple in February 2018. But jurors also acquitted the Wrightstown resident of sexual assault and indecent assault of another woman in the fraternity house in November 2017.

City Of Philadelphia On Track To Break Record Number Of Homicides In Calendar Year
By Howard Monroe
December 29, 2020 at 7:41 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A violent night pushes Philadelphia closer to reaching a grim milestone. The city could be on track to surpass the most homicides ever in a calendar year.

The record is 504 homicides which was set in 1990 and with three days left to go in this year the city is has had at least 490.

There were two homicides Monday night.

The first happened at 10:30 near the intersection of Cleveland and York Streets in North Philadelphia. Police say a 43-year-old man was visiting his family when he was shot.

They say it’s not clear who shot him or what the motive was.

The man was shot at least 12 times and was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Then about 30 minutes later near the intersection of Rising Sun Avenue and Rosalie Street in Lawncrest a 24-year-old woman was shot and killed.

Police say she was involved in an argument when a man pulled a gun on her. She was shot at least 8 times.

Police say the shooting was captured on the city’s Real-Time crime cameras and other private cameras.

“You could clearly see that this female was involved in an argument that turned into a physical altercation, with at least one other female and a male. A few minutes later another male emerged and stood very close to the victim, pointed a gun at her head/face area and fired multiple shots,” Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.

No one has been arrested in either of these shootings.

With More Than 490 Homicides, Philadelphia Nearing Most Homicides Ever In Calendar Year
By Matt Petrillo
December 29, 2020 at 6:27 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia could be on track to surpass its most homicides ever in a calendar year. All year we’ve been watching the homicide rate go up and up. It’s stretching police resources thin as the pain of losing loved ones devastates families from across the city.

Family members fought through tears when remembering 15-year-old Jeremy Perez of Kensington. Loved ones say he was taken from them too soon.

“He was a good kid. He died innocently,” said Martha Rivera, the victim’s aunt.

Philadelphia police say a fight broke out Friday over a parking spot in Kensington and Jeremy’s father shot a gun into a crowd, killing Jeremy and injuring the teen’s cousin.

“I don’t really remember a lot, I just remember being in the hospital,” gunshot victim Giovanny Capulin said.

Loved ones released balloons into the sky Tuesday afternoon in honor of the 15-year-old and his father, Jesus Perez, who officers shot and killed during the chaos.

The balloon release is a tragic reminder of the surging homicide rate in Philadelphia that’s sadly been keeping detectives busy this year.

Philadelphia has seen more than 490 homicides to date, just shy of a new record. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, that record stands at 500 homicides, set back in 1990.

“Crime and violence are really complex problems,” Dr. Caitlin Taylor.

Dr. Taylor is an assistant professor of criminal justice at La Salle University. She and her colleagues initially expected the pandemic to decrease crime because more people are staying home. But some factors have turned that theory on its head.

“Especially in Philadelphia, homicides are really a story of gun violence more than anything else and we saw rates of gun ownership increase this year. We cannot talk about homicide without talking about the unfathomable easy access to firearms among young people,” Dr. Taylor said.

More Than 2,000 People Shot In Philadelphia In 2020 As City Approaches Record Number Of Homicides
By Alecia Reid
December 30, 2020 at 5:21 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The murder rate was extremely high in Philadelphia in 2020. The number of homicides is on track to break a grim record by New Year’s Eve.

There’s been a 40% increase in homicides from last year alone, and now the city is close to officially breaking the record of 500 homicides set back in 1990.

Illegal guns continue to wreak havoc on the streets of Philadelphia.

“It’s never right to bury your children but this is the reality for too many families,” said Michelle Kerr Spry with Mothers in Charge.

More than 2,000 people were shot in the city this year — an alarming number of them were women and children. The majority, however, were young black men and boys.

“We’ve been doing this for 17 years and this year has been one of the worst years,” said Dr. Dorothy Johnson-Speight with Mothers in Charge.

Mothers in Charge continues to work with families affected by gun violence.

“It’s not healthy right now. It’s not healthy for any of us. So how do we get folks involved that can make a difference? That’s who we need to reach out to now,” Johnson-Speight said.

As families learn to navigate a world they never imagined, Spry says there needs to be an effort from all fronts.

“More programs to address their hurt, anger, and sense of not feeling safe,” she said.

Mayor Jim "Banana Nose" Kenney says no one should live that way.

In a statement he says, “We are determined to save lives and create peace. We will turn the page on this dark chapter in the history of our city, and we will write the new book together. I vow to be with Philadelphians every step of the way as we take on this challenge.”

Councilman and chairman of the City Council Special Committee on Gun Violence Prevention Kenyatta Johnson plans to meet with the mayor in the new year to look at a comprehensive strategy.

“We have to re-examine these strategies and figure out what’s not working and also look at what’s working, and invest in those areas that are working,” Johnson said.

Different organizations across the city are working towards the same goal.

Tomorrow at noon, Mothers in Charge will be holding a virtual prayer for peace, and for all the families that have been impacted by gun violence.

Deadly Start To New Year As Man Shot, Killed In South Philadelphia
By CBS3 Staff
January 1, 2021 at 9:38 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – After nearly 500 homicides in Philly in 2020, the earliest hours of 2021 saw a flurry of gunfire, including the first homicide of the year on the 100 block of West Ritner Street around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Police say a 37-year-old man was shot once in the thigh.

The man was taken to Jefferson Hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m.

2020 saw more than 2,000 people shot, including a surge in women and children as city leaders continue to try and figure it out.

“We need to re-examine and see what’s working and invest in what’s working :headbash:,” Councilman Kenyatta Johnson said.

So far, no word on the motive for the shooting.

Police have not made any arrests.

Violent Start To 2021 In Philadelphia After Nearly 500 People Murdered In 2020
By Kimberly Davis
January 1, 2021 at 6:11 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s been a violent start to 2021 in the City of Philadelphia. Three people were shot and killed overnight, on top of the nearly 500 people who were murdered in 2020.

2020 was filled with pain for much of the country, but especially for 498 families in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. And for those families, Philadelphia did not live up to its nickname.

That’s how many lives were lost due to violence.

It even left one mother afraid to let her children play outside after 7-year-old Zamar Jones was shot and killed on his own front porch back in August.

“She’s scared to even come around here to play with her friends. She said she doesn’t want any more of her friends to die. So how do you think that makes me feel as a mom hearing that from an 8-year-old?” the mother said.

It’s a new year, but sadly Philadelphia’s off to a similar start.

According to police, three people were shot and killed early on New Year’s Day, starting with the shooting of a 37-year-old man in South Philadelphia just minutes after midnight.

In Rittenhouse Square, a young woman was shot twice inside of a Walnut Street apartment building.

In a letter to the city, Mayor Jim "Banana Nose" Kenney addressed the gun violence on New Year’s Eve.

It reads, in part: “The majority of the lives lost to violence were taken by gunfire, and more than 2,000 people were shot overall. An alarming number of shooting victims were women and children, and those who survived were left with life-changing trauma and medical issues that create additional barriers to a full recovery.”

In a year of financial cuts and layoffs, the mayor says his office is pulling in resources to reduce the city’s gun violence.

A spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department declined to comment on the city’s gun violence.

Violent Night In Philadelphia Leaves At Least 2 Dead, Including 17-Year-Old Boy
By Howard Monroe
January 19, 2021 at 6:03 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A violent night in Philadelphia leaves at least two people dead, including a driver who was gunned down while sitting at a traffic light. Including these two homicides, Philadelphia has recorded at least 17 homicides for the year, which is down compared to last year.

Among the victims was a 17-year-old boy. Chopper 3 was overhead where he was shot and killed on Jefferson Street. The homicide happened in North Philly just after 9 p.m. Monday. Police say he was shot in the face and found in a breezeway between two buildings. Police say two separate guns were used. At least 16 shots were fired.

Police say the boy lived four blocks from where he was killed.

“We don’t have a description, nor do we have a motive for that shooting,” Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.

Just before 9 p.m, police were called to the intersection of Broad and Packer Streets in South Philly. When they got there, they found a 29-year-old man slumped over in the driver seat of a blue Honda sedan. After the shooting, the man tried to drive away but hit a telephone pole. At least 16 shots were fired into the vehicle. The man was hit multiple times. Police say a person in a red car jumped out of the back seat and shot the man. The victim lived in South Philly but several miles from where the shooting happened.

No one has been arrested in either of these homicides and no weapons have been recovered.

Three People Shot, Killed During Violent Night In Philadelphia
By Jan Carabeo
January 21, 2021 at 11:35 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are once again busy investigating shootings that left at least three people dead by late Wednesday night. The gun violence unfolded in neighborhoods across the city of Philadelphia.

The violence started just after 6:30 p.m. A 52-year-old woman identified as Gladys Coriano was shot in the head.

Her body was found slumped in the driver’s seat of her SUV, engine still running, just outside of her home on the 900 block of Hartel Avenue in Fox Chase.

“According to witnesses, a vehicle pulled up eastbound on Hartel and pulled up right next to her vehicle and then the shooter was seen reaching his arm out of the driver door window and firing shots from a very close range into the victim’s vehicle,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The gunman shot at least eight times.

That woman died at the hospital hours later.

In West Philadelphia, around 9:30 p.m., police found a 22-year-old man lying on the sidewalk of the 200 block of North Felton Street.

He had been shot multiple times. Police found at least nine spent shell casings near his body.

That man died at the hospital.

So did a 26-year-old man who police say was shot in the head and chest in North Philadelphia. That gunfire erupted around 11 p.m. at 25th and Gordon Streets.

“We know seven shots were fired from a semi-automatic gun. All seven of the shell casings were feet away from where the victim was laying on the sidewalk,” Small said. “So, it appears the shooter was standing very close to this 26-year-old victim.”

The motive for all three attacks remains unclear and no arrests have been made.

Officers were responding to another call in the area when they heard the shots ring out and called it in over the radio.

So far, no arrests have been made.

This comes just hours after two men were found shot to death in Kensington.

There have been at least seven murders in the city Monday.

“It’s very brazen. We had officers, whether it’s from SEPTA, were out here. We were able to get someone in custody as quickly as we did because we had officers in the area working on another assignment,” Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. “So it’s not for our lack of presence out here, but I think it’s very telling that folks that are willing to engage in these shootings are becoming more and more emboldened, regardless or not if they see us out here.”

A person was taken into custody following a foot chase by police but their involvement in the shooting is not known at this time. Two firearms were recovered.

Police are asking any witnesses to share any information.

“This is happening far too often, this happened in broad daylight and we need everyone to come together to help us solve these cases,” Outlaw said.

Philadelphia Police Investigating After Two Burned Bodies Found In Different Parts Of City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia Police are investigating the discovery of two bodies overnight, both were set on fire. One of the bodies was found at Frankford Avenue and Bellmore Street in Kensington. The other was on Wolford Drive in Strawberry Mansion.

“The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. “I was told the flames were about eight to 10 feet above the vehicle.”

A charred sidewalk is all that remains following a deadly overnight car fire. Police were called to Frankford Avenue and Bellmore Street in Kensington just after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

When they got there, they found a Cadillac sedan on fire. When the fire was extinguished, they noticed a person was dead in the driver’s seat.

“The body is burnt beyond recognition. You can’t tell if it’s a male or female,” Small said. “You cannot tell the age.”

Police also say the license plate was taken off the vehicle, but the VIN number revealed the car was registered to an address two miles away.

Police have not disclosed that address, and the victim has not been identified.

Five hours and less than five miles away on the other side of the city, another body was found in Fairmount Park. Police were called to Woodford and Strawberry Mansion Drives in Fairmount Park at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. The caller thought it was a brush fire, but when police got there, they found a naked woman on fire. She has not been identified and no one has been arrested.

The fire marshal is investigating both of these incidents.

Philadelphia Police haven’t said if they are linked.
