PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Over the weekend, nearly two dozen people were shot in Philadelphia and two of those victims were children. Police say one of 22 people who were shot between Saturday and Sunday died.

The two children are listed in stable condition.

One child suffered a graze wound to the back in a triple shooting on the 1500 block of Napa Street in the city’s Gray’s Ferry neighborhood Sunday night.

He was transported to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where he is recovering.

Another child was shot on Saturday night in Olney. Police say the 11-year-old was walking down the 6000 block of A Street, near the Olney Recreation Center.

He suffered graze wounds to the shoulder and back of his head. The boy was transported to Saint Christopher’s Hospital in stable condition.

As of midnight Monday, Philadelphia has had 256 homicides in 2020.

That is up 29% over this time last year.

Another Violent Night In Philadelphia Leaving Behind ‘Tsunami Of Pain,’ Turning Neighborhoods ‘Into Cemeteries’
By Alecia Reid
August 15, 2020 at 6:22 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — After yet another violent night in Philadelphia, activists tried to appeal to the community to turn in guns — no questions asked — to get them off the street.

It’s been a violent couple of days in Philadelphia, leaving one teen dead and sending a number of victims to the hospital. There have been 14 shootings and one stabbing in less than 24 hours.

On Friday night, just before 9:30 p.m., shots rang out on the 2200 block West Harold Street on the highway, striking a 17-year-old boy once in the chest. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but was pronounced soon after.

“We need to stop what’s happening,” Chantay Love, with Emir Healing Center, said. “The tsunami of pain, the tsunami of violence, this bloodshed that’s happening. Because our neighborhoods have now turned into cemeteries.”

That was one of two shootings Friday night. An 18-year-old man was shot nine times. He’s still listed in critical condition.

By 1:15 a.m. Saturday in Kensington at the intersection of Jasper and Westmoreland Streets, a 41-year-old man was shot four times in the left leg and twice in the right leg.

Within an hour on the 100 block of Lippincott Street, a 28-year-old man was shot once in the back.

By daylight at North 9th Street and West Sedgley Avenue, a double shooting occurred, leaving a 22-year-old woman shot once in the right shoulder and three times in the left leg. The second victim, a 32-year-old woman, was shot once in the left arm.

This afternoon, a 19-year-old man was shot in the lower left leg. A private vehicle transported him to the hospital but left before the police arrived. Police say the victim is not being cooperative.

In an effort to get guns off the streets, there were two gun turn-in events in the city on Saturday.

People could safely dispose of their firearms at Jane Memorial United Methodist Church and Tasker Street Missionary Baptist Church with no questions asked.

“Since we had 103 children shot so far this year so we would be very happy to getting any gun off the streets today,” Bilal Qayyjm, with Father’s Day Rally Committee, said.

The gun turn-in was aiming for at least a dozen guns on Saturday. They received a total of 47.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — After yet another violent start to the weekend in Philadelphia, activists tried to appeal to the community to turn in guns to get them off the street, no questions asked, while community leaders in one neighborhood rallied for change.

After a night of rampant shootings in the city, leaving a teenager dead, neighbors came out Saturday in an effort to take back their streets.

Community stakeholders knocked on doors and offered support after a 28-year-old man was shot in the stomach while on the front porch.

“It needs to step, it needs to stop,” one woman said. “For the past five nights, there have been shootings in this perimeter.”

It’s not just 59th and Master Streets.

Between Friday and Saturday nights, 18 people were shot and one woman was stabbed. Two people were killed, including a teenager.

“We need to stop what’s happening,” Chantay Love, with Emir Healing Center, said. “The tsunami of pain, the tsunami of violence, this bloodshed that’s happening. Because our neighborhoods have now turned into cemeteries.”

On Friday night, just before 9:30 p.m., shots rang out on the 2200 block West Harold Street on the highway, striking a 17-year-old boy once in the chest. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but was pronounced soon after.

This afternoon, a 19-year-old man was shot in the lower left leg. A private vehicle transported him to the hospital but left before the police arrived. Police say the victim is not being cooperative.

Losing loved ones to gun violence is a pain shared by far too many Philadelphians.

“I lost my son to violence. He got shot 26 teams,” one woman said.

Community group City of Dreams teamed up with rapper Beanie Sigel to create a music development program where young adults will get paid to learn about their culture through a social music network.

“We’re trying to build more recreation centers, more studios because we know out here, everybody loves music,” he said.

More than 40 guns were collected at Saturday’s gun turn-in events, including 33 handguns and 10 long guns.

Another Violent Weekend Continues To Shine Light On Philadelphia’s Gun Violence Crisis
By Howard Monroe
August 16, 2020 at 6:30 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Another violent weekend in Philadelphia is signaling a gun violence crisis in the city. The tally of gunshot victims is rising quickly. Since midnight Saturday, at least 12 people have been shot, two of them killed. All told this weekend, at least 29 people have been shot. Police say five of those who were gunned down were attending a block party in North Philly.

“It’s just a shame. It’s a shame that that happened,” a Philadelphia resident said.

Nervous neighbors are reacting to the state of their neighborhood.

Mounds of trash were left behind at 10th and Brown Streets. That is were five people, including a 16-year-old boy, were shot around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

“It was a sight,” a resident said. “I never seen nothing like that in my life.”

Police responded to what they called a block party going on with as many as 200 people when several men started firing at police. No officers were injured or discharged their weapons.

Neighbors say the group of hundreds of people was memorializing a man who was shot a few years ago.

They say the crowd was mostly peaceful until a group on motorcycles rode by and shot into the crowd.

“With no regards,” a resident said. “I don’t understand it. I really don’t. I don’t understand how somebody can be that heartless and shoot into a crowd of people like that.”

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw believes someone could step up and identify the shooters.

“There were a lot of people out here,” Outlaw said. “We do believe that someone knows who the shooters were and could possibly help us in identifying, figuring out exactly what happened.”

Among the victims in the North Philadelphia shooting, is a 16-year-old boy. Police say the other victims include three men — 18 years old, 21 years old and 26 years old — and a 19-year-old woman.

All the victims were shot in the lower body and are expected to recover.

Investigators found 29 AR-15 rounds and 10 40 caliber rounds at the scene. A magazine was recovered from one of the shooting victims.

It’s important to note that while these block parties are happening more frequently in the city, they’re currently not permitted by officials because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

This wasn’t the only overnight shooting.

A 40-year-old man was shot once in the chest and killed Sunday morning on the 4700 block of Lansing Street just before 5 a.m. in the city’s Holmesburg neighborhood. Police say the call came in as a burglary.

Another man was fatally shot on the 5000 block of Merion Avenue in Parkside. The victim was shot 10 times throughout the body around 3:30 a.m.

He was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Two men are in critical condition following two separate shootings across the city.

One is a 24-year-old man who was shot once in the back and abdomen on the 2700 block of Judson Street just at 6:26 a.m. The other is a 23-year-old man who was shot twice on the 6100 block of Lansdowne Avenue just after 2:04 a.m.

Two additional men are in stable condition after suffering gunshot wounds during the overnight hours Sunday.

A 35-year-old man was shot once in the upper back and suffered a graze wound to his bicep near 56th Street and Willows Avenue at 5:15 a.m. And a 27-year-old was shot in the hand at Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue at 4:21 a.m. and transported to a local medical center in stable condition.

No arrests have been made in any of the overnight shooting incidents.

The shootings happened hours after the city held a gun give-back program.

“We’re in a race to save life,” EMIR Healing Center representative Chantay Love said.

A total of 43 guns were turned in on Saturday, including 33 handguns, 10 long guns — one being a sawed-off shotgun.

“Our neighborhoods have turned into cemeteries and we’re trying to turn it back into neighborhoods,” Love said.

7 Dead, 25 Hurt in 25 Shootings During Another Violent Weekend in Philadelphia
By David Chang and Steven Fisher • Published 5 hours ago • Updated 19 mins ago

At least seven people were killed and 25 hurt in 25 separate shootings during another weekend of violence in Philadelphia.

The most recent shooting occurred around 8:05 p.m. Sunday on the 2700 block of Winton Terrace. A 19-year-old man was shot four times in the left leg, a 20-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the ear and a 20-year-old man was shot once in the back.

All three victims are in stable condition.

Around the same time at 7:59 p.m., a man in his 20's was shot once in the neck and once in the shoulders on the 4300 block of Chestnut Street. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition.

Earlier in the day, at 3:47 p.m. on 55th and Vine streets, a man in his 30's was shot twice in the back and once in the left arm by gunmen inside a Burgundy vehicle. The victim was taken to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead at 5:12 p.m.

Another shooting occurred Sunday around 11:45 a.m. on the 200 block of East Clearfield Street. A 22-year-old man was shot twice in the chest area and once in the shoulder. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:56 a.m.

At 11:24 a.m., another 22-year-old man was shot four times in a home on South 49th Street. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m.

Earlier in the day, at 4:52 a.m., a 40-year-old man who was inside a vehicle on the 4700 block of Lansing Street was shot once in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5 a.m.

Around 3:30 a.m., a man who was on the 5000 block of Merion Street was shot ten times throughout his body. He was taken to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:40 a.m.

Four additional shootings with four victims who all survived also occurred Sunday morning.

Sunday’s 11 shootings followed a violent Saturday in which 16 people were injured and another killed in 12 separate shootings.

Saturday’s violence included a mass shooting at a large gathering. Around 11:30 p.m., Philadelphia police responded to the 700 block of North 10th Street for a report of a person with a gun. When they arrived they found a crowd of more than 200 people. Investigators said gunmen then began firing at the officers.

An 18-year-old man, 21-year-old man, 26-year-old man, 16-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman were all shot during the incident. All five victims survived. None of the officers were hurt.

Finally, Friday night, two separate shootings occurred including one on the 2200 block of West Harold Street in which a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed.

It was yet another violent weekend for Philadelphia plagued by the highest number of homicides the city has seen up to this point in more than 13 years.

Deputy Managing Director Vanessa Garrett Harley, the city’s top official for violence prevention, and Temple University gun policy researcher Jason Gravel told NBC10 that they believe the COVID-19 pandemic could be compounding a gun violence epidemic that has been getting worse in recent years.

Reverend Mark Kelly Tyler, pastor of Mother Bethel AME and a member of the Power to Live Free campaign, which addresses gun violence, told NBC10 resources should be invested back into the communities that struggle the most with violence.

"If we go block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood and develop a unique plan and find the credible messengers in those communities, in every community there is somebody who can stop the violence in that community," he said.

Reverend Tyler referred to those individuals as "violence interrupters." He believes the city's gun violence can and will be curbed if the city creates paid positions with adequate training for them.

"Persons whose only job when they wake up and go to bed is to make sure this community is safe ," Reverend Tyler said. "When they hear of an impending beef between two groups they are there to intervene and to try to point people into a different direction."

Another Violent Weekend Continues To Shine Light On Philadelphia’s Gun Violence Crisis
By CBS3 Staff
August 16, 2020 at 11:05 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Another weekend in Philadelphia saw a shocking spree of violence with dozens of people shot. The numbers are staggering with neighborhoods all over the city rocked by the violence. At least 35 people have been shot at 32 different scenes this weekend. There are three known homicides.

“Please put the guns down, man, stop the violence,” one Philadelphia man said.

On Sunday night, investigators were on the scene of a triple shooting in West Passyunk, where police say one 19-year-old man was struck four times. All three victims are in stable condition.

“I wish they never created guns because at the end of the day, people who use guns are monsters, man,” a man said.

The carnage continues throughout the city. Just after 5 p.m. Sunday, three gunshots killed a man in his 30s at 55th and Vine Streets in West Philadelphia. Police say the shooters were in a burgundy Sedan.

“It’s just a shame. It’s a shame that that happened,” a Philadelphia resident said.

Nervous neighbors reacted to the state of their neighborhood.

Mounds of trash were left behind at 10th and Brown Streets. That is were five people, including a 16-year-old boy, were shot around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say the other victims include three men — 18 years old, 21 years old and 26 years old — and a 19-year-old woman.

Almost too many incidents to recite — at least 35 shooting victims and 32 shooting scenes and three stabbings. This epidemic showing zero signs of slowing as homicides in Philadelphia are up 27% in 2020, according to city statistics.

“It’s disturbing, it’s disheartening. Again, the pandemic has not been canceled,” Outlaw said. “You know, there’s a lot of things that bring us pause and concern. But again, day in and day out we will be here.”

And it’s not just the amount of homicides, but also the number of gunshot victims that are spiking in the city. The number of gunshot victims is up 55% this year from a year ago.

5 Killed, 2 Injured In Another Violent Night In Philadelphia
By Dan Koob
August 21, 2020 at 6:28 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The number of people killed by gun violence continues to skyrocket in Philadelphia. Overnight, police reported five more homicides.

Police say a 29-year-old and a 50-year old man were shot at a gas station on the 6200 block of North Broad Street, late Thursday night. According to police, the 29-year-old sustained multiple wounds in his head, neck and back, and he did have a weapon on him.

“Based on ballistic evidence, we know at least 28 shots were fired from three separate caliber semi-automatic guns,” Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.

The gun violence continued on the 6200 block of Market Street, where a 26-year-old was shot in the back and pronounced dead as a part of a double shooting.

All of this going on while Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw marched with community members in North Philly, pleading for the plague of gun violence to cease.

“I can’t imagine what it would be like to live with a head on a swivel, everywhere I go. I don’t want that for y’all,” Outlaw said.

“I appreciate her coming around putting her face in our community and letting us know she cares about our community,” community activist Neil Jones said.

Just earlier this week the commissioner called for stricter gun laws in the state to help her department clean up the streets.

Homicides are up 32% in the city.

“These are the very folks that we are trying to reach. And the only way to find out the answer to the questions that we have is to go out and ask them,” Outlaw said.

Already this year, 283 people have been shot and killed.

West Philadelphia Residents Fighting Gun Violence After Father Gunned Down In Front Of His Young Children
By Alecia Reid
August 21, 2020 at 5:21 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Another violent night in Philadelphia has police seeking answers. The violence added five murders to the city’s record-breaking tally of gun violence this year, including the murder of a man who was shot while walking home from the park with his children.

As of Friday morning, police report that there have been 286 homicides in the city, a level of violence not seen in the city in more than a decade.

In West Philadelphia, residents say they’re not standing in fear, they are fighting back.

Police manned a West Philly neighborhood on foot Friday afternoon, handing out flyers to neighbors and leaving them in mailboxes.

“They need to put the guns down. Enough is enough,” West Philadelphia resident Cherri Wilkins said.

They’re looking for answers after Will Myatt was shot multiple times in the torso after leaving a nearby park. Officials say a suspect in a black mask targeted him. There was absolutely no regard for his 3- or 9-year-old children and their dog.

“They saw their dad get shot and it’s going to be with them. It’s sad and scary,” Wilkins said.

“How do you feel when a child is 7,10, 11 gotta go to a gravesite every birthday to see his father in a grave?” West Philly resident Derrick Smith said.

Homicides are up more than 34% in Philadelphia so far this year, with more than 100 children caught in the crosshairs.

Change is happening on North Simpson Street near Race Street, where 7-year-old Zamar Jones was shot and killed while playing on his porch.

The block association has been trying to get speed bumps placed on their street for two years. It took that shooting for the Streets Department to make progress.

“I’m upset. I’m upset it took for this to happen, for Zamar to get shot and we lose him, now they wanna do something,” resident Makeeba McNeely said.

Neighbors believe it will curb drive-by shootings.

To further help cut down on the violence, elders are also reaching out to young adults.

“If they have animosity and need somebody to talk to, we have people on this block that will talk to them civilized and make sure they go the right way,” Smith said.

A captain from the Southwest police division says they’re doing their best to be proactive. That not only includes finding criminals but also getting the community to trust and work with them.

Philadelphia Reporting 355 Homicides So Far This Year After Violent Weekend Across City
By Howard Monroe
October 5, 2020 at 11:33 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Following a violent weekend across Philadelphia, the city is now reporting 355 homicides for the year. That’s one homicide away from 2019’s total.

At least 14 people were shot, some of them fatally injured — adding to the city’s already high homicide rate.

On Saturday afternoon, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed in broad daylight at North 27th and Cambria Streets in North Philadelphia.

Then, just a few hours later — and few blocks away — a 28-year-old man was shot 20 times.

It happened about at about 5 p.m. on the 2800 block of Mascher Avenue in Fairhill.

The victim was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital.

On Sunday evening, just before 7 p.m. a 15-year-old was shot and killed in a South Philadelphia double shooting.

He was shot in the head at 22nd and Jackson Streets. An 18-year-old was also shot in the lower back and is listed in critical condition.

In addition to the homicide there were at least 10 other shootings with the victims in various conditions.

Among them is a 25-year-old man who was shot near the intersection of Walter and Newkirk Streets in South Philadelphia.

“The only information we got is a dark-colored vehicle, a van, possibly dark blue was last seen fleeing from the scene,” Inspector Scott Small said. “We’re not certain if that was the shooter in that vehicle or the vehicle was just fleeing from the scene.”

Police haven’t announced any arrests in any of these shootings.

Philadelphia Reaches Most Homicides Since 2007 With Six Murders Monday
By CBS3 Staff
October 5, 2020 at 11:35 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A surge in deadly violence across Philadelphia Monday night has added to a grim milestone. The city recorded six new homicides Monday, bringing the total to 361 for the year — the most murders in the city since 2007.

Philadelphia police say a man and woman were found shot dead inside of a home in West Oak Lane during another violent day in the City of Brotherly Love.

The double homicide happened inside of a home on the 6500 block of North Lambert Street Monday.

Police say a 48-year-old woman was found unresponsive by a family member in the home’s living room. The victim was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

A 29-year-old man was found in the basement. He was shot multiple times. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene around 6:30 p.m.

No arrests have been made but a weapon was recovered in the basement.

“This is a terrible situation we’re in,” South Philadelphia resident John Upshur said.

The city’s grim milestone, which now in just early October, passes all of the 356 homicides in Philadelphia last year, was matched by what happened outside of a South Philadelphia Lowe’s around 1 p.m. Monday.

That’s when police say a 21-year-old employee of the home improvement store was shot nine times in the parking lot. The victim was rushed to Jefferson Hospital and was pronounced dead.

“They should try to take all these guns from these young kids because they don’t value life anymore,” Upshur said.

Unfortunately, the milestone was topped by at least five more killings.

A 27-year-old man was shot three times in the head and killed in Grays Ferry around 2:15 p.m. Monday.

Minutes after 5 p.m. came murder No. 358. Police say a 22-year-old man was shot multiple times and killed Monday evening in Philadelphia’s Oxford Circle neighborhood.

In Philadelphia’s Lawncrest neighborhood, police say a man in his early 20s was shot once in the back of the head and killed. It happened on the 800 block of Brill Street around 6:45 p.m.

No arrests have been made in any of Monday’s six murders.

Police Sources Describe ‘Culture Of Lawlessness’ On Philadelphia Streets As City Already Passes 2019 Homicide Rate
By Joe Holden

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia officials are once again speaking out about growing gun violence. It comes as the city surpassed last year’s total for homicides, and we’re not even halfway through October.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw spoke at a rare news conference Tuesday morning, taking questions about the city’s homicide rate. She says there have been some positive trends over the last month but she also called this a “harsh reality.”

Crystal Justice says only after her son was shot and killed did she realize for the kids around her home in West Philadelphia, there’s nothing to do.

“We gotta go to the root of the source. A couple months later I seen in the community, it was nothing for the youth to do and I’m like then this is why they’re getting into so much,” Justice said.

Eyewitness News chatted with Justice about her late son, Nasir Hopkins, hours after Philadelphia’s police commissioner of nine months took questions about a homicide rate that just surpassed the entire number of killings in 2019.

“We are working very diligently and passionately toward the goal of a safer Philadelphia,” Outlaw said.

Commissioner Outlaw says a number of factors have contributed to what department sources tell CBS3 is a culture of lawlessness on city streets. The commissioner hinted at that when taking questions.

“Folks are telling us on the street flat out, ‘don’t worry, I’ll get out,’ for various reasons. We’re seeing a lack of consequences,” Outlaw said.

18th District Commander Capt. Matt Gillespie says guns are at the root of the trouble in his district, where he says 99% of people want to go to work and return home safely each day.

“No longer fists, no longer one shooter, multiple shooters, multiple firearms, multiple rounds being fired. It’s scary out here for the people that live here, the officers, the commanders, everybody,” Gillespie said.

Outlaw also said arrests of narcotic sellers and for firearm violations are up in targeted areas.

Still, six people were killed in Philadelphia on Monday and those Eyewitness News talked to say that’s their harsh reality.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw Calls 7 Murders In 24 Hours Across City ‘Sickening’
By CBS3 Staff
October 6, 2020 at 1:00 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The City of Philadelphia’s 2020 homicide total stands at 363 after six murders on Monday and one Tuesday morning. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle "Bug Eyes" Outlaw called the recent uptick in gun violence across Philadelphia “tragic, shameful, and sickening.”

Two words seem to capture the so-called “gun violence pandemic” and “harsh reality.”

Press conferences have seemingly dwindled under Outlaw’s leadership of the force, but after the homicide count for 2020 eclipsed the entire number of killings in 2019, the commissioner and top commanders called for a conference, saying every act of gun violence is tragic and it’s shameful when children are the victims.

She began with saying Philadelphia finds itself lamenting over the violence.

The city’s grim milestone, which now in just early October passes all of the 356 homicides in Philadelphia last year, was matched by what happened outside of a South Philadelphia Lowe’s around 1 p.m. Monday.

That’s when, police say, a 21-year-old employee of the home improvement store was shot nine times in the parking lot. The victim was rushed to Jefferson Hospital and was pronounced dead.

“They should try to take all these guns from these young kids because they don’t value life anymore,” South Philadelphia resident John Upshur said.

Unfortunately, the milestone was topped by at least five more killings on Monday afternoon.

A 19-year-old victim was the seventh person gunned down in the city within 24 hours. It happened inside a Chinese takeout restaurant in Philadelphia’s Kingsessing neighborhood just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The city’s homicide rate is now the highest it has been since 1991.

“Just one murder is too many, and we must continue to work together within the community and with our city, state and federal partners in order for lasting progress to be made,” Outlaw said.

Despite the overall rise in homicides, Outlaw says there are positive trends in reducing homicides and increasing arrests. Philadelphia police say the city’s overall homicide rates are down 10% from September to October compared to August to September.

Killings in a half-dozen districts are down dramatically.

Outlaw called Monday’s six homicides a “set back” in the positive trends.

Outlaw says she understands the frustrations coming from the residents who live in high-crime neighborhoods and asks that they come forward if or when they have information regarding a crime.

“We are only one component of the criminal justice system and the notion that the police department alone is not only erroneous but it also absolves other stakeholders of their duty to participate in the solution to this public health crisis,” Outlaw said. “Fortunately, we do not stand alone in managing this crisis. Positive and sustained impact will require a collective and holistic effort from law enforcement, the community and all other who are serious about saving lives during this crisis.”

Ben Nash, head of investigations for the Philadelphia Police Department, says the surge in gun violence is happening across the nation and that it’s being caused by an influx of illegal guns on the streets.

(PHILADELPHIA) — Gun violence continues to take its toll on Philadelphia. Police rushed to multiple shooting scenes overnight.

It’s become all too familiar through the entire city, police lights, strobing through the night as investigators try to solve another shooting.

In Kensington, a victim shot and taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.

Then a gruesome scene around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police say a woman found in her car after being shot in the neck. A skirmish that potentially started at Stenton Avenue and East Washington Lane ended up at 65th and 20th Streets.

A blue Chevy Malibu riddled with bullet holes on the driver’s side door, the window shot out. There is no word on her condition at this time.

The violence cresting overnight on the 4700 block of Rorer Street. A victim transported to the hospital after being shot in what police believe may have been related to a home invasion.

‘People Are Getting More Desperate’: Philadelphia Police Trying To Solve Multiple Carjackings In Same Division This Week
By Dan Koob
October 15, 2020 at 5:55 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia police are trying to solve multiple carjackings this week. That includes one committed in broad daylight.

Police say carjacking is cyclical and at this point, there’s no reason to believe a pattern exists in the city.

Police say six suspects follow a 21-year-old man into his car at gunpoint in a brazen, broad daylight carjacking Monday in Port Richmond.

“They did release the victim once they got to West Philadelphia — he was unharmed — but they did take his car keys, his car, his wallet and his phone,” Philadelphia Police Lt. Robert Brockenbrough said.

Brockenbrough of the East Detective Division says police still need your help in identifying the suspects.

It’s one of three carjackings in this division alone this week, including one at a gas station on Hunting Park Avenue and another overnight in Kensington.

“Unfortunately, this has been a bad year, 2020 is just a very strange year with COVID and everything, so, unfortunately, people are getting more desperate. There are less jobs and desperate people commit desperate acts so yes, there has been like an increase in thefts from vehicle,” Brockenbrough said.

Despite this, Brockenbrough says there’s no reason to believe a pattern exists.

However, staying vigilant is always important. Be aware of your surroundings and make sure your car is locked and windows are up.

“If you are the victim of a robbery, give the individuals the property they want. Nothing is worth your life,” Brockenbrough said.

In terms of break-ins, theft from cars is actually down 10% in 2020, as compared to 2019, according to police statistics.
