Man Fatally Shot In Pharmacy Parking Lot

Police: First Shooting Occurs In Rite Aid Parking Lot

POSTED: 3:25 pm EDT June 4, 2007
UPDATED: 9:02 pm EDT June 4, 2007

PHILADELPHIA -- Less than two hours after a man was shot to death outside a pharmacy, dozens of gunshots rang out just a few blocks away.

The first shooting occurred at about 2:49 p.m. in the parking lot outside the Rite Aid Pharmacy at Broad Street and Wyoming Avenue in the city's Logan section, police said.

One police source told NBC 10's Mike Strug that the shooting wasn't a random homicide but looked like a hit, with the killer waiting for the victim.

Grainy surveillance video from a camera at the pharmacy -- as police described it -- appeared to show a blue pickup truck pulling up to the building just before 3 p.m. Several men got out and almost immediately at least one shot was fired, possibly by a man waiting along the store.

A single shell casing was left in the street where police believe the killer stood and fired.

A 29-year-old victim, struck in his left side, fell against a tan minivan parked along side the pickup. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but later pronounced dead.

The shooter ran north on Belfield Avenue, police said.

The men in the pickup jumped back in and drove off. There's speculation they may have gone to get help, that the victim was too big for them to move, Strug reported. The pickup came back, but by then paramedics were at the scene and the men in the pickup apparently disappeared.

Police had one side of the Rite Aid roped off with caution tape as they continued to investigate.

The fatal shooting was Philadelphia's 169th of the year, police said.

The second shooting was reported just after 4:30 p.m. about three blocks from the Rite Aid.

Police placed at least 45 markers to show all of the shell casings on the 4400 block of North Cleveland Street in the city's Nicetown section.

The 18-year-old victim of that shooting was struck in the back, rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center and listed in stable condition.

Police took one person into custody near the Cleveland Street scene but were saying whether he was charged with any role in the shooting.

Detectives were also trying to determine whether there was any connection between the two shootings.

At least two other shootings were also reported in the city Monday afternoon and evening.

Two men were taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition after being struck by bullets at about 8 p.m. in the middle of the intersection at Sepviva and Letterly streets in the city's Kensington section.

And another man was reported shot at about 4 p.m. near 54th Street and Osage Avenue.

Rising Violence Threatens Long-Time Daycare

By Lauren Wilson

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 8, 2007 - A Delaware daycare in fear of its own neighborhood is threatening to pull up stakes, and its long roots in the community.

In the past month alone, there have been three incidents involving guns nearby.

The West Center City Early Learning Center has been at 6th and Madison for 30 years.

Families depend on the daycare, but members of the board told city council on Thursday that this center may be forced to shut down because there is so much violence in this neighborhood. There have been three incidents involving guns in the past month alone.

"A few weeks ago we actually had a shooting right across the street in the park. The cleaning crew that we had actually quit because their windows were shot out. Our executive director has been threatened," explained the center's chairman Jack Witzman.

This neighborhood is no stranger to violence, but residents say trouble usually occurs at night. It's the increase in daytime violence that has shaken the very foundation of the learning center attended by 105 local children.

"They could get some more protections around here. Walking police officers wouldn't hurt none," said Susie Terry.

82-year-old Terry hopes to see the return of cops walking the beat in her neighborhood, and so does Councilman Sammy Prado.

"I'll do everything I can not to let this place close. This community needs this place here," said Prado, who said he would ask the mayor and the chief of police for help.

Concerned residents like Ulysses James pledge to bring community programs to the area, despite the rising violence.

"I know what goes on around in this area, but I'm going to come into the area and try to stop some it, as much as I possibly can," said James.

A meeting between center and city officials is scheduled for next week.

Kensington Triple Shooting Leaves Man, Woman Dead
Police: Two Suspects Under Arrest In Hunting Park

Mother, Father Killed in Kensington Shooting

6 People Murdered in Philly in 24 Hours

By Erin O'Hearn

KENSINGTON - June 21, 2007 - An argument over where to sell drugs ended in deadly violence on Thursday night.

The shooting that followed the argument left two people dead and one in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.

Police have two men in custody for questioning. They were expected to charge at least one of those men with murder.

"I don't know how this happened. He just left the house and he held his son for the last time today," said Darryll Davis, the father of one victim.

His 20-year-old son left behind three young children after being gunned down near the corner of Somerset and Emerald in the city's Kensington section.

His father says Raheem Haines was getting ready to go to school to be a plumber.

29-year-old Dianna Patrick was also killed. Her sister, 28-year-old Jennifer Patrick, underwent surgery at Temple University Hospital for gunshot wounds.

"They're beautiful mothers. One's got six kids. The other has five. These kids need their mother," said Elsie Torrez.

Police say two men confronted Rhaheem, the Patrick sisters and another woman. They started arguing about selling drugs on a neighborhood corner. When the women told the men there were too many kids in the neighborhood to sell drugs, police say the men opened fire.

"We need to stop all this shooting you know what I mean. Put the guns down," said Davis.

Police were able to get a description of the suspects and pulled over two men on the 4400 block of North 9th street.

The triple shooting comes less than 24 hours after a shooting left three people dead on the 1600 block of North 6th street. Police have no suspects or a motive in that case.

"This is a terrible problem, but it is a problem all over the Commonwealth and all over the country," said Mayor Street.

Hours after this shooting, gunfire left another man dead in Southwest Philadelphia (READ MORE).

The murder toll has climbed to 194 for the year in Philadelphia.

Well on the way to another new record

Philly Murder Total Nears 200

Olney/Philadelphia -- Four people were shot, one fatally, at a crowded city playground on Tuesday evening, bringing Philadelphia's death toll close to 200 this year.

Two carloads of men drove across the grass to the basketball courts and started arguing with a group playing ball, police said. A fistfight broke out, followed by an exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses estimated that 60 to 70 people were at the playground in the city's Olney section at the time. Most took off running, they said.

"It might have been an argument over a girl. We're not sure," said Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, who went to the scene.

One of the three people wounded remained in critical condition late Tuesday, authorities said.

Two victims were found near the playground, while police found two more at Albert Einstein Medical Center, along with several men who had driven them there, officials said. They were being interviewed, but no arrests were immediately made.

Johnson, as he has before, blamed the city's continuing violence on lax gun laws, poverty, unemployment and witnesses who refuse to help police make arrests.

"If these legislators don't realize that we have a handgun problem here in the City of Philadelphia, then there's something wrong," Johnson said.

Playground Shooting Adds to Philly Murder Toll

Police: Olney Shooting 199th Homicide in Phila. this Year

by Erin O'Hearn, Bob Monek, and T.J. Alexander

OLNEY - June 27, 2007 - A crowded playground became a shooting ground on Tuesday night leaving one person dead and three others wounded. The murder brings the toll to 199 for the year.

Police say around 6:00 p.m., two carloads of niggers pulled up to the playground and started arguing with a group playing ball.

A fistfight, apparently over a girl, quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

The shooting happened next to the Olney Recreation Center at A and Spencer Streets. As many as 70 people, many of them niglets, may have been on the playground at the time, police said.

Two victims were found near the playground. An off-duty police officer passing by the scene was able to get tag numbers and police found two more victims at Albert Einstein Medical Center, along with several men who drove them there.

At least three men were taken into custody and being questioned. Police believe this shooting may be gang related.

The unidentified victim is officially the 199th person murdered in Philadelphia this year.

Police reported Wednesday that the murder toll is 199 as opposed to 201 due to their assessment that two of the killings were "justifiable". ???

On March 6th a group of men tried to rob a 16-year-old on East Johnston Street and the 16-year-old stabbed one of the robbers. The alleged robber was identified as Specer Edwards, who later died at the hospital.

Then on April 26th Jamar Jackson attempted to rob an 18-year-old. The teen fought back and Jackson's gun discharged during the struggle, killing Jackson. That was what was thought of as 133.

Philadelphia Police Coon Commissioner Sylvester Johnson blames lax gun laws, poverty, unemployment and witnesses who refuse to come forward and talk to police. He said neither he nor the mayor should be held responsible.

Police: Officers Fire At Least 80 Times, Kill Man

POSTED: 7:04 am EDT July 9, 2007
UPDATED: 6:43 pm EDT July 9, 2007

At least 80 shots were fired in a South Philadelphia neighborhood Sunday night, but when it was all said and done, bullets had grazed two Philadelphia police officers and one gun-waving suspect was dead, according to police.

Seven officers fired off the shots that killed a man near Taney and Tasker streets, police said.

Investigators said the man was armed with a stolen gun loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

Authorities said police shot the unnamed man after he would not drop his gun. Police said officers opened fire when the man pointed the gun at them and would not drop it.

Authorities said the man did not fire any shots.

Two officers suffered graze wounds, possibly from ricocheting bullet, but were treated at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the dead man has had two previous arrests involving weapons but they have not yet released his name.

Philadelphia police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said he is concerned about the number of shots fired and plans to review training procedures.

Many in the neighborhood were enraged over the shooting. Police did not say whose bullets struck the two officers, but the case is under investigation, which is routine in police-involved shootings.

6 Dead in Violent Weekend
Security Cameras Down at One Scene

By Chad Pradelli

PHILADELPHIA - July 23, 2007 - Six people were killed during the weekend in Philadelphia, including a 23-year-old who was shot on a corner with a surveillance camera. But it turns out that camera wasn't working.

The carnage began around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when a teenager was stabbed to death in the 1300 block of Venango Street.

It continued into Sunday when four people were shot inside Abay Wheelers bar shortly after midnight. Three were killed. The fourth hospitalized in critical condition.

Betty Jennings' nephew, Arthur, was among the dead. Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, 23-year-old Charles Tunstall was shot on the corner of 54th and Arlington in Wynnefield.

A surveillance camera on that corner - installed last November by the Philadelphia Commercial Development Corporation - wasn't working.

The former president of the PCDC blames computer hackers for the failure of the $700,000 system. The camera system, paid for with a $700,000 grant from the Justice Department, hasn't worked since March. Ronin Security, the company that installed the cameras, has had its phone number disconnected.

The final shooting for the weekend occurred just before 5 a.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Dauphin St. in North Philadelphia

Witness Silence Frustrates Officials
Rendell Comments on Philadelphia Violence

By Vernon Odom - House Nigger

FRANKFORD - July 24, 2007 - Philadelphia police are investigating another overnight murder. The killing comes just hours after Mayor John Street told city residents, that they are partly to blame for the city's soaring murder rate.

In the latest killing, an unidentified 25-year-old man was shot to death in a Frankford Park, around 1:30 a.m. No arrests have been made.

The shooting comes just hours after Mayor John Street told city residents, that they are partly to blame for the city's soaring murder rate. Street says the bar where three people were killed over the weekend, will remain closed until the owners tell police who was present at the time of the shooting.

When asked about the worst homicide rate in Philadelphia in a decade, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell said, "First and foremost we need more police. As you know, last year we gave the city money for one hundred new police. Those people should be coming out of the academy and the requirement is that they're all out on the street on patrol. We took over the function, the state police took over the function of policing the state highways that go through the city, that is putting 70 to 80 new police, Philadelphia police, back out on the street."

Police have met with the usual wall of silence as they try to investigate the shootings that occurred early Sunday.

"The one thing we don't have is witnesses," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said at a news conference Monday, bemoaning the culture of silence that too often surrounds homicide investigations.

The slain bar patrons were among six people killed and 37 shot and wounded in a 72-hour period from Friday through Sunday in Philadelphia, which has tallied more than 230 homicides this year.

Community activists question why the bloodshed has continued unabated. But Johnson said police cannot solve crimes if witnesses do not come forward.

"Until people in the community realize that they have to get involved in this, then nothing will change," Johnson said Monday.

One victim's cousin told reporters that an unpaid wager on the Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright boxing match prompted the Southwest Philadelphia shooting spree.

Police could not confirm those accounts, Johnson said.

The gunfight also took the lives of Claude Demetrius Snelling, 30, and Jamar Franklin Thompson, 31, while leaving a 37-year-old man critically injured.

Two other men were shot and killed before dawn Sunday, and a sixth person was stabbed to death late Saturday night.

In one of those shootings, 23-year-old Charles Tunstall was shot on the corner of 54th and Arlington in Wynnefield. A surveillance camera on that corner, installed last November by the Philadelphia Commercial Development Corporation, wasn't working.

The former president of the PCDC blames computer hackers for the failure of the $700,000 system. The camera system, paid for with a $700,000 grant from the Justice Department, hasn't worked since March. Ronin Security, the company that installed the cameras, has had its phone number disconnected.

No arrests had been made Monday in any of the slayings.

Police should not shoulder all the blame, said Johnson, who noted the city's enduring poverty, unemployment and dropout rates.

"When you look at all these things together, it brings violence," he said.

The city operates youth curfew centers, meets regularly with neighborhood groups and plans to put several hundred new officers on the street this year, he said.

"It's a national problem. It's not just in Philadelphia," Johnson said.

Crime-Fighting Cameras Broken In Some City Neighborhoods
Sources: Police Learn Of Outage While Seeking Shooting Footage

POSTED: 5:10 pm EDT July 24, 2007
UPDATED: 5:47 pm EDT July 24, 2007

PHILADELPHIA -- A major Philadelphia crime-fighting tool is out of commission in Wynnefield and other city neighborhoods.

Surveillance cameras that are supposed to help keep an eye on crime, aren't working, including one that was located a block from a homicide scene.

People who live and work along the 54th Street corridor in Overbrook are angry, NBC 10's Deanna Durante reported.

They were planning to protest Tuesday night to send a message to the Philadelphia Commercial Development Corp. that installed the cameras and now admits it took them offline.

"As safe as we were feeling, all of the good stuff we had to say about it goes right down the toilet within five seconds," said one man working at a local business.

"That's awful. That's terrible. The city needs to do something about it," said another woman.

The frustration comes with the rising body count in the city and the knowledge that some surveillance cameras that once made them feel safe are right now useless.

"The cameras worked. The cameras worked. The cameras, in our opinion, have been compromised, and we're attempting to -- with the assistance of both the city and federal law enforcement agencies -- determine how, why and by who," said Aqil Sabur, PCDC's interim president and CEO.

Installed in November with federal grant money, 21 cameras in the city designed to help cut down on crime are currently disabled.

Police sources said Sunday, after another murder victim was killed along 54th Street, they attempted to retrieve video to help solve the crime.

Those sources said it was stunning to learn there is no video and hasn't been for months.

PCDC officials said the cameras were taken offline in May after hackers and lightning disrupted the system.

NBC 10 was shown a letter from the manufacturer of the cameras as evidence of the damage and asked for video proof that the cameras had worked until that point.

"The tape is not available. I mean, there would have to be an official request. We only handle requests on the videotape either from law enforcemrnt or a proper subpeona," Sabur said.

Durante reported that she was shown a logbook written by PCDC employees who preformed random checks from March into May.

"The frustration that we've experienced has been the continual reporting of erroneous information: they never worked; they were expensive," Sabur said.

The PCDC is paying for the cameras thanks to more than $400,000 in federal grant money. The 21 cameras it operates are in three areas: at 54th and Berks streets; on Landsdowne Avenue between 52nd and 63rd streets; and Market Street between 46th and 63rd streets.

All of the cameras are currently disabled, and the PCDC said its sympathies go out to the victim who was killed a block away from the disabled camera.

But officials said they can't put these cameras back online until the damage is repaired, and that could be at least a week or maybe two.

"The cameras, in and of themselves, would not have stopped the crime. The camera would have aided in solving the crime," Sabur said.

Police have not reported an arrest in the homicide that occurred early Sunday.

Asked if, when the cameras were back online, NBC 10 could come and see could come in and see the video, the answer was yes, so we'll continue following this story.
