Man charged with scalding 1-year-old boy

A 20-year-old Chicago man was ordered held on bond today after being charged with scalding his girlfriend's 1-year-old son, authorities said.
Travis Washington of the 10900 block of South Wabash Avenue was charged with aggravated battery of a child, endangering the life and health of a child and domestic battery, said Chicago News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.
He was ordered held on $150,000 bond today by Circuit Court Judge Ramon Ocasio III, said Andrew Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney.
On Sept. 21, at about 10 a.m. police responded to Washington's home after being called about a domesti
c disturbance, said Perez.
When police arrived they found that Washington's 19-year-old girlfriend had been battered by Washington, Perez said.
As police investigated they discovered that the woman's 1-year-old son had "visible marks or burns", Perez said. The girlfriend told police that Washington had scalded the boy when he was taking care of him on Sept. 18, at about 1 p.m.
Perez said the man scalded him in hot water, leaving burns to his legs, buttocks and lower back. The boy had not been treated for his injuries, Perez said.
According to prosecutors the boy went to the bathroom on the floor of the home of Washington and the girlfriend, said Conklin. Washington got angry and took the boy and put the boy in a sink which only had hot water running. The baby's bottom was put in hot water in for between three to four minutes. While in the water the baby was squirming and crying in pain, Conklin said.
When the baby was taken out of the water Washingon saw redness and blis
tering and the boys skin peeled off when the man rubbed a towel over him, Conklin said.
The child was not taken to a hospital until Sept. 21, the day police responded to the domestic disturbance call, officials said.
A University of Chicago Medical Center doctor said the boy suffered 2nd degree burns which were consistent with the boy being "held in burning water,'' Conklin said.
Kendall Marlowe, a spokesman for the Department of Child and Family Services said they are investigating the allegations. He said a toddler has been removed from the home and is in the custody of family members. The office has had no other contact with the family.
