Family of Four Killed in Violent Palmdale Crash ID’d by L.A. Coroner’s Office

Authorities on Thursday identified the victims of a fatal car crash in Palmdale that took the lives of a family of four earlier this week.

Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner's office identified the father as Bryan Byrd, 21, and the mother as Lei’ani Cathey, 20. Their two young daughters, 2-year-old Lei’niyah Byrd and 1-year-old Blayre Byrd, also died in the crash, he said.

The family was from Lancaster.

"This is very difficult to see when we have a family pass away from a traffic collision," L.A. County Sheriff's Department Detective Rowell Quemuel told KTLA.

The family was traveling in a four-door Kia on the Sierra Highway around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday when their car swerved out of the lane, according to a sheriff's news release.

Their car crossed over the double yellow lines and collided head-on with an Antelope Valley Transit Authority vanpool vehicle, the release stated.

The mangled wreck came to rest on the side of the dirt shoulder, aerial footage showed.

Bryan Byrd, Cathey and Lei'niyah all died at the scene, officials said. Blayre was pronounced dead at Antelope Valley Hospital a short time later.

The children were both strapped in car seats, the release stated. Quemuel noted that none of the victims were ejected from the vehicle.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A wild chain of events led to a deadly car crash as officers chased two people inside a stolen car.

One of those people did not survive.

Now authorities are explaining what happened before, during and after that crash in Northwest Miami-Dade.

A devastated mother screams (Video) in disbelief outside Ryder Trauma Center after being told her daughter was killed in a crash off Northwest 22nd Avenue and 71st Street following a police pursuit.

Police say the newer-model BMW Winny Victor, 19, was traveling in rolled over several times before she and the driver were ejected, according to Miami-Dade Police.

“The vehicle rolled over once it hit the gate in the field. Both were ejected so it appears they weren’t wearing their seat belts,” said Miami-Dade Police Det. Chris Thomas.

Investigators say Zaykesse Johnson, 18, was behind the wheel. They say it was sometime around 3:15 detectives tried to pull the vehicle over in the area of Northwest 79th Street and 6th Avenue after determining it was stolen.

“Once the officers exited the vehicle and they approached the vehicle, the driver put the vehicle in motion,” said Thomas.

Police say the driver struck the detective’s vehicle and took off. Officers began a pursuit. They say the driver struck another vehicle around Northwest 22nd Avenue and 79th Street and kept going.

“At that time the officer observed the vehicle around 71st and 22nd Avenue lose control around the railroad tracks, hit a gate in the field behind us. And the vehicle rolled over several times and ejected both passengers inside of the vehicle,” said Thomas.

The driver and passenger were rushed to Ryder Trauma Center where Victor was pronounced dead.

Women accused of hitting two stores, leading high-speed chase down Lamar

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A pair of thieves are behind bars after allegedly targeting two businesses in a span of minutes before leading police on a high-speed chase down Lamar Avenue.

An employee told police Keidra Lanier and Dominique Bassett entered the Dollar General store located in the 2200 block of Lamar Avenue over the weekend and grabbed 11 one-gallon containers of antifreeze. They placed the items in a cart and then fled to their car.

As they were loading the stolen items into their vehicle, an employee ran out to get a picture of the car and was confronted by Lanier. She allegedly knocked the phone out of the employee’s hand, jumped behind the wheel and fled down Lamar.

Before employees even had a chance to call 911, officers were dispatched to the Popeye’s down the street. Authorities arrived on the scene so quickly workers were able to point the fleeing suspects out to police who immediately gave chase.

Despite having police right behind them, Lanier reportedly refused to stop and began weaving in and out of traffic going more than 80 miles per hour.

Both suspects were eventually taken into custody after she wrecked the car.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- The popular "In My Feelings" challenge went wrong when one man attempted to take the challenge by jumping onto a moving car.:D

The challenge began when Instagram user theshiggyshow posted a video of himself dancing to Drake's song "In My Feelings" on a road.

Others began trying to replicate theshiggyshow's dance, but some added more dangerous elements to the challenge, such as trying to dance after jumping out of a moving vehicle.

22-year-old Jaylen Norwood of Florida said in a Facebook post that he planned to do the dance, jump onto the hood of an oncoming car and then continue dancing.

Unfortunately, he slipped on an oil slick just moments before the car arrived.:p

Norwood suffered only minor injuries.

A Columbus father accidentally ran over his toddler twice while texting, police say
Updated August 01, 2018 02:51 PM

0728_COLO_COOK.JPG

A police officer told a tragic tale Tuesday of a Columbus man who allegedly was texting when he twice ran over his own child in his driveway.

Police Officer 1st Class Chad Daugherty was testifying during a preliminary hearing for Trenton Cook, 24, charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle and with failing to exercise due care, both misdemeanors.

Daugherty said Cook was coming home from work May 8 when his 2002 Ford Explorer ran out of gas:rolleyes: on Victory Drive, and had to call a friend to help him before he could continue on to his home at 2438 Bond Ave., where he arrived around 2 p.m.

He saw his girlfriend’s children playing outside in the driveway, so he waited until they went inside before pulling in, the officer said. Then he pulled in, he felt a bump, as if he’d hit something, Daugherty said, so he put the car in reverse and backed up – and then felt the bump again.

He got out to look, and discovered he had run over his 22-month-old son Zakai A. Cook, whom he gathered in his arms and brought inside the home, where his girlfriend called 911. The toddler died later from a head injury in the emergency room of Piedmont Columbus Regional’s midtown campus.

Daugherty said police initially were mystified: The driveway was level and open; the sky was clear; and the child had been wearing a red T-shirt. Investigators could not figure out why Cook didn’t see the boy.

Then they checked his cell phone data through Verizon, and saw he had sent a text at 2:04 p.m., and the 911 call came in at 2:05 p.m.

Daugherty said he questioned Cook about this in late June, when Cook admitted he had used his phone while driving, but did not recall sending a text at that time.

Upper Darby Police: Man Follows Woman, Slashes Her Tires While She’s At Work During Road Rage Incident

road-rage-suspect.jpg

DREXEL HILL, Pa. (CBS) — Authorities in Delaware County are asking for the public’s help to bring a tire-slashing suspect to justice. Upper Darby police say the man slashed the woman’s tires while she was at work in a case of road rage.

Police say a 34-year-old woman was trying to get a driver off her tail on Garrett Road on Saturday afternoon, repeatedly braking about a quarter-of-a-mile before pulling into an alley off Garrett Road in Drexel Hill.

According to police, surveillance video shows the man  taking an ice pick to both driver’s side tires, flattening them in a matter of seconds. He’s then seen running off.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. after the woman parked her car for work, believing a road rage dispute had long passed.

“She leaves about a half-hour later to get a bucket and notices both tires on the driver’s side are flattened,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “She figures right away it was the guy.”

The surveillance video shows the man  snooping around before piercing the tires.

The woman told police he followed her down Garrett Road for at least a quarter-of-a-mile. They say he was driving in a black sedan and was riding her bumper.

Police say she did nothing to trigger his reaction, other than going the speed limit.

“That’s usually how road rage starts. Somebody is either in a big hurry and can’t get around you,” said Chitwood.

If you recognize the suspect, call police.

A cab driver was arrested for a road-rage brawl in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday that was caught on video.

Alyssa Jenna Mallett, 25, was driving a yellow taxi westbound on West 35th Street near Seventh Avenue around 4:45 p.m. when she was possibly cut off by a Nissan SUV, cops said.

Mallett exited her cab and confronted the driver, a 24-year-old man, punching, scratching and biting him, police said.

When a 22-year-old female passenger in the SUV got out, Mallett also began punching her and pulling her hair as passersby tried to break it up, as seen on witness video.

Mallet then got back in her cab and tried to drive away, hitting an unattended UPS truck and another unoccupied parked vehicle before backing up and striking a fourth unoccupied car.

Mallett was arrested at the scene and charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and assault.

Inside the SUV were an 11-year-old girl and a 2-week-old girl, neither of whom was injured in the incident. The adult passengers of the SUV were treated at the scene for their injuries.

A spokesperson for the TLC confirmed Mallett’s license was suspended pending the outcome of the case.

She has had her TLC license for 14 months and is facing revocation over additional separate incidents for refusal of service and overcharging passengers.

A city teacher was driving drunk on a school day Friday morning when she struck and killed a man who was walking out of a Bronx hospital, officials said.

Shakira Price, 33, was already fleeing the scene of one accident when she slammed into the 57-year-old man who had just gotten out of a detox program at Jacobi Medical Center at around 10 a.m., according to police and hospital sources.

Price, a teacher at Schuylerville Preparatory High School in the Bronx, had just gotten into an accident with a 72-year-old man driving a Kia, according to police.

The driver of the Kia trailed Price as she tried to flee the scene of that crash.

In her attempt to get away, Price crashed into the man as he was crossing the street at Eastchester Road and Pelham Parkway South near Jacobi, cops said.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, suffered body trauma and was rushed into Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead, cops said.

He had just completed a detox program and was leaving the facility before he was struck, according to hospital workers who declined to give their names.

It wasn’t clear whether the program was for drug or alcohol rehabilitation.

Price was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving.

She was later charged with vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, and driving while ability impaired.

An off-duty city correction officer who aspired to join the NYPD was shot and killed in a possible road rage incident in Queens early Friday morning, police and family members said.

Jonathan Narain, 27, was in his 2013 maroon Honda Accord on his way to work at Rikers Island when a motorcyclist blasted him once in the head on 120th Street and 103rd Avenue in Richmond Hill at around 1:45 a.m., cops said.

The correction officer who had nearly two years on the job had just stopped at a store to pick up food before his life was cut short, authorities said.

Emergency responders rushed Narain – who lived less than a mile away – to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

NYPD Chief of Citywide Investigations William Aubry said surveillance footage from the scene revealed that the victim was making a U-turn when he had an initial encounter with the motorcyclist.

Moments later, the motorcyclist pulled up alongside Narain’s car, which was stopped at a traffic light.

“There was a short exchange of what we believe was a conversation — very, very short, only seconds, and then the shot was fired,” Aubry said.

The suspect, who police described as a dark-skinned man wearing dark clothing and a helmet, shot Narain one time in the left temple before fleeing.

Police say that Narain was armed at the time, but his gun was not out. Authorities do not believe that the fatal attack was work-related.

Hours after the shooting, Narain’s devastated mother – a retired school cook for the Department of Education — showed up to the scene and gazed at the Honda her son died in.

Woman Killed By Friends While Fleeing Walmart Shoplifting Spree
September 14, 2018 at 5:22 pm

ELKTON, Md (WJZ) — 38-year-old Chermaine Mayo is the woman authorities said ran over and killed her own friend while trying to flee from a shoplifting spree.

“For me, it’s really sad to see that someone could just dehumanize someone like that and leave the scene,” says Captain Joe Zurolo, Elkton Police Department.

The spree happened around 1 a.m. on September 8.

Police said Mayo and her two accomplices, Donisha Harris and Keneesha Cunningham, tried leaving the Walmart off Pulaski Highway without paying for over $1,000 worth of merchandise.

A security officer followed the trio and tried snapping photos of their car.

“In an attempt to conceal the tag, the victim, Kaneesha Cunningham, jumped on the trunk of the vehicle and tried to use her body to cover tag,” said Captain Zurolo.

Police said Mayo was behind the wheel and reversed, hitting a curb, leaving Cunningham trapped under the car before reversing and hitting another curb.

“It’s crazy, I mean a total disregard of life in my opinion. They didn’t even attempt to at least render air” said Captain Zurolo.

Cunningham was pronounced dead on the scene, while the other two suspects fled on foot and were quickly apprehended.

Suspect in fatal road-rage attack works for the MTA: sources
By Larry Celona
September 16, 2018 | 3:35pm

An MTA maintenance worker has been busted in last week’s road-rage killing of a city jail guard, law-enforcement sources told The Post on Sunday.

Gifford Hunter, 30 — who works at the transit agency’s Gun Hill Bus Depot in The Bronx — shot Rikers guard and aspiring NYPD cop Jonathan Narain, 27, in the head at the corner of 120th Street and 103rd Avenue in Queens early Friday, authorities said

Police followed surveillance video of Hunter riding his motorcycle from the scene back to his home in Jamaica, Queens, to nail him, sources said.

Hunter was arrested Sunday and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to sources.

Some of his best friends are jail guards.

A lawyer for the MTA maintenance worker accused of shooting dead a city correction officer in a road-rage incident in Queens claimed in court Monday that his client would never do such a thing — because he has friends who are cops and jail guards.

As Gifford Hunter, 30, pleaded not guilty in a courthouse packed with some 100 jail guards there to show support for slain Correction Officer Jonathan Narain, his lawyer (((Kenneth Finkelman))) made the strange defense to Judge Toni Cimino.

“He tells me he has friends in the corrections department and police department. So he has no reason to have done this,” Finkelman reasoned.

091716-jonathan-narain-feature.jpg

Jonathan Narain

Hunter, who works at the transit agency’s Gun Hill Bus Depot in The Bronx and lives in St. Albans, Queens, was arraigned on murder charges in connection to Friday’s killing of the 27-year-old Rikers guard.

“Based on my interview with my client, I believe that they have the wrong person,” his lawyer insisted.

But the judge wasn’t buying it and ordered Hunter held without bail.

Authorities say Hunter was riding a motorcycle in Richmond Hill early Friday when he allegedly became angry after Narain cut him off while making a U-turn in his car.

Hunter is accused of then pulling up to Narain, an aspiring NYPD cop, at a traffic light and shooting him in the head.

Police tracked Hunter by following surveillance video of him riding his motorcycle from the shooting scene back to his home, cops said.

But Finkelman insisted, “Based on my interview with my client, I believe that they have the wrong person ,” and added that Hunter “has a clean record. He has no history of violence in his background.”

Law enforcement sources previously told The Post that Hunter has six prior arrests on his record – all of which are sealed.

“He doesn’t own a gun,” Finkelman said of his client, insisting, “He has a very clean DMV record.”

Finkelman questioned how cops fingered Hunter, who is the father of a one-year-old, for the murder.

“There were no lineups, no DNA, we heard nothing about any type of evidence,” said Finkelman. “The newspapers and TV say it was a person on a motorcycle with a helmet. You can’t see who’s on the motorcycle…How do we know who this person is?”

Hunter was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted, Hunter faces 25 years to life in prison.

Following his arraignment, roughly 100 correction officers gathered on the courthouse steps.

“Jonathan Narain was a New York City corrections officer that did not deserve to die,” Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen said.

“We’re glad that this could give some closure to the family before they lay our brother to rest. So we want to say thank you again to the NYPD, to the New York City correction officers,” said Husamudeen.

Speaking of Hunter – who is due back in court on Oct. 10 — Husamudeen said: “[W]e know he’s not innocent.”

“The NYPD knows he’s not innocent and when he comes back to court, the evidence and everything [that] comes out, I think it will prove that,” said Husamudeen, who called Narain “a very good man, a good officer, a loved officer and a loved man in his community.”

Narain’s funeral is set for Thursday.

AVONDALE, AZ - Avondale police have arrested a man after a four-vehicle crash on Thursday left one girl dead and three others injured.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon near Dysart and Osborn roads.

On Friday, Avondale police announced the arrest of Tollie Matthews, one of the drivers of one of the vehicles involved.

Court paperwork shows that Matthews took two Oxycodone pills before driving the car. He reportedly collided with a vehicle that was also traveling southbound on Dysart. The collision caused that car to cross over the raised median and hit another vehicle going northbound.

That car, in turn, hit another vehicle.

One girl was killed in the crash as she was trapped inside the car as it was engulfed in flames.

The girl who died was identified by police as Amanda Moreno, a senior at Agua Fria High School.

Another person remains hospitalized in critical condition with multiple broken bones.

Court paperwork shows that Matthews had a prior DUI conviction and was supposed to be driving a vehicle with an ignition interlock device. Police say the car he was in did not have that device.
