Police: Swastika Spray Painted On Front Step Of Home
March 1, 2017 4:29 PM

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police say a swastika was found spray painted on the front step of a home in the Bustleton section of Philadelphia.

Police say a woman walking out of her house on the 10000 block of Clark Place found the swastika spray painted on her front step around 11 a.m.

Police are investigating.

This latest incident comes after gravestones were found toppled at a Jewish cemetery in Wissinoming and unfounded threats made to Jewish community centers in the area.

Haverford College Standing Against Anti-Semitism After Swastika Found Inside Dorm Room
March 2, 2017 1:16 PM

HAVERFORD, Pa. (CBS) — Haverford College is observing a moment of silence as students take a stand against the recent string of hateful acts.

This comes after a backwards swastika was discovered pinned to a bulletin board inside a campus dorm room.

A spokeswoman for the Haverford School District says they’re leaving the investigation up to police, but tells Eyewitness News they don’t believe a Haverford student was involved.

The symbol had been written with chalk and the school was able to erase it.

The college hosted Wednesday night Holocaust survivor Maruis Gherovici who shared his story. :eek:rth:

Man arrested for drawing swastikas in Penn Station
By Danielle Furfaro
March 6, 2017 | 1:25pm | Updated

A 65-year-old Brooklyn man has been busted for drawing swastikas in bathrooms at Penn Station and is now facing hate-crime charges, Gov. Cuomo said Monday.

Pasquale Vargas  allegedly drew eight swastikas in bathrooms around the train hub between Feb. 18 and Sunday, when he was busted by MTA cops.

Vargas is facing eight counts of criminal mischief in the fourth degree – one for each swastika – and each is also being prosecuted as a felony hate crime, Cuomo’s office said.

“The MTA Police and our law enforcement partners across the state – including the State Police – vigorously investigate all hate crimes in order to bring those responsible to justice,” said MTA chief Owen Monaghan in a statement. “No one should think they can get away with trying to intimidate the public in this way.”

Vargas was caught during a surveillance operation — cops saw him leave a previously clean bathroom stall that suddenly had hate graffiti in it, authorities said.

A black Sharpie, like the kind used in the bias crimes, was later found in his back pack, they said.

Vargas, who sources say is Colombian and Puerto Rican, then admitted to drawing the graffiti, cops said.

Cops also suspect that Vargas also wrote “KKK” and “Mexican Go Home” on Penn Station walls. He griped to police that “Mexicans take jobs from Americans.”

Cuomo last year created the State Police Hate Crimes Unit to help other law-enforcement agencies investigate crimes tied to bias.

Vargas’s arrest still leaves several instances of hate graffiti around the city unsolved. A Nazi symbol was found carved on a wall inside a Brooklyn courtroom, and vandals left similar offensive scrawls on a Queens sidewalk and in an Upper West Side church, police sources said.

Anti-Semitic hate crimes are up 94 percent in the Big Apple this year — with 35 reported as of Feb. 26 versus 18 in the same period in 2016.

Overall, hate crimes are up 55 percent in the city — with 68 reported through Feb. 26 compared with 44 during the same stretch last year.

3 'Stupid Teenagers' Apologize for Painting Swastika Outside Library in Berks County
Staff members at a library in Berks County found an apology letter and $50 three days after a swastika made out of shaving cream was found in their parking lot.
By David Chang and Randy Gyllenhaal
Published 2 hours ago

A trio of teen vandals apologized after they used shaving cream  to paint a swastika in the parking lot of a library in Berks County.

A large swastika as well as a Star of David made out of shaving cream were discovered in the parking lot of the Exeter Community Library in Exeter Township Friday.

“It’s very unfortunate that they either don’t know or that they just don’t care,” said Mallory Hoffman, an employee at the library.

Staff members contacted police and firefighters who washed away the graffiti. Police launched an investigation but no one came forward. Finally on Monday, workers at the library found a letter inside the book depository which stated the following:

We are three stupid teenagers apologizing for our heinous acts against the Exeter Community Library. We are the ones who drew inappropriate images in shaving cream in the parking lot, and we are sincerely sorry. It is only now that we realize how stupid are (sic) acts were, we did not attend (sic) to hurt anyone or offend anyone. In this envelope we have enclosed fifty dollars, which we hope is enough to cover any damages, again we realize now how stupid this is and how much a generosity this library has actually been to the Community. This will never happen again, on our terms, and again we are greatly sorry, please find it in our community to forgive us. We are trying to make this right and again never meant to intentionally hurt or offend anyone. We realize that the swastika symbol can be considered a symbol of hate especially since the Holocaust and we realize how honestly irresponsible this was, we all have religious roots and did not intentionally mean this as any form of hate speech or dislikeness (sic) towards any culture. Again we wish to formally apologize.

Sincerely,

Three irresponsible teenagers apologizing for their immature acts.

We are incredibly sorry.

True to their word, the “three stupid teenagers” had also placed $50 in cash inside the envelope.

“At best it was a thoughtless prank,” said Bill Franklin, the president of the Jewish Federation of Reading. “The keyword is thoughtless.”

Franklin told NBC10 that education about history can sometimes prove to be eye-opening.

“Like the letter says they will not do anything like this again so that’s three people whose lives have been changed,” Franklin said.

This month’s featured book at the Exeter Community Library is “Rose Under Fire,” a story about the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Staff members are hoping the teen vandals stop by at the library and learn more about the history of the holocaust.

“Books, they’re here, they’re everywhere,” Hoffman said. “They can help you put yourself in somebody else’s shoes.”

The library is donating the $50 to the Anti-Defamation League. Police continue to search for the vandals.

Biker hands out anti-Semitic cartoons
By Daniel Prendergast, Shari Logan and Ruth Brown

A motorbike rider literally delivered a message of hate around Orthodox Williamsburg when he handed out flyers featuring swastikas and anti-Semitic cartoons from the back of his hog — dampening locals’ spirits in the middle of Passover. :D

“It’s painful to see that during Passover. It’s always painful,” whined Williamsburg native Moses Moskowitz, 25, who didn’t see the incident firsthand. “It brings back memories from my parents and grandparents who saw those things during WWII.”

As many as 100 people were gathered at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Rodney Street on Thursday at around 9:30 pm when the bigoted biker  wearing a black helmet roared up and started passing out the hateful propaganda, according to police and witnesses.

The flyers featured the Nazi symbol alongside racist cartoons and captions describing Jews as “born nation-wreckers” who are perpetuating the “Holocaust myth.” :)

“Qvickly! Qvickly! Ve must keep ze lid on! Ze truth is gedding out!” one man wearing a Star of David is shown saying. :p

Onlookers were shocked by what they saw, according to Moses Bondo, 55, who manages the nearby Lee Rodney Food Center and witnessed the aftermath.

“With grim faces, they were asking, ‘Why people would do that? Why people would spend the holiday to spread hate?'” he said.

But members of the community have put the hateful act behind them and returned to their Passover celebrations, he added.

“It’s an incident that went by fast and it’s quiet. Now everyone resumes to their holiday to enjoy it,” he said.

Police are still investigating the incident, and have notified the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force.

Woman horrified to find swastikas on her new tea towels

A New Jersey woman nearly gifted her Jewish best friend a set of Cynthia Rowley tea towels — until she realized they were stamped with black swastikas.

Natalja Maxwell purchased the two-pack of Paris-themed towels for $5.99 from a Marshalls & HomeGoods in Secaucus on April 11, thinking they were perfect as a Passover gift. :p

“They looked so pretty. I love Paris,” she said.

But when Maxwell got home, she noticed the hate symbols  in the middle of one of the towel’s windmill designs (inset), right beside whimsical Eiffel towers and bicycles.

“It’s like six, seven, eight [wind]mills on the towel and a huge swastika,” said Maxwell, 45, who lives in Paramus. “Not tiny — like huge, big-sized swastikas.”

Maxwell didn’t return the set because she didn’t want the possibility of it being sold to another *unwitting customer.

She instead filed letters of complaint with Marshalls, Cynthia Rowley and the Anti-Defamation League but never heard back from them.

“We don’t need money, we’re just trying to tell them, ‘Don’t sell this stuff, it’s gross,’ ” she said.

TJX, the parent company of Marshalls and HomeGoods, told The Post it’ll pull the towels off its shelves and destroy them.

“We sincerely regret the offense this has caused,” the company said in a statement.

Jewish Man Finds Shorts With Swastika While Shopping At Goodwill
May 24, 2017 10:59 PM

PASADENA (CBSLA) — It was the ultimate symbol of hate sewn into a pair of shorts.:)

A swastika appeared at a Pasadena Goodwill store in front of the wrong person. Vadim Kolosov came upon them as he was doing some summer shopping.

“Oh, this looks like weird, and I see this eagle and swastika, and I was really surprised,” Kolosov said.

Kolosov said he looked for a label in the shorts, but there was no brand name, just the eagle and swastika.

swastika2.jpg

Kolosov is Jewish and originally from Russia. The swastika is a symbol that touches him on a deeply personal level.

“For me, my grandmother’s brothers died during the war – my great-grandfather was fighting against Nazis,” Kolosov said.

Society Hill Neighbors Appalled After Vandal Spray Paints Swastika
July 3, 2017 8:37 PM

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –When someone painted a swastika on a city trash can along a busy stretch of Spruce Street near 3rd Street, the graffiti did not stop there.

“That was pretty offensive and I was pretty surprised to see that in my neighborhood,” said neighbor (((Stuart Malcolm))), who lives right across from where the trash can was tagged.

Malcolm said another person apparently came by and crossed out the swastika in yet red, and yet a third person used white paint to scribble an obscenity and the words “Nazi Punks.”

“We have a fair number of Jewish people who live in the neighborhood,” Malcolm said “So I can understand why they’d be incredibly offended by it. We also have synagogue just around the corner, so yeah it’s a pretty offensive thing to see.”

At this time of year a lot of people traffic the area where the swastika was painted. Many walk or drive along Spruce to get to and from Harbor Park for fireworks.

CBS 3 called police about the Nazi vandalism, and the department sent out two officers. They said there are no other signs of hate speech sprayed in the area.

About two hours later, a city clean-up worker scrubbed away the offensive  graffiti.

Pasquale Vargas

An angry racist pleaded guilty in Manhattan Criminal Court to drawing swastikas in bathrooms at Penn Station — and then had to be restrained when The Post asked him a question on his way out of court.

Pasquale Vargas , 65, scowled as pleaded guilty Wednesday to criminal mischief as a hate crime and attempted criminal mischief in the fourth degree.

He was accused of drawing eight swastikas in the transit hub’s bathrooms in February.

Vargas, who faces as much as six months in prison, looked angry during the hearing — and grew angrier when questioned outside of court.

“What do you want from me? Why do you want to f–k with me?” Vargas lashed out at a Post reporter who asked why he drew the swastikas. Vargas, who was flailing his arms, had to be held back by a court officer and his lawyer.

He was busted in March after MTA cops caught him on video surveillance leaving a previously clean bathroom stall that then had hate graffiti in it, authorities said.

Cops also suspected Vargas of writing “KKK” and “Mexican Go Home” on station walls.

A hateful vandal etched nearly 30 swastikas into wet cement in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, authorities said Monday.

Surveillance video shows the suspect using his finger to carve the symbols into the cement on the side walk of a residential stretch of Newkirk Avenue in Midwood during the early morning hours Saturday.

The vandalism was discovered by a local resident Monday, officials said.

The video was turned over to police, who have not officially released the footage. The video was made public by state Assemblyman Dov Hikind’s office.

Police said the incident is being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force.

The vandalism may be related to a prior dispute that happened last week between a motorist and some workmen who had to temporarily block traffic as they were working, police said.

Police Make Arrest After Swastikas Found In Coatesville; Suspect Wanted In Delaware
August 23, 2017 11:55 PM

COATESVILLE, Pa. (CBS/AP) — Police have arrested a man they say is responsible for spray-painting graffiti including swastikas and racial epithets in several places near Philadelphia.

Authorities in Coatesville said the vandalism early Tuesday damaged the outside of a convenience store, a Mercedes Benz and a garage door.

Officials said the person responsible then apparently went into neighboring Valley Township and left similar graffiti on street signs and the roadway.

On Wednesday night arrested George Rissell, 24, of Coatesville.

Rissell is accused of vandalizing a total of five locations within the city, and three outside of the city in Valley Township that were discovered with the cooperation of the Valley Township Police Department.

He is facing multiple counts of ethnic intimidation and criminal mischief.

Cpl. Shawn Dowds of the Coatesville police force called it “shocking” and said “That’s never happened here before.”

In Delaware, police say a swastika and several racial epithets were found spray-painted on a car in the 600 block of Bayard Ave.

No arrests have been in connection with this incident.

This subway rider is freaking out his fellow straphangers by openly wearing a swastika necklace.

The man, who was photographed at the Queensboro Plaza station last week, proudly wore the hate symbol around his neck while he waited for a train.

Craig Lenti, 39, of Astoria, who snapped the photo of the older man, said when he saw the swastika around the man’s neck, he didn’t want to believe it.

“I was disgusted, but I couldn’t believe what I saw, so I walked back and forth past him a couple of times to make sure that’s what it was and there started snapping pictures,” he said.

Lenti took the photos to draw attention to potential neo-Nazis in New York.

“As New Yorkers, we get complacent and think that it doesn’t happen here,” he said. “But it does happen here, and we have to look out for it.”

Lenti posted the photo on Instagram, garnering comments from angry New Yorkers.

“He’s gonna catch a beatdown walking around with that,” wrote newyorkdylan. “Can’t say I feel bad.”

Hate crime in the subway system has shot up by 136 percent from a year ago, according to stats kept by the NYPD. Much of that uptick in hate crime this year has been in the form of people drawing swastikas on trains and platforms, say cops.

Court records: Man charged with spray-painting swastika at UMD is African American

Updated: Oct 10 2017 12:05AM EDT

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Court records show the man accused of spray-painting a swastika inside a residence hall at the University of Maryland in September is African American.

Students were surprised to learn someone who is a member of a race which has been historically oppressed is accused of the hate-related incident.

"I guess it proves that you don't have to be a certain race to hate people, but I mean, it's just you would think that someone, especially from a race that has been subjected to hate before, you would think why would you want to reciprocate that to somebody else," said student Abby Gorun.

University of Maryland police say 52-year-old Ronald Alford Sr. was served a criminal summons on Thursday and faces several charges including destruction of property and disturbing the operations of a school. Alford will not be allowed back on campus.

Officials discovered the swastika painted on a trash cart at Hagerstown Hall, a residence hall on campus, on September 27.

A receipt with a swastika was discovered on Travers Jewelers' window.

An Upper East Side jewelry store was the target of two recent hate crimes, police and the owner say.

Travers Jewelers on Madison Avenue near 76th Street received a letter Oct. 4 that read, “Make America Great Again, Judenraus, N—–s and F—–s burn in hell.” It was accompanied by a picture of a Nazi flag.

The incident was not reported to cops until Sunday afternoon, when a receipt sticker with a swastika drawn on it was discovered on the store window.

Shop owner Sam Kassin, 68 attributed the act to “Trump” and “all this anti-Semitic stuff.”

He said the suspect was caught on camera Saturday night.

Kassin described the suspect as “a gray-haired fellow, kind of hunched over, looked to be in his 70s or 80s.”

On why his store might have been targeted, Kassin said, “Well, we’re closed on Saturdays,” referring to the Jewish Sabbath.

The NYPD Hate Crimes unit is currently investigating.

The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force was investigating the disturbing acts on 52nd Street near 17th Avenue in the Borough Park neighborhood.

The cars targeted were a black Ford sedan and silver Lexus SUV.

“We trust that the police will find who did it. We’re a close community and we’re not going to tolerate this one bit,” said a 35-year-old neighbor named Israel.

“We’re working with cops to give them any surveillance video or information they might need.”

Cops are on the hunt for a hateful vandal who scratched a swastika into the wall of an NYU building — where the anti-Semitic symbol has appeared four times in fewer than two months , law enforcement sources said Friday.

A janitor found the repulsive scrawl on a wall and a picture frame in a student lounge on the second floor of the school’s Lipton Hall at 33 Washington Square West on Thursday, the sources said.

Police are probing whether the swastika is the work of a repeat offender because the symbol has popped up at the same address on three other recent occasions.

On Jan. 3, a vandal drew a swastika on a bulletin board on the 11th floor of the building. Another swastika was scrawled on a second-floor computer desk computer Jan. 31. A third appeared on a second-floor couch on Feb. 15, law enforcement sources said.
