CONWAY, S.C. -- A South Carolina man has been sentenced to three years in prison for having sex with a horse.

Multiple media outlets report that Rodell Vereen was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to buggery. A judge also ordered Vereen to get counseling and stay away from the Lazy B stables when he's released.

Authorities charged Vereen after a woman set up a surveillance camera and caught him on tape having sex with her horse in July. Horse owner Barbara Kenley says she staked out the stable and caught Vereen sneaking into the barn days later, holding him at shotgun point until police arrived.

Kenley had seen Vereen before. He pleaded guilty last year to having sex with the same horse and was put on probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A South Carolina man who twice pleaded guilty to having sex with a horse has been released from prison after 16 months and ordered to stay away from the stable where the animal lives.

Probation officials said Monday that Rodell Vereen, 51, was let out of prison March 1.

Vereen must complete two years of probation or he will have to finish the five-year sentence he received in November 2009 after pleading guilty to buggery and trespassing. The Sun-News of Myrtle Beach first reported Vereen's release.

Vereen was arrested after the owner of the horse staked out her stable and caught Vereen sneaking inside. She held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

The owner said she spent several nights in the barn after catching Vereen having sex with the animal on surveillance tapes. She feared he had returned because her horse was acting strange and getting infections again. She also noticed dirt and hay piled up near the horse's stall in Longs, about 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach.

Vereen was caught having sex with the same horse in late 2007 and was on probation from that incident when he was arrested a second time, authorities said.

The owner of the horse didn't immediately return a message from The Associated Press on Monday, but her husband said she knew Vereen was out of prison and she was scared he would come back to their stables.

A phone number for Vereen couldn't be found. Before he pleaded guilty, he told Myrtle Beach television station WMBF-TV he was sorry if he hurt the horse or anyone else. He said he wasn't taking his medicine for schizophrenia when he went to the stables and promised to keep taking his medicine when he got out of prison.

Vereen also must continue to register as a sex offender.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A woman found a man naked in her bed with a machete just hours after he bit off a piece of another woman’s ear during an assault, police said.

Tristan Marcelus Vereen, 32, is charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree assault and battery.
Officers responded to a local hospital Tuesday night to interview a woman who said she was assaulted by Vereen, an Horry County police report states.

The woman said between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m., she was at Vereen’s house and saw him smoke what she believed to be “wet,” according to the report.
The National Institutes of Health says “wet” is slang for marijuana dipped or laced with other substances, typically formaldehyde, PCP or both.

According to the report, the woman tried to leave the home about five minutes after Vereen smoked but he stopped her. Vereen allegedly pushed her to the ground and hit her in the head several times. The 32-year-old then bit the woman multiple times, managing to chew off a piece of her ear, the report states.

The woman eventually unlocked the door, exited the home and screamed for help. Police said one of Vereen’s family members drove her to the hospital.

At around 4 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a home on Sandridge Loop for a burglary call. A woman said she found a man, identified as Vereen, lying in her bed naked, according to the report. The woman reported that Vereen lives nearby but was not allowed inside the home.

Police said a witness entered the house to find Vereen in bed with a machete and kitchen knife. The witness reported that he and his brother then tossed Vereen out of the home, the report states.

Vereen was arrested a short distance away from the woman’s home after police reportedly found him in the woods naked. Police said Vereen appeared to be under the influence of a “substance.”

Vereen is currently being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
