EAST LANSDOWNE, Pa. (CBS) -- An intense recovery effort is underway at the East Lansdowne, Delaware County, home that burned down after two officers were shot.

So far the remains of three members of the Le family, who were inside the home at the time of the fire and shooting, have been recovered, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said on Thursday. The other three family members are still unaccounted for.

The events that unfolded inside the home on Lewis Avenue in East Lansdowne are still hard to fathom, and for the woman who says she is the mother of the shooter, it's something she could've never imagined.

Chin Le, who didn't want to speak on camera, says her son is the man who is believed to be behind the shooting and fire. She spoke to CBS Philadelphia using her family doctor, Khanh Che, to speak on her behalf.

Che detailed what she told him went on inside the home before she and her husband, Huong Le, escaped.

Ray Strickland: "Did she tell you how they got out?"
"No. No. Suddenly it happened so fast. Nobody knows what's happening. Suddenly he's upset and used the gun," Che said.

Che says Chin Le's son, Khan Le, was in an argument with his 10-year-old nephew before the shooting started.

Chin Le says he shot five people, including three children, before he killed himself.

"Very sad, very sad. That's why I tried to help her," Che said.

The Le family said they moved from Vietnam more than 40 years ago and have been living in East Landsdowne ever since.

Chin Le says her son, Khan Le, was 44 years old, recently divorced and was out of work.

"I asked her about her son, any medical problem? Any mental problem? She says he's OK – completely normal," Che said.

EAST LANSDOWNE, Pa. (CBS) -- The search continues Friday for the remains of three other people after a shooting and fire on Lewis Avenue in East Lansdowne, Delaware County.

The remains of three people have been recovered from the home, District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said Thursday.

Stollsteimer said the three remains recovered were two adults and one child.

Three other members of the Le family, who were inside when the fire consumed the home, are unaccounted for. Earlier in the day, Stollsteimer said all six family members, including three children, were presumed dead.

At a press conference Thursday, the DA described the ongoing recovery mission for the missing family members as "gruesome."

A rifle was also found in the house, Stollsteimer said.

Recovery operations were suspended for the night on Thursday due to safety concerns. Efforts will likely continue Friday once the sun comes up.

"We're a little bit afraid of the walls caving in, so we're going bring some other some other equipment out tomorrow morning to try to brace the building a little more," Stollsteimer said. "We don't people to be in there if we're afraid that they're not safe."

Authorities also identified Thursday the two police officers hurt by gunfire in the shooting and fire. The officers are Lansdowne police officer David Schiazza and East Lansdowne police officer John Meehan.

Schiazza, 54, is a 22-year veteran of the Lansdowne Police Department. He was shot in the leg and was released from a hospital Thursday afternoon.

Meehan, 44, has also been an officer for 22 years. He is still hospitalized and receiving treatment after being shot in the left arm and needing surgery.

Both officers were dragged to safety by officers from Upper Darby Township and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center after the shooting on Wednesday night.

Videos from neighbor Derrick Richardson showed one officer holding up a ballistic shield and running to the aid of a wounded officer.

Federal, state and local lawmakers toured the neighborhood and were given an update as people tried to wrap their heads around what happened.

"You know up and down emotionally, and you all were covering it live," Dr. Monica Taylor, the chair of the Delaware County Council, said. "The community and everyone is feeling this, right? We were watching it live as it was happening and our first responders were on scene, and as you see here all levels of government are supporting them."

Prosecutors say it may never be known who the shooter was, and dental records may be the only way to identify the victims.

A woman who claims to be the mother of the shooter spoke through her family doctor to reporters about how the incident unfolded and said it began with an argument with a child.

State Sen. Tim Kearney said state officials have been in contact with the William Penn School District due to the three children among the presumed dead.

"We understand that there were three children in the house, one in elementary school, one in middle school and one in high school," Kearney said. "On the state level, we've been in contact with the school district and offering to them whatever we can to help them move forward."

Authorities say all bodies in the home have been recovered.

"We think we have found everybody who was in that house, the Le family, we have recovered all members of that family," Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said.

Stollsteimer said one of the sets of remains recovered is Canh Le, who is believed to be the shooter.

"We knew from information provided by the grandparents early on in the investigation, he was the suspect for at least shooting one of the nieces, one of his nieces," the DA said.

Authorities said police received a 911 call before 4 p.m. Wednesday reporting an 11-year-old was shot. It's not clear who made that call or if that detail was even true - but when police arrived at the home on Lewis Avenue near Pembroke Avenue, officers started taking gunfire.

Two officers were hurt and dragged to safety before being taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Videos filmed by a neighbor showed one officer carrying a ballistic shield and running to another officer's aid.

During the encounter, the home caught fire. Firefighters were held back because the gunshots prevented them from being able to safely put out the flames, Stollsteimer said.

"My assumption is that the fire was started at some point after [Canh Le] probably killed members of the family. I could be completely wrong. The medical examiner is going to determine how these members of the family died," Stollsteimer said Friday.

Black smoke was seen rising into the air for hours as the fire burned out of control until police determined there was no longer any threat.

Two police officers were wounded in the shooting and both have already been released from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Remains of three people were recovered from the home on Thursday. On Friday, Stollsteimer said that all six bodies were recovered from the home.

The Delaware County medical examiner will now perform autopsies and help investigators determine how each member of the family died.

A partially melted rifle has been located inside the remnants of the charred home. Sources said it's the firearm that was used to shoot the two officers.

Investigators also said they may never know who the shooter was -- but as time goes on and interviews are conducted with other surviving members of the Le family as well as an analysis of evidence, the recovered rifle and a review of 911 calls -- there is the hope they'll be able to say who was responsible.

If Canh Le is identified as the person found next to the rifle, the criminal investigation will be closed, Stollsteimer added.

This entire incident has rocked the William Penn School District -- children from the Le family attended elementary, middle and high school.

The gravity of loss is setting in here in East Lansdowne.

Chin Le, a woman who claimed she was the mother of the shooter, identified him as Canh Le. She said he was in an argument with his 10-year-old nephew before the shooting started Wednesday afternoon.

The woman's family doctor, Dr. Khanh Che, stepped in and acted as interpreter in an interview Thursday.

Chin Le said Canh Le was 44 years old, recently divorced and out of work.

According to Che, Chin Le said her son shot five people, including three children, before he killed himself.

Investigators are still working to determine with certainty what happened and have not confirmed Chin Le's account.

Stollsteimer said he doesn't know the motive for the shooting but that investigators have spoken to the children's grandparents, who are still in shock.

"They don't really have any idea," Stollsteimer said of a possible motive. "He just went haywire."

This story has been updated with the correct spelling of Nakayla Le's name.
