Joseph Shane "Scrap" Bowling, 23, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019. Scrap was born in Wake County on November 13, 1996.
Robbers fatally shot 23-year-old Joseph Bowling, who reportedly stepped in front of a gun aimed at his mother, who worked at the store. The fatal shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. on November 14, at a Scotchman gas station near the intersection of NC Highway 210 and Interstate 40. While bleeding, Bowling chased the robbers out of the store and then collapsed. Bowling's stepfather said Bowling's mother held him when he took his last breath.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home at 11:00 am with the interment following at Pinecrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 20th from 6-8 pm at McLaurin Funeral Home.

He is survived by his mother and boyfriend, Pamela Stancil and Kevin Barnette; maternal grandmother, Jean Pearce; paternal grandmother, Mary Frances Bowling; father, Rex Bowling and wife Anita; brothers, Derek Bowling and wife Tammy, Dustin Bowling, Josh Bowling and wife Emily; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Bowling, Katelynn Bowling, Derek Bowling, Jr., Tyler Bowling, Ava Rae Bowling and J.C. Bowling. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Donald Pearce and Horace Bowling and an aunt, Brenda Atkinson. BENSON, N.C. (WNCN) – A 19-year-old suspect has been identified in the murder of a man whose family said was protecting his mother during the course of an armed robbery at a Johnston County gas station last week, the sheriff’s office said.

A man was shot to death during an armed robbery at a gas station in Benson Thursday morning (CBS 17)
Joseph Shane Bowling, 23, of Angier was killed early November 14 at Scotchman gas station, located at 1230 N.C. Highway 210, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
The family member who spoke with CBS 17 said that his brother and mother worked together at the gas station together.
Bowling’s family told CBS 17 said he tried to intervene during the robbery to defend his mother.
One of the suspects then fired shots inside the store, hitting and killing Bowling.
An investigation revealed Bobby Gene McLean Jr. as one of the multiple suspects involved in the incident.

McLean, who lives in the Selma/Kenly area, is not in custody.
He faces charges of murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Johnston County investigators believe the suspects responsible for robbing the Scotchman also hit two other businesses in the area.

Another arrest in murder of man protecting mom during robbery



JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Deputies arrested two men Thursday believed to be involved in the shooting of a man who died while protecting his mother at a gas station.
A week after the incident, officials said Bobby Mclean Jr. turned himself in at the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. Mclean was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Mclean is being held in the Johnston County Jail under no bond.
One of the suspects, Manuel Patterson, was in jail on a robbery charge when he was charged with murder and robbery at the Scotchman.
