A BABYSITTER arrested at Outjo in September 2017 after she was caught on camera abusing the baby in her care has been sentenced to an effective prison term of four and a half years.

The 40-year-old Nicoline Hoëses was sentenced on Thursday, a day after pleading guilty to charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and ill-treatment of a nine-month-old girl who had been in her care at Outjo.

The child was subjected to assaults and ill-treatment by Hoëses after she had been employed by the girl’s parents as a babysitter.

Magistrate Peingondjabi Shipo sentenced Hoëses in the Outjo Magistrate’s Court to four years’ imprisonment on the charge of attempted murder, an 18-month jail term for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, with that sentence ordered to be served concurrently with the sentence on the attempted murder charge, and to six months in prison for ill-treatment of a child. In effect, Hoëses was sent to prison for four and a half years.

Hoëses was arrested in September 2017, after the baby’s mother had set up a camera to record events taking place in the house where Hoëses was looking after her child. The camera was set up after the girl’s mother had noticed suspicious injuries on her child’s body.

Recordings made while the child was in Hoëses’ care showed her throwing the girl face down into her cot, picking her up by her feet and carrying her while swinging her by her ankles, beating her and smothering her cries.

The visuals were shared with the police and went viral on social media.

Hoëses was represented by legal aid lawyer Mbatemua Kahorongo, while public prosecutor Sean Nangombe represented the state. – Nampa/Own report
