OXFORD --Ole Miss football players Jamal Pittman and Ken Bournes were suspended indefinitely by coach David Cutcliffe on Monday following their arrests last weekend in Memphis.

Pittman, 21, and Bournes, 22, will not be allowed to attend the team's offseason workouts or visit the Rebels' training facility while Memphis police and officials at Ole Miss look into the incident.

According to the Shelby County Justice Inquiry Web site, Pittman is charged with one count of felony
eckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest stemming from his role in an altercation late Saturday night.

Court documents showed that he had not posted his $50,000 bail and is
r
scheduled for a court appearance on Wednesday.

Bourne
s, who is believed to have been with Pittman that night, was charged with a misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of a weapon. He posted a $1,000 bond, according to court documents.

It was not clear Monday evening whether either Pittman or Bournes was still being detained in Memphis following the arrests.

Cutcliffe released a statement through the school's sports information office Monday confirming that the two players were arrested. But the statement offered few other details regarding the incident.

A Memphis Police Department official contacted late Monday afternoon referred questions about cases to spokesman Robert Moore, who had already left for the day.

"We are gathering information surro
unding the events regarding the arrest of Jamal Pittman and Ken Bournes over the weekend," Cutcliffe said in the school's release. "At this time, they are suspended indefinitely from all
fo
otball related activities. As we gather information and assess the situation, we will then make a
further statement."

Attempts to reach Pittman and Bournes Monday were unsuccessful. Pittman could face up to two years in jail if convicted of the felony reckless endangerment, which is described in the Tennessee code as conduct which places or may place another person in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon.

The suspensions could leave Ole Miss without two of the team's top players as the Rebels prepare to report for the start of preseason practice on Aug. 8. Ole Miss opens the season at home on Sept. 4 against Memphis.

Pittman, a sophomore from Columbia, is one of the team's most popular players among Ole Miss fans despite his limited action due
to injury problems. The 6-2, 240-pound tailback was recovering from a second major knee surgery this offseason and was expected to factor into the backfield rotation.

Pittman, who tore
the AC
L in his left knee in a win last October over Arkansas State, was recently cleared to participate in full-contact drill
s when practice began.

Pittman, who also tore the ACL in his right knee in the spring of his redshirt freshman year 16 months ago, has rushed for 214 yards and a touchdown in five games.

Pittman spoke as recently as last week about getting his health and focus back together following his struggles with knee problems.

"It's been a rough summer and nothing has been easy for me," Pittman said in an interview with The Clarion-Ledger last week. "But I have myself together physically and spiritually now, and I'm just going to give this team all I have."

Bournes, a senior from Monticello, was listed as one of two starting linebackers coming out of s
pring drills. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound defender played in all 13 games last season and was the team's top returning pass rusher.

He was credited with 35 tackles, including ni
ne tackles
for losses, 31/2 quarterback sacks and a forced fumble during Ole Miss' 10-3 run.

The arrests of Pittman and Bournes brings the team's total to three players
who have had to deal with legal problems this offseason.

Ole Miss starting fullback Rick Razzano was arrested in April and is facing an October trial on four assault charges for his role in a brawl outside an Oxford bar.

Jamal Pittman's Hearing Postponed

MEMPHIS (AP) -- A preliminary hearing for Ole Miss running back Jamal Pittman has been rescheduled for August fourth in Memphis. The hearing was scheduled for today in Shelby County Criminal Court.

Authorities say Pittman waived a weapon at a group of people in a car Saturday night, then pointed the gun toward a Memphis police officer.

Pittman allegedly would not drop the pistol until officers closed in, struggle
with him and doused him with pepper spray. Pittman's attorney said in a statement that the athlete acted only because he felt threatened.

Besides felony reckless endangerment, Pittman is charge

d with misdemeanor resisting arrest. The incident occurred near the Beale Street entertainment dis
trict. There were no reports of injuries.

Pittman, a 21-year-old from Columbia, remains behind bars, pending the hearing.

Fellow player, linebacker Ken Bournes, faces a misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of a weapon stemmed from the same incident. He has posted a one-thousand-dollar bond and has been released from jail.
