MARSHVILLE, NC (WBTV) - Police have arrested a man accused of leading officers on a high-speed chase through Union County late Tuesday night.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, troopers were conducting license checks on Monroe-Ansonville Road late Tuesday afternoon. A car approached and then attempted to get away from the checkpoint.

The highway patrol chased the car into Monroe. The sheriff's office says Roderick Crowder, 27, did a U-turn and led police on a chase back into the county until he spun out at the corner of Bobwhite Circle and Monroe-Ansonville Road.

Crowder jumped from the car and cops chased him into the woods. The search continued for about two hours. K-9 units, blood hounds and officers from the Union County Sheriffs Office along with the CMPD helicopter assisted in the search, but they were unable to locate him.

Crowder was arrested on Wednesday and he was charged with driving without a license, driving left of center, failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving and speeding.

Police are trying to determine if Crowder has any connection to a homicide which happened in Marshville earlier this week.

Mitchell Gene Griffin Jr., 24, died after crashing his car on US Highway 74 on Monday at 12:34 a.m. When police arrived at the crash scene, they said Griffin had been shot prior crashing his vehicle. No suspect has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting.

Crowder is being held in the Union County jail.

Stephon Hadley was arrested after crashing his SUV into some north Tulsa woods. His wife was injured in the accident.

TULSA, OK -- A passenger was hospitalized and the driver arrested after a man crashed his SUV into the woods of North Tulsa. The accident happened at about 4 a.m. Saturday in the 3800 block of North Peoria.

Police at the scene said the car was traveling too fast south on Peoria when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It skidded across the road and landed in some trees, just missing a utility pole.

Witnesses at the scene said three people were in the car when it crashed. Police say the vehicle left 231 feet of skid marks before striking the curb and continuing over 50 feet into the trees.

Tulsa police arrested the driver, 25-year-old Stephon Raynard Hadley of Tulsa. He was booked on complaints of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, speed greater than posted and no driver's license.

Police say Hadley's wife, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was severely injured in the wreck. It was not clear at the accident scene whether she had been ejected or crawled out of the car after it crashed.

Tulsa fire worked the scene of the wreck, which was complicated by the heavily wooded area.

The third occupant of the car left on foot.

Bail was denied today for Ralph Eubanks, accused of driving under the influence of drugs when he slammed into a mother and her young son as they crossed a quiet street in Rogers Park, killing the woman and seriously injuring the boy.

Eubanks then sped off, leaving Maria Worthon, 49, and her son Jeremia lying in the road, officials said.

Eubanks, 30, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Prosecutors said today in court that traces of cocaine and ecstasy were found in his system after the crash.

During a bond hearing today, an attorney for Eubanks said his family, who came to the hearing, wanted to say that "our prayers go out to the Worthons and her son."

Eubanks hit Worthon and Jeremia as they crossed the narrow, car-lined street in the 7000 block of North Greenview Avenue around 9 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Worthon, a Fiji native, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jeremia was taken to a hospital in critical condition. His family said he had a broken leg and was breathing with the aid of a respirator.

Worthon's family said police estimated the car was traveling as fast as 80 mph.

About a minute before the collision, prosecutors said in court today, police had stopped Eubanks for driving without his headlights on. He took off before the officers could complete the stop, they said.

Eubanks was taken into custody in the 6400 block of North Newgard Avenue, a little more than a half-mile south of the crash site, police said.

Most wanted jig arrested after traffic stop

Boo boon to more charges after crash victim dies

Jailed Palm Bay jig may get more years: Manslaughter charges loom after crash victim dies from 3-year-old wounds

A 23-year-old mud already serving prison time for a traffic crash almost three years ago involving a police chase now faces manslaughter charges after a woman died in September as a result of injuries from the collision.

BernardBooJohnson_138126k.jpg

Bernard "Boo" Johnson, an inmate at the Calhoun Correctional Institution in Blountstown, was charged with manslaughter in November after officials linked the woman's death to injuries suffered in a May 2007 police pursuit. Johnson was the woman's boyfriend, family members said.

The one-time Palm Bay resident will have a Feb. 10 hearing on the new charge.

Prosecutors point out that there is no statute of limitations, nor set time period, for any criminal offense involving death to be brought to trial.

"It's still hard but I feel that they should," pursue the additional charges, said Jeanette Gowins, the mother of Joceyln A. Gowins, the crash victim.

"There was another couple in the car with them and what they tell me is that my daughter begged for him to stop and to let her out. That just sticks out in my mind because I wasn't able to be there to protect my child."

Johnson was originally charged with DUI with serious bodily injury, reckless driving and aggravated fleeing and eluding along with several traffic violations stemming from the 2007 case. He was to be released from prison in 2020, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Melbourne police had initially attempted to pull Johnson in his tan Mercury over for a traffic stop when he led patrol officers on a chase from U.S. 1 to Palm Bay Road and Babcock Street, officials said. Patrol officers at one point used spiked strips to flatten the Mercury's tires, officials reported.

Police reported that Jocelyn Gowins, a nursing student, was thrown from the vehicle after it crashed into a Chevy Suburban and suffered severe head trauma during the incident.

She was rushed to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne but never recovered from her injuries, officials said.

"She couldn't move or anything," said Jeanette Gowins, who lives in Melbourne. "I would walk into the room and call her name. She would open her eyes but couldn't turn."

Gowins said she had hoped that Johnson, who has Jocelyn's name tattooed on his right arm, would have apologized for his actions in court.

"He didn't open his mouth to say anything," Jeanette Gowins said. "I really looked for him to say he was sorry, but he didn't."

"She was a hard worker, ambitious. I just thought he was living a different life that I didn't want my daughter to be involved in."

Johnson is being held at the Brevard County Detention Center until the hearing.

Stolen Car Destroys Half of Savannah Home

Contoria Ward says he was sleeping about 11 p.m.Saturday night when he heard a loud boom in the home he rents in the 2400 block of Ogeechee Road. “I was in a daze, like it was a dream of something,“ he tells me. “Then the police were at my door.“

He says when he came outside he saw an SUV had hit the side of the home, wiping out the dining room and damaging the foundation. “My bedroom was on the other side of the house,“ he says.

Clyde McFearin, whose wife owns the home, surveyed the damaged Sunday afternoon. “It looks like some of the place was just picked up and moved,“ he says.

McFearin says they have insurance but he has no idea how much will be necessary to repair the home. Meanwhile, Ward, who was just laid off from his job, says he has no place to live. He’s hoping for help from the American Red Cross.

This story doesn’t end with the crash.

The car that hit that home was stolen from the St Paul AME church earlier Saturday night.

The man who police say stole the car, Michael Jerome Jackson, was being tailed by undercover officers when he tried to speed away and ran into the home.

Jackson, who is a convicted felon, was also carrying a gun that was reported stolen in Rincon back in August.

He is in Chatham County Jail tonight facing a variety of charges.

Jackson was charged with theft by receiving stolen property-auto, theft by receiving stolen property-gun, reckless driving, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

NEWARK -- A city man was taken into custody this afternoon after he led police on a car chase that ended when he struck four cars and injured a motorist, according to authorities and eyewitnesses.

The incident unfolded shortly after 2:30 p.m. when police tried to conduct a motor vehicle stop of a stolen metallic blue Chrysler 300 near Muhammad Ali Avenue and Somerset Street, said Detective Todd McClendon. The accused driver, 29-year-old Shaheed Greene of Newark, drove off and led police on a brief pursuit.

Witnesses said Greene led police down the wrong direction of one-way University Avenue, near The Star-Ledger headquarters, and struck two cars, a late-model Honda Civic, smashing its front, and a white Ford Focus that came away with a dent on its rear bumper.

The Chrysler then crashed into a parked red Camaro on the side of the road, witnesses said. They said they saw a young man run out of the Chrysler and flee into the University Court apartment complex, followed by six city police officers.

Police arrested the suspect after a brief foot pursuit, McClendon said. Greene was charged with aggravated assault, receiving stolen property and eluding police.

A man injured in the collision was transported to University Hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, McClendon said. He was the occupant of the Honda Civic that was severely damaged in the chase, witnesses said.
