Nig Confesses to Detroit Prostitute Killings.....sort of

Detroit police said Tuesday that a man had confessed to killing 7 prostitutes over the last several years. A tipster led police to Shelly Andre Brooks who was recognized after the release of a composite sketch.

Police say Brooks felt the women ripped him off. In his confession, they say he claimed that is why he killed the women.

"I didn"t confess, they made me sign," Brooks told reporters as he was taken, in shackles, to a waiting vehicle Tuesday.

Detroit homicide investigators and a violent crimes task force, consisting of Detroit police, the FBI and Michigan State Police have been investigating this string of prostitute murde
rs for years.

Brooks was recognized by a tipster who saw a composite sketch made after a woman escaped a failed assault by a man fitting Brooks" description.

"DNA connects Brooks to multiple cases," said Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings.

Police say they have DNA matches to Brooks in at least 4 of the murder cases.

He was expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon on 7 counts of premeditated murder as well as 7 counts of felony murder.

Brooks remains a suspect in the deaths of 7 additional prostitutes.

Police say all 7 of the women Brooks is accused of killing were drug users and ranged in age from 30 to 53.

Detroit - A man was charged Tuesday in the slayings of seven prostitutes in Detroit between 2001 and June of this year.

Shelly Andre Brooks faces seven counts of premeditated murder and seven counts of felony murder. The 37-year-old Detroit resident faces a sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of any of the counts.

Brooks remains a suspect in the deaths of seven other prostitutes. Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said the other seven killings were “very similar,” but she declined to comment further.

g were drug users and ranged in age from 30 to 53. All were raped and killed by blunt-force trauma.

Their bodies were found on the city's east side, some in buildings and others in vacant lots.

Brooks has been in custody since July 30 and was being held in connection with a sexual assault of a prostitute. He was to be arraigned later Tuesday on the murder charges.

A Wayne County jury convicted a suspected serial killer of first-degree murder today in connection with the 2002 killing of a prostitute. Jurors deliberated for 10 hours over two days before convicting Shelly Brooks, 38, of Detroit for the slaying of Pamela Greer.

Greer’s body was found in an abandoned apartment building on Detroit’s east side in February of 2002. She was bludgeoned to death, prosecutors said. Police and prosecutors have said that Brooks could be responsible for killing as many as seven prostitutes on the city’s east side between 1999-2005. “We finally have a dangerous predator off the streets and a few people can sleep easier tonight,” said Detroit police officer Mike Carlisle, a homicide investigator who worked on the suspected serial killer cases.
