Hospitalized suspect escapes

Miami-Dade police are looking for an armed robbery suspect who escaped from Pan American Hospital on Wednesday morning while his guard took a bathroom break.

Juan Ramon Hernandez, 28, of 8750 NW 32nd Ct. in Miami, was seen running south from the hospital, where he was taken Friday after complaining of chest pains. He was wearing a white shirt and gray pants.

Hernandez, who also uses the name Rodolfo Salinas, was scheduled to have a procedure performed Wednesday, hospital offic
als said. They would not say what it was.

Miami-Dade Corrections is investigating how Hernandez escaped from the hospital, 5959 NW Seventh St. A nurse took his vital signs at 4:15 a.m., corrections s
pok
swoman Janelle Hall said.

Then the officer guarding him took a b
athroom break. ''When he returned from the restroom break, the inmate was discovered missing,'' Hall said.

''He's not free like any other patient in the hospital,` said Hall. ``We're investigating if he was shackled properly and, if so, how did he escape from those shackles,'' Hall said.

Hernandez was arrested on May 1 after being charged with four counts of armed robbery and one of false imprisonment, jail records show.

Details of that case were not available.

Anyone with information should call Miami-Dade police at 305-471-2826 or 305-471-2814 or Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
