We've heard of stool pigeons, but never a stool parrot.
Three burglars were arrested after they went back into a home to snatch a parrot they feared could identify them, police said Tuesday.
Mark Martin, 18, Dallas Davis, 25, and Jarrin Hicks, 21, were charged Monday with aggravated burglary and evading arrest.
Memphis police say they ransacked a home in the 5100 block of Lexie in Whitehaven Monday morning, making off with DVD players, computers, radios, TVs and other electronic gear.
But after loading the loot into the getaway car, one of the suspects realized a parrot in the home had heard him using the nickname "JJ" -- and that the bird had started repeating the na
me.
As the men fetched the would-be informant's cage, a neighbor called
police, who arrived as the three were speeding away.
A few blocks later, their car crashed into an iron gate on Waldrup.
They ran, but not far. Police found Davis hiding in a garbage bin.
When the car crashed, the parrot's cage broke. The bird flew the coop and hasn't been seen since.
Cops were left, once again, scratching their heads -- and laughing -- about criminal behavior.
"They were afraid the bird would 'stool' on them," Maj. Billy Garrett said. "They actually believed he could identify them."
And victim Felicia Cobbs and her kids still hope to find their missing pet.
The 6-year-old bird is described as a foot tall, has light green feathers and answers to the name "Marshmallow."
