NACO, Ariz. -- A pair of U.S. Border Patrol agents were reportedly assaulted by a suspected drug smuggler on Monday.

Following the incident, a 41-year-old Mexican national is in the custody of the federal government and more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana was seized, according to an agency spokesman.

The two agents, assigned to the Naco Station, attempted to stop a 2000 Ford Excursion on Naco Highway, approximately two miles north o
the Naco, Ariz., Port of Entry, but the driver failed to yield and sped off in an effort to evade arrest, a press release from the agency's Tucson Sector stated Thursday.

Temporarily losing sig
ht o
f the vehicle, the agents re-encountered the Ford stuck in a ditch
at the intersection of Friend and Martinez streets.

The driver had fled the vehicle but inside the Excursion, which apparently is not stolen, were 42 bundles of marijuana weighing, 1,182 pounds with an estimated value of $945,600.

Agents manning the Naco Station Radio Communications Center used Remote Video Surveillance Systems cameras and found an image of the driver fleeing the abandoned vehicle and that information was relayed to the agents on the scene.

A U.S. Border Patrol helicopter in the area was dispatched and assisted in locating the suspect.

As the two agents on the ground approached, the man reportedly became violent and assaulted the agents forcing them to subdue him with pepper spray
. Neither agent was injured.

The driver, the vehicle and the marijuana were turned over to the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration.
