Farm attack, farmer doused with petrol, set alight, escapes after firing shots, Koffiefontein

SAT - South Africa WC - October 13, 2020
A farm attack took place on Monday 12 October 2020, at 13:45, in Koffiefontein, in the Free State province of South Africa. A farmer, Andries Myburgh (31), was attacked by two men while eating lunch on the farm Vandermerwesdam between Koffiefontein and Petrusburg. He had gone outside to investigate when he smelled smoke. The attackers overpowered him, hit him over the head and a struggle ensued. The attackers then poured petrol over him and set him alight. Myburgh managed to pull out his firearm and fire off some shots :guns:

The shots caused the attackers to flee. Myburgh then jumped in his swimming pool to douse the flames on his clothes. He was lucky not to have been burnt to death or butchered in another disgusting manner because his firearm was in his possession.
Luckily Myburgh had a swimming pool in which he jumped to douse the flames on his body and he was not seriously injured. Myburgh’s warehouse was however burnt to the ground.
Myburgh was treated on the scene by paramedics. His neighbours and the Police responded but the suspects were not found.

Out of the 1 402 farm attacks and farm murder incidents recorded by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the past four years (from 2019 to 2022), convictions have so far been made in only 66 cases.
This means that more than 95% of all these atrocities are still unsolved. These and other shocking figures regarding the arrest and prosecution of suspects involved in farm attacks and farm murder incidents that took place from 2019 to 2022 are contained in an AfriForum report that was released today during a media conference in Pretoria.

The report shows, among other things, that not a single successful prosecution of farm murders was made in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the North West or the Northern Cape during the investigation period. “This despite the fact that the improvement of crime investigations and an increase in the number of prosecutions of all crimes committed in rural areas was set out as an explicit objective in the SAPS’ National Rural Safety Strategy (NRSS) that was implemented in 2019,” explains Johan Nortjé, AfriForum researcher and compiler of this report entitled “Rural injustice: The low prosecution rates for farm attacks and murders”.
“Weak investigative work, ineffective prosecutions and a clear unwillingness of the government to tackle rural safety and farm attacks in particular are probably the reason for these shocking findings,” explains Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety.

Police were called to a farmhouse near Glen and made a gruesome discovery of the bodies of an elderly couple about 300 meters away from the farmhouse with open wounds.

On Saturday 4 May 2024, a concerned neighbour called Glen police after he could not get hold of his fellow neighbours on their cellphones.
On arrival at the farm, police went to the farmhouse and discovered that the doors were left open. Upon entering the house, blood was found on the floor and the house was ransacked, but the elderly couple were not in the house.
Immediately, a multidisciplinary activation plan was implemented and a search for the suspects and both the elderly was launched through the night. The 76-year-old husband’s body was found about 300 meters away from the farmhouse, and his 73-year-old wife’s body was discovered in the septic tank at the farm. While the search continued, their vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, was found near Majwemasweu (Brandfort).
Preliminary investigations revealed that both victims suffered open wounds on the upper body and were certified dead at the scene. Tools and electronic items were stolen from the house
Glen police are investigating cases of house robbery and murder.
A manhunt is underway and so far no one has been arrested. Anyone who might have information is requested to contact Colonel Ben Bolsiek from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit on 082 466 8530, call the police crimeline on 08600 10111, or drop an anonymous tip off on the MySaps App.
