PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Eight Northeast High School students were shot in Philadelphia near a SEPTA bus station at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.

Bethel said the students are in the range of 15 to 17 years old. One of the students, a 16-year-old, was shot nine times in the torso and placed in critical condition. All of the other students are in stable condition, police said.

"Enough is enough," Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said. "Every law enforcement partner that we have here in the city of Philadelphia is actively engaged and working together to ensure that every resource that is needed is readily available so that the work can be done to solve the crimes."

Authorities are searching for three masked shooters who were inside a blue Hyundai sedan with paper tags, police sources said.

Bethel said as the students from Northeast High were getting onto the SEPTA bus, three shooters exited the vehicle near the Dunkin' and fired more than 30 shots.

Eleven juveniles have been shot in Philadelphia following Monday's shooting at a bus stop in Ogontz. Bethel said it's unclear if the two shootings are connected at this time.

"It is hard to sit here and see in three days and have 11 juveniles shot who were going and coming from school," said Bethel, who became the police commissioner after serving as the Chief of School Safety of the School District of Philadelphia. "The cowardly acts we've seen over the past three days are unacceptable. The fact that we've had this situation — where I've talked about it multiple times — the downstream impact when we don't address gun violence and don't address guns is what we see today."

SEPTA said a Route 18 bus and Route 67 bus were struck by gunfire in the area of Rising Sun Avenue and St. Vincent Street. According to SEPTA, no one on the bus was struck.

SEPTA Transit Police are reviewing video from the area and assisting Philly police in the investigation.

There's no word on any arrests or motive.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two of the four suspects wanted in the shooting that injured eight Northeast High School students are in custody, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said on Monday in a news conference.

Bethel said the two 18-year-old suspects, Jamaal Tucker and Ahnile Buggs, were both taken into police custody over the weekend and charged.

District Attorney Larry Krasner said Tucker and Buggs were charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault and other offenses.

Jamaal Tucker and Ahnile Buggs were both arrested in connection with a shooting that left eight Northeast High students injured.
Tucker turned himself in to police last Friday, Frank Vanore, the Deputy Commissioner of Investigations with the Philadelphia Police Department said. Vanore said Buggs was arrested by U.S. Marshals on Saturday in West Philly.

Police believe Buggs and Tucker were two of the four people inside the stolen Hyundai that fired more than 30 shots at a SEPTA bus stop at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues last week and injured eight Northeast High students.

Police declined to say Buggs and Tucker's involvement in the shooting. Police also didn't detail where the warrants were served. Law enforcement is urging people involved in the shooting to turn themselves in or contact police if they have information that could lead to an arrest.

The students shot were between the ages of 15 to 17 years old, police said. A 16-year-old, who was shot nine times, was initially placed in critical condition.

But Vanore said the 16-year-old has since been upgraded to stable condition and investigators plan to speak to the teen on Monday.

Before Wednesday's shooting, another shooting at a SEPTA bus stop in Ogontz left 17-year-old Imhotep Institute Charter High School student Dayemen Taylor dead.

Bethel said there might be a connection to the shootings on Monday, but that police "weren't ready to commit to that" and authorities are still investigating.

The FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshals are assisting Philly police in their investigation.

"This is a heinous crime and requires a full-court press," Bethel said.

How police caught Northeast Philadelphia shooting suspects

Hours after the shooting last week, police recovered a stolen Hyundai as a getaway car and another stolen vehicle in the city's Olney section.

Vanore said after recovering the vehicles, police were able to gather more evidence and develop suspects.

Last Friday, police served a search warrant at multiple locations and collected more evidence, which led to Tucker turning himself in to authorities, Vanore said.

Vanore said on Saturday with the help of U.S. Marshals, police served another search warrant and took Buggs into custody.

At the location of the search warrant, Vanore said police found a "40 caliber Glock 22 pistol with an extended magazine" that was "fully loaded." It also had a laser sight and a "Glock switch," Vanore said, meaning it was fully automatic.

Vanore said police found the gun matched multiple shell casings at the scene of the shooting at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues.

"We're not done," Vanore said. "We have other people that we need to contact. We know who they are. We're going to continue to move with our investigation towards not only those individuals but this group. Anyone who may have aided and assisted them, we're coming from them, too."

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A third suspect wanted in connection with the shooting in Philadelphia that injured eight Northeast High School students near a SEPTA bus stop was arrested Tuesday, sources said.

The U.S. Marshals arrested the third suspect, sources said.

On Monday, Philadelphia police announced the arrest of two suspects after they were taken into custody over the weekend.

Jamaal Tucker and Ahnile Buggs were both charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault and other offenses.

Police believe Buggs and Tucker were two of the four people inside the stolen Hyundai that fired more than 30 shots at a SEPTA bus stop at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues last week. Eight Northeast High School students were injured in that shooting.

Police said Tucker turned himself in last Friday and Buggs was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on Saturday in West Philadelphia.

Police declined to say Buggs and Tucker's involvement in the shooting. Law enforcement is urging people involved in the shooting to turn themselves in or contact police if they have information that could lead to an arrest.

The students shot were between the ages of 15 to 17 years old, police said. A 16-year-old, who was shot nine times, was initially placed in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

Police are still searching for a fourth suspect in the shooting. The FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshals are assisting Philly police in their investigation.

On Monday, Mayor Cherelle Parker vowed to be "unapologetic" in their pursuit of the remaining suspects in the case.

"I've heard you tell me you're afraid and concerned about riding SEPTA," Parker said on Monday. "You have told me that you have concerns about going to work, to school, to the store to get medicine, I need you to know that 'I hear you.' To the people of our city, we want you to know that we are unapologetic about engaging every partner available to assist us in these efforts during these very tough times."

Students at Northeast High returned to school this week after learning virtually last week following the shooting.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The final two suspects in the shooting at a SEPTA bus stop in Philadelphia that injured eight Northeast High School students were charged on Wednesday, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said. The alleged getaway driver was also hit with more charges.

The suspects, 19-year-old Jermahd Carter and 17-year-old Asir Boone, were each charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy, possession of an instrument of a crime and other offenses, the DA's office said.

Carter, who was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at a home in Northeast Philadelphia on Tuesday, is being held on $4 million bail and a stay-away order for his eight cases, according to the DA's office.

On Tuesday night, U.S. Marshals gave Boone an ultimatum to surrender but he never turned himself in, which led to law enforcement releasing his photo and offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

The two other suspects, 18-year-olds Jamaal Tucker and Ahnile Buggs, were both charged earlier this week after being taken into custody over the weekend. Tucker turned himself in to authorities last Friday.

Buggs is being held on $16 million bail and a stay away order for his eight cases, while Tucker is being held on a $16.1 million bail and a stay away order for his nine cases, the DA's office said.

Tucker allegedly was driving the stolen blue Hyundai used as the getaway car in the shooting. He was hit with additional charges, including receipt of stolen property and unauthorized use of an automobile, the DA's Office said.

Surveillance video last week showed Tucker allegedly driving the vehicle into a Dunkin' parking lot and then fleeing the scene after the other suspects fired more than 30 shots in the direction of the SEPTA bus stop at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues, injuring eight teens.

One of teens who was critically injured in the shooting has since been upgraded to stable, police said earlier this week.

The shooting marked the fourth straight day of violence on or near a SEPTA bus and left three dead and 10 others wounded.

Police used several ways to bring the suspects into custody, including surveillance video and cellphone activity.

Two officers were hailed heroes for their actions of applying tourniquets to students who were shot.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Asir Boone, the fourth suspect wanted in a shooting that injured eight Northeast High School students at a SEPTA stop earlier this month, was captured in Virginia.

U.S. Marshals said Boone, 17, was arrested in Alexandria, Virginia.

How U.S. Marshals captured Boone

U.S. Marshals said Boone was arrested around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment in the 700 block of Seaton Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia.

The agency said Boone was staying at the apartment with a woman with ties to Philadelphia.

"I hope this final arrest brings some comfort to the student victims of this senseless crime," Robert Clark, the supervisory deputy with the U.S. Marshals for the Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force, said. "No child should have to fear for their safety while receiving an education and I hope these arrests can subside that fear."

Boone wanted in Northeast Philadelphia bus stop shooting

Boone was wanted in connection with a shooting just before 3 p.m. at a SEPTA bus stop at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues in Northeast Philadelphia on Wednesday, March 6.

Police claimed three gunmen and a getaway driver in a stolen Hyundai fired more than 30 rounds at a SEPTA bus, injuring eight Northeast High School students.

Two SEPTA buses were caught in the crossfire. No one on board was injured.

Philadelphia police released surveillance video from a Dunkin' showing three gunmen running out of a Hyundai toward the bus stop and then driving away. Police initially said they were seeking three suspects but then added there was a getaway driver.

Police later recovered the stolen Hyundai in Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood.

Two weeks ago, police arrested 18-year-olds Jamaal Tucker and Ahnile Buggs for their alleged involvement in the shooting. Tucker turned himself in to police. Buggs was arrested by U.S. Marshals in West Philadelphia.

Police claimed a gun used in the shooting was recovered where Buggs was staying in West Philly.

A third suspect, 19-year-old Jermahd Carter, was arrested at a home on the 12000 block of Academy Road in the Parkwood section of Northeast Philadelphia.

All four suspects have been charged in connection with the shooting - all four are facing attempted murder charges.

Tucker is facing additional charges for allegedly being the getaway driver, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.

5th suspect arrested in connection with shooting that injured 8 Philadelphia teens near SEPTA bus stop

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A fifth suspect was arrested and charged on Thursday in connection with the shooting that wounded eight teens near a SEPTA bus stop in Northeast Philadelphia earlier in March, Deputy Commissioner of Investigations Frank Vanore said.

Vanore said the fifth suspect, 15-year-old Jeremiah Jefferson, was inside the Dunkin' near the shooting on March 6 and aided the other four suspects before they fired more than 30 shots at the SEPTA bus, striking eight Northeast High School students.

Jefferson will be charged with the same offenses as the other suspects, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime and more.

Vanore said investigators were able to link Jefferson to the shooting through new evidence by using surveillance video.

Jefferson was in communication with the four other suspects -- 17-year-old Asir Boone, 18 year olds Jamaal Tucker and Ahnile Buggs and 19-year-old Jermahd Carter -- before the shooting happened, Vanore said. Jefferson identified some people for Boone, Tucker, Buggs and Carter and even sent pictures to them while he was inside the Dunkin', Vanore said.

"The communication went back and forth," Vanore said.

Jefferson even texted the word "go" to the suspects as the group of Northeast High students walked toward the bus stop, Vanore said. That's when three of the suspects got out of the blue Hyundai Sonata and committed the shooting, according to Vanore.

At one point, Vanore alleges Jefferson told the other suspects: "I'm wearing this type of clothing, don't cook me."

Vanore and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said law enforcement still isn't done and they're looking into other shootings related to the one at Rising Sun and Cottman avenues, including the one in Ogontz that killed 17-year-old Imhotep Institute Charter High School student Dayemen Taylor.

Police also said they still don't have a motive for the shooting that injured eight Northeast High School students.

"We're not done," Vanore said. "We have a lot more evidence to go through. We're working with the DA's office to go through that evidence, so there are other incidents we believe are connected. We have other people that might be linked to these people, so we're working."

New charges for Northeast High School shooting suspect

During Thursday's press conference, Vanore said Buggs, one of the suspects in the shooting that injured eight Northeast High students, will be charged with homicide for a separate shooting on the 5800 block of Rising Sun Avenue in Philly's Crescentville section on Feb. 15.

The shooting at around 9 p.m. on Feb. 15 left 20-year-old Kristopher Dowling dead. He was shot multiple times in his upper body and pronounced that night at Temple University Hospital, police said.

Vanore said the evidence collected at that shooting scene and the Northeast High investigation will allow them to charge Buggs with homicide. He'll be charged on Friday.

Two of the eight Northeast High School students are still recovering in the hospital after the shooting, but they're in good condition, Bethel said.

Shooting in Ogontz, other related incidents

Besides the Ogontz shooting, police declined to specify what other shootings might be related but said they're investigating several other incidents.

Two days before the Northeast High School shooting, Taylor was fatally shot and four others, including two other Imhotep students, were wounded in a shooting at the 6200 block of Ogontz Avenue near a SEPTA bus stop.

Earlier this week, police released photos of two suspects wanted for the shooting.

Police said both of the suspects fired shots during the incident.

"Let the Imhotep community and Ogontz community understand we are working just as vigilantly and working hard to bring those individuals into custody," Bethel said

One suspect was wearing a black hoodie with the words "DON'T GET EMOTIONAL IT'S ONLY BROKEN PROMISES" on the back, according to police.

Another suspect was wearing a light-colored hoodie with dark-colored pants and a mask. Police said both suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting was one of four on or near a SEPTA bus stop that week in early March.

"As we've said, we believe some of these are connected," Vanore said. "There's some kind of two neighborhood groups that seems to be going back and forth. Some of the shootings were spread apart in the beginning. Those two were actually two days apart. We do believe they're connected, we don't have the exact motive for why those targets were picked, but we're looking at that and we're just getting started in this. We're not in any way done with this investigation. We're going to get to the bottom of Ogontz and maybe that will give us more answers. But we need to get enough to charge somebody in that case."

Boone to be extradited back to Philadelphia

Earlier this week, Boone, the fourth suspect in the Northeast High shooting case, was captured by U.S. Marshals in Alexandria, Virginia.

Boone is still in Virginia, but he's scheduled to be extradited to Philly on Friday, Vanore said.
