Praised: Sister Frances Dominica said bringing up her son was 'hard work'
An African orphan rescued by a nun and brought to Britain has been jailed for 20 months after stabbing a man with a machete.
Kojo Ritchie was ten months old when he was spotted by Sister Frances Dominica, the founder of the world’s first children’s hospice, as she toured a Ghanaian hospital in 1989.
Although doctors warned her that the baby – who weighed just 9lb – was likely to die of malnutrition, Sister Frances returned to the UK to become a single mother.
Now Ritchie, 20, has been jailed for attacking Courtenay Austin, whom he claimed made threats to him and his adoptive mother.
During his trial at Oxford Crown Court, Ritchie admitted assault and possessing a knife in a public place after stabbing Austin in the leg in Cowley, Oxford, in July.
Police who searched his nearby flat uncovered three swords, a machete and six other knives.
Defence lawyers for Ritchie, who has previous convictions for wounding and making threats, claimed he suffers issues resulting from his traumatic childhood.
In a previous interview, Sister Frances, who founded Helen House, the first children’s respite hospital, in Oxford in 1982, has spoken of seeing her adoptive son for the first time.
‘It was a year of terrible drought and everybody was hungry,’ she said. ‘I saw this tiny, frail baby.
‘The doctor said he would probably die soon and before I knew what I was doing I said, “Is there any way I could take care of him?”�’
Although she won widespread praise for the adoption, she received mixed reactions from fellow nuns, and stepped down as mother superior of Oxford’s All Saints Convent to care for him.
However, she admitted bringing up Ritchie alone had been ‘hard work’ but it had given her ‘an insight into how the rest of the world lives that you would never - obviously - get in a convent.’
Sister Frances, a Scottish-born trained nurse, was awarded an OBE in 2006 and won the title Woman of the Year a year later.
A spokesman for Helen House said last night that Sister Frances did not wish to comment.
