CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local man has admitted to killing a Madeira store owner, as well as committing a string of armed robberies.
Willie Attaway, 32, pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to murder in the 2021 death of 68-year-old Roop Gupta.

On Feb. 9, Attaway walked into Madeira Beverage and pointed a gun at the victim, who was working behing the counter.
The two got into a struggle, and Attaway shot him once in the abdomen. It was the first homicide in Madeira since 1984.
The parties involved in this case have recommended a sentence of up to 45 years in prison.

“Gun violence is never okay, and is especially tragic when a life is lost,” said U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker. “One shooting death is one too many, and my office remains committed to holding trigger pullers accountable.”

In the span of just two days, Attaway also robbed or tried to rob five different convenience stores:
  • Feb. 8 – Shell on S. Mason Montgomery Road in Deerfield Township,
  • Feb. 8 – Shell on Dixie Highway in Hamilton, Ohio,
  • Feb. 9 – Madeira Beverage on Kenwood Road in Madeira, Ohio,
  • Feb. 9 – Sunoco on Kenwood Road in Blue Ash, Ohio, and
  • Feb. 9 – Marathon on North Broadway in Lebanon, Ohio
He brandished a gun each time and demanded the clerks hand over money from the cash registers, which they did in four of the cases.
During the final robbery, the clerk reached under the counter, pretending he had a firearm. Attaway fled the scene. He was arrested Sep. 2, 2021.
“Today's guilty plea is a step in the right direction, and it will hopefully provide some small amount of closure for Mr. Gupta's family,” said John Nokes, acting special agent in charge for ATF’s Columbus Field Division. “Mr. Gupta's life ended tragically at the hands of the defendant. That heinous act altered the course of many lives, and it robbed Mr. Gupta, his family, and our community of future opportunities that so many of us take for granted.”
Lamond Johnson, 37, is also charged in Gupta's murder and the robberies. Authorities say they found a stolen gun in his car that was used in the shooting.

How nice. This animal gets fed by taxpayers for decades now. An exercise yard, a library, tv privileges to watch football games. Free healthcare. Mr. Gupta? He’s gone. No last meal, no goodbyes to loved ones. Why he isn’t being executed in a few days is why our country is so dangerous. He does not deserve ONE DAY of life amongst us.

Johnson was arrested on March 7, 2021. after reportedly assaulting an ATF officer. He was later indicted on 14 counts related to the crime spree.
