CHICAGO -- Chicago police are investigating a shooting that killed a 13-year-old boy while he was playing basketball.



13-Year-Old Trevonte Smith

Trevonte Smith was shot in the neck Friday night while playing basketball on city's South Side.

Police said the boy was not involved in gang activity and was not likely the target, NBC5 reported.

Authorities said the shots were fired from bushes loc

ated near the basketball court.

He was later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.

Smith's family said he
loved basketball and played on the Songhai Learning Institute basketball team.

A Chicago detective said the boy "was just a kid playing basketball."

Police said no arrests have been made in the incident.

What a shame! Another young negro male cut down before reaching his full potential. We will never know how many times he might have been posted on NNN!!

Personally, the only loss as I see it is the prison system.
