Woman Killed In Her Edgewater Apartment
Melissa Dorner
Roberto Ramirez
CHICAGO (CBS 2) Police issued an arrest warrant Thursday afternoon for the killer of 21-year-old Melissa Dorner. The search is now on for Roberto Ramirez, 24, who lived in the same building as Dorner at 6151 N. Winthrop Av. in the Edgewater neighborhood.
Ramirez is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Robert Cargie.
Neighbors have said they don't believe Dorner knew Ramirez,
except in passing.
Police say Ramirez has a criminal history. One of Ramirez's roomates, who said he did not know him well, fears that he is still on the loose.
[b
]The suspect has not been seen since the night of the murder. There was a possibility that Ramirez had fled to Mexico.[/b]
A police source told the paper that neighbors saw the man in the building over the weekend and he had been splattered in blood.
Just last year, Dorner was the victim of an attempted attack in Lincoln Park, and she moved to Edgewater seeking safety.
A memorial of flowers and photos is growing for the young woman, but that doesn't mean neighbors feel safe.
"I don't know what to do," resident Donald Smith said. "I'm thinking about moving."
Dorner was found dead Monday evening in her apartment at a high-rise building located at 6151 N. Winthrop in the Edgewater neighborhood.
A friend found her lying on the floor, unresponsive. She was
strangled to death and was also severely beaten in the head, according to the medical examiner's office.
The last time anybody heard from Dorner was Saturday night.
