NSW: Gang leader shot dead in third suspected 5T execution
EDS: CHANGES KEYWORD FROM DRIVEBY
By Lorna Knowles
SYDNEY, Feb 6 AAP - A founding member of the notorious 5T crime gang was shot dead as he
walked through the door of a western Sydney hotel last night.
The murder of Ro Van Le (Ro Van Le) outside the Cumberland Hotel in Bankstown was the third
suspected execution of a 5T gang member in four years.
Le, 29, was approached by a man of Asian appearance at the front door of the hotel and was
shot several times in the head and chest about 8.45pm, police s
aid today.
The Cambodian/Vietnamese father of one from Bankstown was rushed to Liverpool Hospital but
was dead on arrival, Bankstown Commander Superintendent David Madden told reporters.
Detective Inspector Stuart Wilkins of Crime Agencies said police were looking into possible
links to the murder of former 5T gang lord Tri Minh Tran and his lieutenant Thanh Hoa Nguyen
four years ago.
Tran, 20, and Nguyen, 19, were shot dead as they walked through the door of a McBurney Road
home unit in Cabramatta at 1am on August 7, 1995.
"That's certainly something we'll look into during our inquiries," Insp Wilkins said.
Supt Madden said Le had been drinking alone at the hotel for about an hour.
"He was walking from the premises when (he was approached), some form of confrontation has
taken place and during that episode a firearm has been produced," Supt Madden said.
The killer was described as 160cm tall, of slim build and wearing a coffee coloured sh
irt.
Supt Madden said it was too early to tell what type of firearm was used.
He said police had received conflicting evidence from witnesses about the direction the
offender fled and what type of car he was driving, although a blue Commodore had been
mentioned.
"There are conflicting stories as to what happened out the front of the hotel, there was
mention of a blue Commodore in early reports," Supt Madden said.
"We're comparing statements and trying to get more people to come forward who may have seen
anything".
Insp Wilkins said Le was one of the founding members of the 5T gang about nine years ago.
He confirmed Le had served a jail term but declined to say what for and when he was
released.
"We're putting together a profile of exactly what his activities might have been," he said.
"Being a founding member he was involved in its early establishment and ran with the gang
for a few years.
"Whether he was currently a memb
er or had left as a member is too early to determine and is
part of our investigation".
If was uncertain whether it was an organised hit or a spur of the moment confrontation
which led to shooting, he said.
Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Bankstown detectives on 9707
5299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
