Illegal Immigrant Arrested In Wreck On 45th Street

An illegal immigrant has been arrested in the case in which a vehicle plowed into a house at 2805 45th St. in East Lake Tuesday morning and injured a 91-year-old woman.

Facing numerous charges is is Vitalina Bautista Vargas.

She is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, driving without a license, no proof of insurance and reckless aggravated assault.

The victim, Louella Winton, remains hospitalized at Erlanger Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

She was reportedly in bed when the vehicle knocked her through the bedroom wall and threw her against the wall of the house next door. Chattanooga firefighters pulled her from the debris
, and handed her over to paramedics with Hamilton County EMS, which transported her to Erlanger Medical Center.

Ms. Winton received some cuts and bruises.

A 91-year-old woman who was asleep in her bed when a car crashed into her house on 45th Street has died.

Police said it was first thought that Louella Winton's injuries might not be life threatening, but she had some complications arise due to her injuries and overnight she died.

Charges against the driver will likely be upgraded once investigators have an opportunity to meet with the district attorney, police said.

Chattanooga police have made an arrest in the death of Louella Winton. The 91-year-old died yesterday just one week after a woman crashed her van through Winton's bedroom.

And in the past week, Chattanooga police have told the driver of the van, Vitalina Bautista Vargas, that she would need to turn herself in. Our Bill Markham spoke with Vargas just minutes before police came in to make the arrest.

A court date has been set for the woman who police say dr
ove her van through an elderly woman's home. Vitalina Bautista Vargas was arrested at her East Lake home yesterday.

She's charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, and not having a license or insurance. Bond was set at $275,000 and Vargas will make her first court appearance July 18th.

Update: Vargas Pleads Guilty

The woman charged in a fatal accident pleaded guilty to the crime and she could be deported (Wink Wink). Vitalina Bautista Vargas pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and got four years probation. She also got 11-months and 29 days of a suspended sentence for leaving the scene of an accident.

Vargas ran a van through the home of 91 year old Louella Winton. Winton was asleep in bed when the van crashed into her home, knocking her against the wall of the house next door. Winton later died at Erlanger Medical Center. If Va
rgas is deported (Wink Wink), she would not be allowed to come back to the United States for at least 10 years.

Guess she'll have to stay in the US while she "serves" her fours probation heh? That's cruel and unusual punishment for sure.​
