KAMPALA - The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Justice Mike Chibita, has discontinued murder proceedings against 11 men and a female indicted with the murder of over nine women in Nansana municipality.

On Friday, state attorney Joan Keko informed court that although the matter was for further mention, the DPP had instructed her to discontinue proceedings against 12 of the 13 people indicted with the murder of women in Nansana.

“The matter is coming up for further mention. However, I have instructions from the DPP in a letter dated January 11, 2018 to discontinue charges against 12 accused under article 120 of the Constitution,” Keko said.

This prompted Nabweru Court Chief Magistrate Rebecca Esther Nasambu to discharge the 12.

Those discharged are Robert Mugerwa, Isma Tamale, Steven Ssendijja, Mahad Kakumba, Sam Mayambala, Philip Tumuhimbise, David Wasswa, George Ssempa, Bosco Waligo, Ismael Ssegawa and Tina Prosper Nantongo
.

It was a moment of joy and emotions after the chief magistrate accepted to discharge them basing on the DPP’s letter.

They were seen hugging each other and later joined by their relatives to jubilate.

However, their co-accused Ibahim Kaweesa was sent to the High Court to face trial.

On terrorism, prosecution alleges that Kaweesa for purposes of intimidating the public for social, political or economic reasons, directly involved himself in the acts of terrorism by murdering a number of women in Nansana.

It is further alleged that Kaweesa robbed the deceased of their property, including a mattress, mobile phones, blankets and pair of bed sheets.
