Just one day before Colquitt County was to compete in the National Select 7 on 7 Championships in Hoover, Ala., and five weeks before the start of the 2015 season , Colquitt County running back TyKerrius “Grump” Jones was arrested and charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery in the July 5 shooting death of John Hester.

Jones, who averaged more than 10 yards a carry and scored nine touchdowns as the Packers won the Class AAAAAA state championship last year, was one of seven teens charged in the shooting of Hester, 68, who was found in his yard on Highway 256 in Norman Park.

Two of others charged — I-Key Pinkins, 18, and Brandon Wynn, 18 — also were members of the state championship team as seniors last season.

Also arrested were Adrian Robinson, 19; Derrick Phillips, 18; Christian Glover, 18; and Ty’Cameron Hayes, 18.

Jones, 17, a rising junior, was the heir apparent to Class AAAAAA Offensive Player of the Year Sihiem King, who graduated and has gone to the University of Kentucky to play football.

“This is a very tragic, very sobering situation,” Colquitt County coach Rush Propst said Thursday evening from Birmingham, Ala., where he had an appointment with his oncologist.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Hester family and everyone affected by this crime.”

Propst said Jones has been indefinitely suspended from all football activities.

“We are going to let the authorities do their work and let the investigation take its course,” Propst said. “But he is no longer part of the team.”
