Two apartment maintenance superintendents were charged Tuesday for their alleged role in a scheme to defraud apartment complexes where they work, Ridgeland police said.

Demond Glover, 25, and Tommy Lee "Tony" Jones, 34, both of Canton, were picked up at their place of employment, Ridgeland police said. Each man faces one count of false pretense for filing false invoices for goods knowingly not received. Each posted a $10,000 bond.

Conviction on one count of false pretense could result in up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, said Carol Boland, an investigator with the office of Mad
ison-Rankin District Attorney David Clark.

Their arrests are linked t
o that of Ridgeland appliance wholesaler Gilbert Sollek. Sollek was arrested Feb. 10 on two counts of attempted false pretense and two counts of conspiracy to commit false pretense.

Glover and Jones allegedly were among apartment maintenance superintendents receiving kickbacks from Sollek for filing false invoices for appliances never installed at their respective apartment complexes, Clark said. The scheme allegedly netted Sollek "tens of thousands" of dollars, Clark has said.

Glover was arrested at The Point and Jones was arrested at The Trace. Both men could face additional related charges, Clark said.

Sollek was arrested following a sting operation involving an area apartment supervisor who agreed to work undercover with the Ridgeland Police Department and the district attorney's office.

"This was a creative undercover operation to stop stealing in Madison County," Cl
ark said.

The scheme reportedly goes back 10 years, according to a ledger obtained in a search warrant of Solleks business, Camsco Wholesalers Inc., U.S. 51.

Using that ledger, Clark said his office identified questionable transactions at five complexes in the tri-county area. More properties could be identified and more arrests made, he said.

In addition to The Point and The Trace, the complexes are Crosswinds Apartment Community in Pearl and Sherwood Forest Apartments and Park Towne Apartments, both in Jackson.

Sollek, a former Ridgeland alderman and a former reserve deputy for the Madison County Sheriff's Department, remains free on $40,000 bond.

His case was sent to a Madison County grand jury.
