A teenager who attacked five females in Lower Hutt has been jailed.

The two youngest victims were sexually assaulted and the three adults fought off Jesse Keepa Campbell.

In Wellington District Court today Judge John Walker said it was open to view Campbell's primary intention as theft and the indecent assaults were opportunistic when the targets were girls of about his own age.

Four of the five had iPods or cellphones in view.

Campbell, now 18, was 16 when the attacks took place between April and September 2011.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of assault with a weapon and a jury found him guilty of three charges of attempted kidnapping, one assault with a weapon, two indecent assaults, two kidnappings, one threatening to kill, a theft, and one assault with intent to rob.

Judge Walker said the victims - aged 14 to 30 - were grabbed from behind when they were walking or running in daylight on paths around Lower Hutt.

The Crown said the victims had a similar appearance, slightly built and a similar height.

Campbell was disguised with a hood, scarf or clothing over his lower face and in one case carried a pair of scissors and in two others showed a knife. One girl's lip was nicked with a knife when she struggled with him.

The victims were traumatised and said that afterwards they had flashbacks and nightmares. The younger ones' schooling had been affected. One developed a fear of open spaces and had moved house.

Because of Campbell's age at the time of the offending jail terms were only able to be imposed on the charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to rob. On all the other charges he was convicted and discharged.

Judge Walker said Campbell had been diagnosed as having a conduct disorder that could be treated with intensive counselling. He asked Corrections authorities to make ''every effort'' to see Campbell received treatment during his sentence. The judge said he would check on what was being done for Campbell.

He hoped those managing the sentence would ''rise to the challenge''.

Campbell's youth was an important factor in lessening the jail term that might otherwise be imposed, the judge said.

As a child Campbell had drifted from one family member to another, associated with Mongrel Mob members and used alcohol and cannabis. Campbell admitted that in the past he had bullied children at school for their money, bags and phones.

This had to be a Maorie scum doing the robbery. Sadly, he bullied defenseless kids, robbing them at will, using his brown skin as an excuse. As such, I think he'd make a good kwap, fed or National guardsman. He's just the thing they're looking for these days. Nigger.
