Teens arrested in hate crime attack

URBANA -- Police arrested a pair of Rockford teens they believe were involved in a hate crime attack Sunday morning.

Keith L. Jones, 17, and a 15-year-old juvenile were taken into custody along with a 26-year-old Champaign man shortly after they allegedly attacked a 41-year-old woman inside a public restroom in the 1600 block of Cunningham Avenue.

According to police reports, the three shouted racial slurs at the woman, who is black, and one of the three punched her. The three then fled in a car driven by a fourth man and were arrested a short time later.

Jones, the 15-year-old and the Champaign man, David S. Johnson, each face
harges of mob action, hate crime and disorderly conduct. The driver of the vehicle, who police reports said was not involved in the attack, faces a charge of driving on a suspended license.
