Trespassing call leads to arrest for drugs and guns

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY.com) -- Police in Newport News ended up arresting a man on multiple charges after responding to a simple trespassing call nearby.

According to police, at around 5:30 p.m., officers were called out to 14300 block of Courthouse Way for a report of trespassing. After checking it out, they were leaving the complex when an officer noticed a man acting suspiciously. He was on a porch looking at the officers go past, apparantly hiding behind overgrown shrubbery. The officers parked up the street and walked back to the residence.

The door was open and the officers observed the subject standing in the hallway. The subject made a st
atement to someone else in the residence that someone was at the front door. At that point the officers observed a second male in a back bedroom with the door open. The first subject came out the front door and out on the porch. When they opened the screened door, the officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the residence.

The officers entered the residence and walked toward the bedroom with the second subject.They observed a couple of baggies of marijuana.The smell was strong in the bedroom. The officers asked the subject to stand, as he stood up, a handgun was located as well as digital scale where he was sitting.

The officers located the landlord. They obtained a search warrant for the rooms.The search warrants were executed. They found two handguns, one .38 caliber and one .32 caliber. Also 673 grams (app. 1 pound) of marijuana, and some other items to prepare marijuana for sale. They also discovered $800 in cash as well as cellular phones.

Investigation determined that t
he .38 caliber pistol was stolen from Gloucester.

All of this took place within a 1000 feet of the Denbigh Early Childhood Center.

Charged is 21-year-old Tyree Hasan Darrisaw of the 14300 blk of Old Courthouse Way. He's charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana within 1000 feet of a school.
