3 men face murder charges in Northeast Heights attack

Three men were charged this morning with murder and two women have been jailed in the shootings of Albuquerque real estate developer R.J. Schaefer and his wife, Olga.

Schaefer, 67, died and his wife was critically injured in the shootings
Thursday morning at their home at 7712 American Heritage Drive N.E. Olga Schaefer, 52, was in stable condition this morning at University of New Mexico Hospital.

According to a Metro Court criminal complaint, Bryan Sandoval, 20, and Edward Esquer, 35, arrived at the Schaefer home early Thursday morning, on a tip from 41-year-old Jeff Fietek, who may have worked fo

r the Schaefers in the past.

While Esquer and San
doval's accounts place them both at the home that morning, they differ on who shot the couple, according to the complaint. Each implicated the other after being questioned by detectives.

The criminal complaints detail the following events:

Esquer said he was approached by Sandoval for a ride to "collect some money he was owed."

The two drove to the Schaefer home in Esquer's gold Chevy Impala. Esquer told detectives that Sandoval entered the home, while he waited in the vehicle.

Soon after, Sandoval called Esquer on his cell phone and told him there "was a problem."

Esquer said he entered the house, saw the bodies and fled with Sandoval following in the Schaefers' white Cadillac Escalade.

They left the house with a bag containing checks, a purse and credit cards.

However, the complaint states that Sandoval told detectives a different s

Sandoval said Esquer for a ride to the Schaefers' home, where Sandoval said Fietek once worked.

Sandoval said Esquer gave him a walkie-talkie and told him to stay outside, the complaint said.

According to Sandoval, shortly after Esquer entered the house, he heard four gunshots, and Esquer called him in.

Meanwhile, a secretary who worked for R.J. Schaefer's home-based real estate company, arrived at the home at about 6:45 a.m. and saw a suspicious man outside. Instead of going inside, she decided to drive around the block, she told police.

While driving, she attempted to call the Schaefers, with no answer. When she returned, she saw the Escalade pull out of the driveway and speed away.

The woman then entered the home to discover R.J. Schaefer shot in the head and Olga Schaefer shot in the chest in the bedroo

, said police spokeswoman Trish Hoffman.

The Escalade was discovere
d by police abandoned a few miles away on Chambers Court Northeast.

Several of the suspects told detectives Sandoval and Esquer met at the home of Fietek and Penny Rasmussen, 22, in the 11000 block of Namb? Avenue Northeast.

According to the complaint, Rasmussen was sent around 9:40 a.m. to cash a check from Schaefer's account, filled out for $2,000 by Fietek.

Fietek stated that while writing out the check, several of them took "frequent breaks to smoke methamphetamine" in Esquer's room, the complaint said.

At the bank, tellers got suspicious. Rasmussen fled, leaving her ID behind.

Police said it was the lead that helped crack the case.

Using the surveillance camera and her ID, detectives traced Rasmussen's address and set up surveillance at the residence.

P
olice also d
iscovered se
veral other transactions on Schaefer's credit cards, including a cell phone purchase at Cricket and a surveillance system bought at Wal-Mart.

At about 5 p.m. Thursday, police saw Ra
smussen leave the house and took her into custody.

Later that day, Esquer left the home and was taken into custody by police.

Esquer told police they could find Sandoval at a Best Western on Central Avenue Northeast.

Sandoval and his girlfriend, Bene Vigil, a minor, were taken into custody, according to the complaint.

Fietek was taken into custody from the home on Namb? Avenue.

The three men have been charged with an open count of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, forgery, possession of stolen property, conspiracy and tampering with evidence.

Bonds were set at $7 million for Sandoval, $5 million for Esquer and $2.5 million for Fietek.

Rasmussen and Vigil were charged with harboring a felon, forgery, recei
ving stolen prop
erty and possess
ion of a controlled substance, police said.

Druggies + spics = dead rich White people. What a crying shame. These killers deserve the death penalty, but New Mexico has only
executed one criminal in the past 40 years. I'd be glad to volunteer.
