1st ID soldier faces rape, attempted murder charges

A 1st Infantry Division soldier is being held in a military jail after being arrested by the German police on charges of rape and attempted murder.
The soldier, whose name has not been released, was arrested Thursday in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred last weekend near a nightclub in Hirschaid, Germany, according to 1st Infantry Division news release.
Hirschaid is about 10 miles south of Bamberg.
On Monday, a 20-year-old woman was found unconscious near a commuter parking lot, according to a German police news release, which was translated into English and provided to Stars and Stripes by the 1st ID public affairs office.
The woman, who was still unconscious as of Friday afternoon, had heavy head and upper body injuries, the release

The Bamberg police, wo
rking with the Army's Criminal Investigative Command, established a special investigation team to look into the alleged crime. Following an initial evaluation of the evidence, police questioned several U.S. Americans who are stationed in the Schweinfurt area, the released stated.
After the questioning, police arrested a 22-year-old man on charges of attempted murder, rape and aggravated assault, according to the release. The soldier is being held at the Mannheim Confinement Facility, according to 1st ID officials.
German police officials are still investigating the case and are looking for anyone who may have seen the woman and the soldier together last weekend at the nightclub.
