Shooting Outside High School

January 5, 2005 --A teenager was shot in the head outside a North Philadelphia high school.

Neither the victim nor the suspected shooter are believed to be Dobbins students but a school district official acknowledges the students were in harm's way.

Michelle Giles/DOBBINS SOPHOMORE:

"Everything seemed cool. It was like a regular school day, that's when somebody came up. I don't know from which direction and started shooting and everybody started scattering."

There was a volley of shots outside Dobbins High School right about the time school had let out. When the gunfire was over, a 18-year-old man was in the street bleeding from his head while students
scurried to safety at the school gymnasium.

Even with a heavy police presence,
many were hesitant to venture out and walk on their way home.

Brittany Gregory/DOBBINS SOPHOMOOLIE:

"I'm trying to catch a bus so I don't have to walk down the street."
School district officials say while they are pleased that with the response of security personnel to keep other children from injury, there is no comfort in knowing this latest gunshot victim was not enrolled here.

Vincent Thompson/PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL DISTRICT:

"We take violence against anyone seriously and we are asking anyone with information, somebody's gotta know it happened at 22nd and Lehigh which is one of the busiest intersections in the city. Please contact Philadelphia police."
Thompson says the gunshot victim is a dropout from the district. Students have reported hearing at least five shots. At this time we have no word of any arrests.

Armed Police in City Schools?
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Jan. 7, 2005 --The debate over placing armed police officers at or near Philadelphia schools may intensify after another fatal shooting.

Officials say 18-year-old James Boone (I love that name!) died yesterday, a day after he was shot outside Murrell Dobbins Vo-Tech High School, the latest victim in a year of school and youth violence in the city.

Mayor John Street and schools chief Paul Vallas have sparred this year over the issue of putting armed city officers at or inside schools; Vallas favors the move while Street is against it.

Teenage School Shooting Victim Dies
January 6, 2005 --Officials say a teenager shot outside a North Philadelphia high school has died today.

The death comes after 18-year-old James Boone was shot in the head yesterday afternoon outside Murrell Dobbins Vo-Tech High School.

Mayor John Street says police are trying to learn why a patrol car normally stationed at the school at dismissal time had left a few minutes earlier. Street says the officers may have left to respond to a medical call.

Boone had dropped out of another North Philadelphia high school.

His death is the latest in a series of shootings at or near Philadelphia public schools or involving public school students.

Neither teen was a student at the school. (Damn, they create school problems even when they don't attend school.
)

The victim had recently dropped out, and police said the alleged shoote
