FREMONT — She's done it again, authorities say.

A female bank robber wearing large sunglasses and armed with a gun robbed another bank Friday morning, the second in Fremont this week and the fourth in the area this month.

The shegro — who is being sought in five crimes this month, including an attempted robbery in Hayward — went to the Chase bank at Capitol and Walnut avenues about 9:20 a.m. and took an undisclosed amount of cash, Detective Bill Veteran said.

Police said she fled in a white or gray Jeep Cherokee, the same type of vehicle that was used in the first Fremont bank robbery April 2, he said.

Witnesses said the robber in Friday's case stood about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and had shoulder-length weave. She wore gloves, a black jacket and jeans, Veteran said. In the past cases, the robber has been described as a black woman about 30 to 40 years old, standing 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-5.

In some cases the
robber has been described as wearing a wig, but in each incident the woman has worn oversized sunglasses.

Police believe the woman is responsible for three robberies in Fremont, one in Newark and one in Hayward. "(A robber) can only be so prolific before they get caught," Veteran said.

Authorities also are investigating a report she was casing another bank on Tuesday, less than an hour before she robbed an HSBC Bank branch at Fremont Boulevard and Walnut Avenue. Anyone with information may call police .

I see that some banks are beginning to post notices stating that for security, clients or customers are "requested" not to wear baseball caps, hoodies or sunglasses inside the business. This measure alone should be a kind of deterrent to boon bank boosters--or at least to make their apprehension and conviction easier.

This precaution should be adopted everywhere!

UNION CITY — A female bank robber struck again Friday afternoon and is now being sought in connection with six such crimes in the East Bay over the past month.

The woman, this time clad in a purple scarf and large sunglasses, robbed a Citibank branch on Decoto Road in Union City at about 2:15 p.m., police Sgt. Jared Rinetti said.

"It looks like the same (suspect)," he said, referring to the woman who is being sought by local and federal authorities in connection with the series of heists or attempted crimes that began April 1 in Hayward.

Few details were released about Friday's case because officers were still at the scene investigating, but the crime was sim
ilar to those committed in Fremont, Newark and Hayward, police said.

The robber in previous cases has been described as a black woman in her 30s or 40s who stands about 5 feet, 3 inches tall.

In each case, she has worn large sunglasses and carried a large purse that she has used to conceal a pistol, authorities said.

In two cases, witnesses reported she wore a wig; in two others, witnesses said she wore a hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over her head.

There also have been two getaway vehicles involved in the crimes — a white Jeep Cherokee and a white or silver Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Police on Friday did not immediately know what type of getaway vehicle was used in the Union City case.

The string of crimes started on April 1 in

Hayward where the woman tried to rob a Chase branch on Southland Drive. When the woman began making demands, the teller ducked behind a desk, prompting the robber to flee.

A day later, a woman held up a Bank of Amer
ica branch near Fremont Boulevard and Beacon Avenue.

That was followed by robberies of a Bank of America branch near Thornton Avenue and Newark Boulevard in Newark on April 8; an HSBC Bank branch on Fremont Boulevard and Walnut Avenue in Fremont on April 21; and a Chase branch near Capitol and Walnut avenues in Fremont on April 24.

FREMONT — A 45-year-old Hayward woman is set to be arraigned Monday on robbery charges after police said she admitted committing a slew of crimes in the East Bay during the last two months because of "tough times."

Daphne Elizabeth Cole
was being held Friday at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in connection with six robberies and one attempted robbery at banks in Fremont, Hayward, Union City and Newark that began April 1.

She
was booked into the jail early Friday morning, a day after being arrested while leaving a doctor's appointment at Kaiser Hospital in Hayward, Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran said.

Authorities said the woman admitted to committing the crimes because of "tough times," but they would not further explain the motive.

Cole is listed in county booking records as unemployed. Her MySpace page, which has remained unchanged for more than five months, indicates that she is married and has three adult children, two sons and a daughter.

Residents at the Whitman Green Apartments in South Hayward, where Cole lived, said Cole is outgoing and friendly. They were shocked Friday to hear of her arrest.

Police said they believe Cole is responsible for six bank robberies and one attempted robbery from April 1 to May 21.

Four of the robberies took place in Fremont, and one each in Newark, Union City and Hayward. The attempted robbery happened at a Chase branch in Southland Mal
l in Hayward.

Investigators also have linked Cole to five banks — from Fremont to Castro Valley — where employees said the woman came into the bank, looked around and then abruptly left when she noticed employees looking at her, Veteran said.

For nearly two months, authorities had been seeking a black woman described as being 30 to 40 years old.

In each case, the robber wore some sort of disguise often composed of large sunglasses and some kind of head covering — a wig, handkerchief or hood from a sweatshirt.

"She obviously goes to great length to cover her hair,"
Veteran said earlier this week.

In each case, the robber also presented a handgun while demanding money. Police on Friday said they had not recovered any weapons.

Investigators credit Hayward Police Officer Jessica Perryman with cracking the case. The six-year veteran spotted Cole's white Jeep Cherokee in Hayward at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday as she was conducting an unrelated traffic stop, p
olice Capt. Darryl McAllister said.

The officer thought the vehicle and driver resembled the suspect and vehicle seen fleeing the bank robberies, police said.

The most recent crime was reported May 21 in Hayward.

"Catching the bad guy is sometimes a product of an officer being at the right place at the right time," McAllister said. "In some of the more difficult or hard-to-find cases, it takes tenacity, ingenuity and good old-fashioned police work to get a step ahead of a criminal who eludes capture over time. Jess Perryman is definitely a tenacious officer whose instinct and great work netted the bad guy — or in this case, the bad gal — police officers all over the East Bay had been looking for."

Investigators traced the Cherokee back to Cole, and then arrested her Thursday afternoon.

Police on Friday said they had seized a 1993 white Jeep Cherokee and a 2004 silver PT Cruiser that are registered to Cole.

Witnesses in the bank robberies noted that the assailan
t fled in similar-type vehicles.

Hayward Woman Arrested For Serial Bank Robberies; Blames "Tough Times"

Posted: 3:10 pm PDT May 29, 2009

FREMONT, Calif. --[/b] A 45-year-old Hayward woman has been arrested in connection with a string of bank robberies in southern Alameda County over the last two months, Fremont police spokesman Detective Bill Veteran said Friday.

Daphne Elizabeth Cole was arrested without incident at about 2 p.m. Thursday as she left a doctor's appointment in Hayward.

Cole is scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Veteran said investigators credit Hayward police patrol Officer Jessica Perryman for developing the information that led to the identification and subsequent arrest of Cole.

He said that while Pe
rryman was at an unrelated traffic stop, she saw Cole drive by, copied her license plate and through follow-up with Hayward detectives was able to identify Cole as the suspect.

According to Veteran, Cole is believed to have committed seven bank robberies since April 1: three in Fremont, two in Hayward and one each in Union City and Newark.

Veteran said Cole admitted to the robberies and cited personal "tough times" as the motive.

He said police aren't releasing a photograph of Cole because they still have to conduct a number of photo line-ups in the case.
