A Gainesville man has been arrested in connection with an attempted sexual assault of a University of Florida student Tuesday morning.

Gainesville Police said John-Phillip Rogers, 24, was identified as a possible suspect during a canvass of the Townhouse Apartment complex at 1740 NW Third Place, where the assault took place.

Rogers lives in the complex and matched the initial description and was very nervous, according to GPD spokesman Officer Ben Tobias. He was later positively identified by the victim in a photo lineup.

At about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the 21-year-old UF student was walking down a staircase at the apartment house when she encountered a man who began talking to her.

As the woman walked away, the man followed her then grabbed her by the arm and forced her across a parking lot and to the ground behind a parked car, police said.

The man got on top of the woman, put his hand over her mouth as she shouted and told her he would shoot her if she didn't stop screaming. The woman said she did not see a weapon.

The man groped the woman but ran off when a motorist passed by.

After police developed a composite sketch of the suspect, he was placed in a photo lineup and identified by the victim.
