A Phoenix pawnshop clerk was shot to death Wednesday night in an apparent robbery of the store, police said.

The unidentified clerk was found by three customers behind the counter of the Master Pawn store at 35th Street and Thomas Road about 6 p.m., Phoenix police Sgt. Clark Simmons said.

The customers, who were planning to sell some jewelry, did not see any suspects and quickly called police, Simmons said. Police had made no arrests Wednesday night and did not identify any suspects.

Investigators said they saw smashed display cases that contained guns and jewelry. Some items appeared to be missing, Simmo
s said.

It had not been determined late Wednesday if the store had security cameras, and police did not know if the clerk had been armed or if he was working alone.
