CARMICHAEL, Calif. -- Sacramento County authorities are investigating the possibility that the same man may be responsible for two recent attacks in the Carmichael area.

The first attack happened in October. The victim was a 9-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted near Hackberry Lane after a man asked her for help finding a lost kitten. The man then forced the girl into a nearby creek area.

A second attack happened Nov. 20 near the intersection of Stanley Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard. A 54-year-old woman was delivering newspapers at 3:30 a.m. when she was attacked.

"He approached her from behind, he hit her over the head with a

n unknown object. He forced her to the ground and attempted to sexually assault her," Sacramento County Sheriff
's Department spokesman R.L. Davis said.

Investigators said the woman was able to activate her car alarm and scare away the attacker.

A sketch of the attacker was created based on a description given by the woman. The sketch is similar to the one created from the description given by the girl in the earlier attack.

"The two sketches near each other ... they look very similar. We can't say that they are linked together, but what we are asking for is if anybody sees anything familiar about the individual in the sketch to please contact the sheriff's department," Davis said.

Carmichael residents have canvassed their neighborhoods with fliers hoping somebody will spot who they believe is a serial attacker.

"Our doors are always locked now. We try not to go out at night," resident Brian Carr said.

Meanwhile, the victim in t
he N
ovember attack has returned to her paper route.
