Former State Rep. Pistol-Whipped In Apparent Robbery
Willie Logan Says Man Forced Him To Stop Car

MIAMI -- Former state Rep. Willie Logan is out of the hospital after a mugging overnight.

Logan told police he was driving in the area of Northwest 53rd Avenue and 189th Street at about 3 a.m. when two men forced him to stop and pistol-whipped him.

(Willie was probably trying to buy drugs)

Willie took refuge in his boyhood home, and refused an interview with NBC 6.

"He was flagged down by two black males. At the time of the stop, the subject produced a firearm and pisto
l-whipped Mr. Logan," said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, of the Miami-Dade police.

Logan, a former mayor of Opa-Locka, former state representative and former candidate for U.S. Senate, was air lifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital and released Tuesday morning.

However, reports indicate that police were also working a crime scene at Logan's home, where there was blood on the driveway and a broken window, NBC 6's Hank Tester reported.

In 2001, Logan was accused of lewd and lascivious behavior after being confronted by police in a Haulover Beach restroom. The charges were later dropped, but Logan was tried for resisting arrest. A jury found him not guilty.

Logan took refuge in his boyhood home, and refused an interview with NBC 6.
Relatives delivered clothes and documents, as Logan did not appear ready to return to his home, Tester
reported.

The investigation continues.

Authorities say Willie Logan was driving to a convenience store at about 3:20 this morning when two men flagged him down. After Logan stopped, police say the men struck him repeatedly with their handguns and stole items that police won't identify. No arrests have been made.

Logan began his political career as mayor of Opa-locka at age 23. He served in the state House for 18 years and became Democratic leader. He was in line to become speaker if his party held its majority, but he was replaced in 1998 by a white legislator.

In March 2001, he was arrested after police found him mast
urbating and in possession of a marijuana cigarette during a nighttime sweep of bathrooms at a l
ocal park. Charges were later dismissed.
